The recently announce Pentax K-7 is shaping up nicely. The 14.6-megapixel shooter has an impressive spec list that includes 720p HD video recording, an HDR mode, and a solid body, but the high price of $1,299 took some by surprise. That price is notably more than the new Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i that feature similar specs. An early review by DemsystifyingDigital though gave the camera very high marks despite taking impressions from a pre-production model.
We won’t steall all of their thunder but they found the large camera to be solid. The button placement has improved from previous models and there are more of ‘em. The shutter and autofocus is fast too. Overall, they walked away with the impression that the camera is meant more for the prosumer or photographer looking to make a step up into a more feature-filled camera.

What’s with all these gadget sites bringing up the Rebel T1i and the D5000 every time they talk about the K-7? The only similar spec I see on them is that they all three shoot video. The K-7 is in a different league as far as build quality and advanced features. The Canon 50D, Nikon D300, Sony A700, and Olympus E30 are the competitors to the K-7.
I agree, the level of this camera is much higher than the T1i and the D5000. The problem with the gadget sites is that they are made by “techies” not by people who actually cares about photography. The K-7 has a faster shooter, magnesium alloy body, 11 point focus, 77sectors light metering and better sensor. Of course it’s rivals are The D300, 50D and A700, wich are all chunkier, heavier and more expensive, not to mention how much doies it cost to have a full line of high grade lenses. By the way, none of those are able to autofocus while recording video… Overall, I think that at least on specs, this pentax is a reason good enough to upgrade (I didn’t upgrade my K10 to K20) and it covers (within the limits of reality and target market and price) most of the things that we -the real users- wanted from our previous cameras
Same here. Really tiring, it is like saying that the price of a Ferrari is notably more that that of a Honda or Datsun that feature similar specs (fuel type, number of wheels, front window)
Hold a T1i and you know they’re very, very different beasts.
Anyway, that’s my view..
B’sides; which other make has weather sealing, weather sealed kit lenses, autofocus during video, a dedicated mic port etc? Hah!
Dear editor, you commited equivalent of comparing Audi Quattro against Ford Ka and complaining that the former one is, surprisingly, more expensive.
“That price is notably more “… of course it is …
“than the new Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i that feature similar specs” … err, excuse me, do they have magnesium body and weather sealing? What about 100% coverage pentaprism? Or perhaps shutter 1/8000? Or built in shake reduction? Or second wheel to quickly adjust settings? Or even damn top LCD? None? I thought so.
The only things in common : new DSLR models, all take pictures, all make movies.
To find similar features, look at more expensive offer of competing vendors, like D300 or D50.
Are you fan of canon or nikon?, you are impartial and pathetic comparsion. Bronek he said the thru. Please dont make bad comparsions to favor to this camera marks. No confuse people for to gain sales. Canon and Nikon no need more marketing people buy like coca-cola.

The Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i do not have similar specs. There are many things on the laundry list of specs for the K-7 that far surpass the Nikon and Canon the author listed: one being superior weather sealing. Not to mention the internal shake reduction and automatic in-camera HDR bracketing on the K-7 that NO ONE else has!
