Hot on the heels of their successful advertising campaign to make consumers see a PC running Windows as a better value than a Macintosh, Microsoft is now declaring “It’s Better With Windows“! The new website, aimed at Asus Eee PC users, reminds us that “Windows helps you quickly and easily get online and connect to your devices and services — without dealing with an unfamiliar environment or major compatibility issues“! Oooh, burn! Watchoo gonna do, Linux?
The site contains a couple small text blurbs, and several variations of the same commercial showing a family using an Eee PC running Windows. As far as I’m concerned, the page may as well have been written by Gerald Holmes for all the substantive information it provides. Very little of what’s shown in the commercials are Microsoft specific benefits: there are productivity and video chat solutions for Linux, and I’ve not had many problems with USB-connected devices lately, either.
One astute Slashdot commenter suggests that this site has little to do with Asus directly, and more to do with the Goliath that is Microsoft PR.
Anyway, happy Thursday, everyone!

It’s better with HouseTrip! :) check out why…
pay one time microsoft tax, and relax.
Microsoft are such a joke
Microsoft IS such a joke.
jason IS such a joke
I’ve lost more hours of my life with Vista (with 4GB RAM no less) than any other OS. Vista is a quality of life destroyer IMO.
dude. you’re doing it wrong.
Microsoft haters.
Yawn.
Fail.
Lol.
LOL….. exactly.
You may be right, but I’ve used 9 other versions of Windows without issue. I’m also setting up a home NAS with Windows Storage Server now so I don’t have an issue with Microsoft in general.
Windows XP and 2000 – solid as a rock.
Windows Vista – been debugging intermittent freezes for months. Many hours wasted troubleshooting, downloading driver updates, changing settings, etc. I am generally OS agnostic. I just want whatever I am using to work.
That’s because hardware vendors manufacture their product to suit Windows NOT Linux.
Funny thing is, if you look at the background image for the site, it was edited on Photoshop CS 4 on the Mac.
Unless you’ve been told, how do you figure? As if there isn’t a PhotoShop CS4 for Windows.. Um?
Probably the metadata in the image file.
Office on a mac sux.
I <3 Excel.
PC wins.
Just noticed that the TechCrunch feed is now only showing a summary of each post rather than the full text in my RSS reader… hmm…
Scratch that… the TechCrunch feed looks like its now blasting out the abbreviated CrunchGear posts, someone “crossed the streams” it seems
no seriously, linux desktop has, is, and will forever suck. However, hold your horses microsoft. Wait for the first android netbooks
What you talking…
Android is Linux. Guess those netbooks will be phony and a lot will like it.
My Debian desktop certantly does not suck, but it rocks most. My girlfriend suck and I love her.
XP and Win7 is very bad. Stupid an confuzius. And mostly a bit rotten with a lot of scary diseases. STAY AWAY!
Does english suck?
English is a lot like Windows. It’s a very unwieldy language, and requires a lot of support to make it do what you want. Hundreds of millions of people use it natively, and billions out of economic necessity.
So much has been built on top of it that it would be difficult or impossible to untangle it from the fabric of our world economy without a cataclysmic disruption as a catalyst.
MKR, roflmao
I absolutely love your analogy of the English language and all things Microsoft!
you sir = future college professor
Why they don’t say “better with Vista” ?
Because is not.
Sending this from my fantabulous Ubuntu.
They say it because it’s true. And Linux will continue to eat map reduce turds.
Got to wonder if that is *actually* going to benefit them in the long run, or if it will alert users that were previously happily unaware that they weren’t running Windows (yes, there are surprisingly many who couldn’t tell you whether or not they run Windows if their life depended on it) that it’s not so scary to not run Windows at all.
I know someone who just got a Dell Mini (or whatever their netbook is called) with Ubuntu on it. She picked it up in about 5 minutes and doesn’t even want to load Windows onto the machine! Take that Microsoft! Oh and I should point out, she’s far from a computer geek, or even “power” computer user. Trust me. It was a challenge explaining how to input her WPA key into her old Windows laptop over-the-phone. when it happened to have issues and she ran the restore CD. (I still don’t know what happened, I just got a phone call saying she ran the restore CD but now the wireless won’t work.)
Ubuntu? Is it really that easy? Is everything still plug and play?
Your wise information is well appreciated.
“Is everything still plug and play?”
Answer1: No
Answer2: Ubuntu has support for most devices you think of plugging in. Not all. But same goes for Mac and even Win.
Also most devices comes with software which does not work on Ubuntu. Usually there are solutions for Ubuntu but you have to find them. search/ask on the Ubuntu forums…
Girlfriend had some initial problems with transfering files from/to her ipod and her SE phone, but there were solutions and she is happy.
Tech is free
Ubuntu plug and play is really spectacular.
I plugged in this old ass wireless usb dongle and it actually *worked.*
Without having to wire it to the router and download any updates or anything. Really cool.
My girl also run Ubuntu (xubuntu) on her laptop and she like it too. Like it better than the old XP :-)
Runs smoother, boots faster, and she can forget about the virus spyware troubles. She have all software she wants from Ubuntu-repos.
It has become more fashionable to bash MS as person bashing assumes people around think he/she is some techy expert.
Maybe your right. I am no expert but I know some bash. And I dislike most MS software.

This article is lost on TC because most folks here are mac fanboys.
This article should be titled:
“Windows goes after linux, but MAC’s are still better than PC’s”
You would have gotten 8x the comments.
Amen!
In one word….BORING…
That would be an appropriate slogan – PCs don’t have a gaming deficiency.
Anyone notice that the video states that Microsoft Works is ‘Preinstalled” now I’ve installed XP plenty of times and not once have I seen Works installed on a default installation….odd..way to throw that one in there M$. OEM pre-installs are a different story..uhh can you say bloatware? Agree?
Microsoft – innovative, impactful, and mother f*ckin’ RICH

Microsoft Haters – annoying, mindlessly whiney, mother f*cking’ broke

*Oops* I mean’t Microsoft Users….Uh-Duh
Aw sh!t… I have no idea what I mean’t now…Ugh
The fundamental problem with Windows is not that it functions poorly. The problem is that it’s not free, as in freedom. The same goes for MacOS. Use a free OS, whether that be GNU/Linux or a BS,D and you’ll have freedom.
LOL.. what do you want next for free Mr. Gregg? Gasoline? Food? Wait… I know.. healthcare is already being planned to be a giveaway… so it has to be MONEY! Free MONEY! That’s what you want next.. don’t ya? Gives you all the freedom you want!
Congrats, you’ve succeeded in flaming a post you haven’t read. Would you like a medal?
