A weird iPhone Apps site has some prognostications on the new iPhone. The worst thing? They appear to be patently false. Here are their “major” revelations:

# Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
# OLED screen
# 1.5X The battery life
# Apple logo on the back to light up
# Rubber-tread backing
# Built-in FM transmitter
# July 17th, 2009 release date

The rest of their predictions, after the jump, are things we already know.

* 32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
* $199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
* 3.2 Megapixel camera
* Video recording & editing capabilities
* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
* OLED screen
* 1.5X The battery life
* Double the RAM and processing power
* Built-in FM transmitter
* Apple logo on the back to light up
* Rubber-tread backing
* Sleeker design
* Built-in compass
* Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.
* Turn by turn directions
* July 17th, 2009 release date

My take is that they won’t do much to the look and feel and they definitely won’t make the Apple light up. FM transmitter? Nah. That’s old tech. And OLED is too expensive and someone somewhere would have run bells if Apple bought a million OLEDs.

  • I think you should add turn by turn directions to the “not going to happen” list. At least not in Google Maps. I think they would rather have Garmin come in and make 30% of everything they sell than give it away for free. OLED would be pointless and I doubt very cost effective. Rubber treading would be nice but that isn’t “Apple”.

    I would love the built in FM tuner but they don’t have the space for that and it would be hell if you were in an EDGE area. I can only imagine the alien noises that would make. It almost makes me cringe.

  • I feel the only thing I will look forward to is the camcorder function. Definatley something they are missing! I think of should have been on this generation iPhone!

  • FM Transmitter won’t fly. Apple is following a “one size fits all” approach and FM Transmitters are illegal in many countries the iPhone is sold in (without a broadcaster’s license in some – like England – or period, in others) and must be crippled in others (like the US). It’s better served by third party add-ons, specific to each country they are sold in.

  • I just hope it comes out by July 29th!
    *Birthday*

  • But what about Cut and Paste, IMO this pretty much cripples the iphone in many ways, it was the feature that made the original Mac what it was and I could be wrong but it doesn’t seem that it should be all that hard to impliment?

  • There is no chance Apple will ever implement a built in FM Transmitter. Like JSK said it is illegal in some countries and Apple is targeting to more than just the US obviously.
