Is there any way to load Android onto a cell phone which it wasn't designed for? And if not, why not?

I'm trying to get used to this new Nokia e71 but I really don't like Symbian very much - despite people talking about how "powerful" it is. The stupid thing won't even let me remove apps from my home menu such as "AT&T GPS" and "AT&T Music". Won't even let me move them into the folder I created for them - "Useless" - which is where "Yellow Pages", "Cellular Video", "Media Mall", and "Media Net" all ended up.

Would happily make the switch to Android if it were/is possible.
