This is ridiculous. Why in the world would they arrest a man for taking a picture? If it’s such a high risk, it shouldn’t be in public sight to begin with. Oh, it’s fine for him to LOOK at it, but to take a picture? God forbid.

I wonder what law(s), exactly, the arresting officer thought was being broken. I know people who have been arrested generally spin the story to make them seem like the victims instead of the perpetrators, but regardless of who said what, no documentation that I’m aware of exists of Becker creating a nuisance, or actually committing a crime. If there had actually been a sign on the property which said “No photographs”, or if the ATM machine had a similar sign posted on it, that would be another issue altogether. Police officers are also known as law “enforcement” officers, not “law makers”. Any competent officer knows when to back away from a confrontation when they have no legal standing.

This is/will become more prevalent as the ‘bunker mentality’ kicks up a notch. Recently AMTRAK had a phot contest and AMTRAK police stopped a photographer for taking pix of a train. DOH!

If REI’s really banning the picture taker for a year, they deserve some suckage as well. If anything, they owe him an apology. Gotta love law enforcement professionals who don’t know the law!
