If you have ever wanted to plug in a pro-quality microphone and headphone to an iPhone or iPod touch, pay attention and read on.
This guide will show you how to make a cable that will allow you to do just that. It’s not that hard as long as you can solder well, and can locate the right stuff. But in the end, you’ll end up making a little dongle that will allow you to plug in a mic and headphones separately.

“as long as you can solder well”…
Well, that eliminates 60% of the people in the world.
60%? What solder-happy town are you living in? try 99.9%.

How much did it cost to make this cable, was it under $30?
This coment is to TOM TOM, the reason for this guy making this cable is to we can have a PRO QUALITY microphone hook up. If you just want to make a lousy phone call on your Ipod touch then yes that link you posted to the other microphone would be fine. but good luck recording real stereo audio or live music with a tiny mic. The only thing the Iphone has never been used for is professional sound, and the only limitation seems to be what kind of mic is on the Iphone.
This is a great DIY post, I will make one.;
