I thought of concepts like this before as well, but the idea always seems to be undermined with there being a potential of vandalism and the cost this unit.

That's why we need to encourage more people of all types (not just people who can't afford a car) to get on a bus, and convince them it's not as bad as they think.

If the EyeStop should be placed anywhere, it needs to be promoted in an area with a lot of pedestrian traffic (increases the likelihood of vandals not vandalizing it) and among more affluent places (like suburban area business centers, or nice urban neighborhoods). This definitely should not be plopped into a poor neighborhood.

haha, totally agree with the "it would get vandalized and destroyed" comments. I had a little fun in photoshop creating the real bus stop of the future: http://twitpic.com/5k3l5

In NYC, it would be destroyed in a New York second.
Well, in certain neighborhoods anyway.

Nice to have the Bus Stop of the Future - but wouldn't it be better to know when the bus is arriving at your stop BEFORE you arrive at the stop. MIT already has this - NextBus. Check out their website:
http://www.nextbus.com/predictor/prediction.shtml?a=mit&r=saferidecambwest&d=frcamp&s=newho&ts=tangwest
With NextBus, MIT students can find out when the next bus is arriving at their stop on their cell phone using the mobile web, using sms text messaging or by dialing a local phone number. NextBus empowers riders to manage their time. NextBus is also in use in San Francisco - and soon - as I understand it - in DC, Toronto and a host of other cities.
