Mea culpa. So I said the iPhone wouldn’t light up. It was too tacky. Who wants lights on an iPhone, right? Wrong. A tipster has seen the new matte iPhone and the bugger has a light-up Apple. That’s right: it lights the freak up. Who knew? What in the name of Soleil Moon-Frye is going on here?
Also, there will be a new bezel. President Obama should hold a press conference. This outrage will not stand.

The target for Apple’s next professional software package may be web design and development. I hear that Apple is deep into development for a comprehensive, modular software suite for web design and development. Something that fully supports the latest open standards, and generates the cleanest possible code. It will support files from Adobe Creative Suite and almost any other graphics software, of course, but will also have powerful built-in graphics tools. It will also include an extremely robust and open environment for coding and programming.
Apple realizes this category is fractured and does not have a distinct leader. Design and development of a website typically involves many software packages from different vendors with many hurdles to jump. Apple wants to provide to beginning to end solution with typical ease of use and consistency.
Apple is frustrated with Adobe. Their software is buggy and crash-prone. They are resource hogs, eating up processor cycles and drive space. The interface ignores Apple standards and is constantly changing. The installation, in typical Adobe fashion, is incredibly slow and needlessly complex, with a “custom” interface that is totally un-intuitive.
But Apple and Adobe are married, for better or for worse. For many creative professionals, Adobe’s software comprises the bulk of their “Apple user-experience”, and this drives Steve Jobs crazy. However, Adobe owns the print space outright. Apple could purchase Adobe easily, and I pray to all gods holy and profane every day for this to happen, but Steve Jobs reportedly doesn’t want that bag of worms dropped on his desk.
Adobe does not own the web space though. Certainly they have a significant presence, and Flash is a standard. But this category, in Apple’s eyes, is seriously under-developed in comparison to others, and could be ripe for a coup.
Enter code name Gossamer. A software package that will appeal to a design-only crew and a hard-core programmer equally. Seamless integration with not only iPhoto and GarageBand and Co., but Final Cut, Aperture and Logic. Incredible QuickTime tools. But the big thing is a Flash alternative.
That’s all I know.
And this is relevant to the iPhone, how?
As long as it does all the Snagit, Captivate and Articulate can do It sounds like a good idea to me.
Adobe and their Hangers On have been dragging their feet for too long now, if they don’t want or incapable of providing Mac alternatives then maybe it time to go it alone. MS are trying it with their Silver thingy, so time to put Adobe on the back burner and mover forward with workable alternative.
I’m mesmerized already. Now, wherever I blink I see apples.
Craptastic! Do they not own an iPhone to understand the battery life contraints?! In addition to the existing drains on my battery they are going to add a friggin lightbulb? Better be a way to turn that off!
not to worry as the batteries are nuclear powered.
No idiot they will do it (if they do it) the same way their laptops have the glowing Apple icon, the backlight from the screen will light up the apple. This is pretty common practice, all phones with a screen on both sides do it (i.e. almost all flip phones).
Jim
The big difference you’re forgetting is that unlike on a MacBook’s screen, the iPhone has all of the phone’s hardware packed between the backlight and the back of the phone. A second backlight would be needed, much like is needed for flip phones. (That trick only works when there is nothing opaque between the backlight and secondar screen)
So don’t call people idiot when you yourself don’t understand the facts. Thanks.
I don’t condone name calling either, but couldn’t they use a light pipe to bring the photons around the electrical guts
It’s going to be like E.T ‘iPhone home’ :)
How reliable is this tipster? Do they have an established track record or semblance of proof?
he saw it with his own two eyes.
The issues are greater than battery life for me. I love my 1st gen iPhone but I always feel reasonably uneasy pulling it out in some areas of town, particularly after dark. If it’s got a pucking light-up Apple logo on the back of it, it might as well have a scrolling display reading “MUG ME!!…. MUG ME!!…”
Hopefully we can turn it off, or that if it’s linked to the backlight (somehow :/) it’ll automatically be off whilst holding the phone up to your ear, as the screen’s off.
Still, it’ll make your iPhone all the more obvious when texting in the dark.
And you’ll look like a dick.
ding ding ding!
Enter black electrical tape…
Maybe you should butch up if you don’t want to get mugged. That’s as ridiculous a statement as people saying you’ll get robbed if you wear the white earbuds. iPod owns 70% of the market. There’s a 7/10 chance that you’re using an iPod. If you’re going to get mugged, chances are nowadays they’ll mug you for any touchscreen device you have.
As for the dick comment, I never heard anybody say that the Apple logo on their laptops look stupid. Suddenly it would look bad on a phone? Please. If you look like a dick, chances are it’s not the phone.
Obviously you don’t live in a urban area. Pulling out an iPhone is basically advertising to muggers in certain places. No amount of ‘butching up’ is going to stop someone with a gun who wants what you got. I have a friend who got shot 3 times in DC (he lived) for his iPhone and a couple more pistol whipped for iPods. They didn’t take ANYTHING but the iPhone/iPod.
You should have the ability to turn off the glowing logo just as you would for an LED message notification on old clamshells.
Can we use this light as torch while camping??? If not, I don’t care :-)
Give me one good reason to buy the new iphone if I own the old one. The only one I can think of is to calm the wrath of the almighty god Jobs.
better camera….
I can’t believe everyone is missing it. The Apple won’t light up all the time–it’s the camera flash.
You heard it here first. :-)
Get me two pair, I need two pair, keep on rockin’ my IPhone one. Gosh, what will the boys and girls in Cuppertino think of next. I’ll raise them the Apple and raise them one better. I want a profile of one Steve Jobs so that all of the fanboys and fangirls will be able to spot one another in the dark. See you at $200+ kids.
All apologies to Nelly.
Rumer rumers!! WE will find out when it comes out. Although I think It would be cool if it lit up. Adn it wouldent be bright enough to be the flash for the camera if it was the back light. And the backlight will light it up just like on the macbooks.
Uh, camera flash…
Yup. Camera flash make perfect sense ndt fixes one of the biggest problems with the iPhone camera, bad low light images.
PUNK-YYYYY!!!
“A weird iPhone Apps site has some prognostications on the new iPhone. The worst thing? They appear to be patently false. Here are their “major” revelations:”
From your original post… how did we become a “weird iPhone Apps site” ?
We never claimed the revelations to be set in stone, only proclaimed them to be from a source who has turned out to be accurate for us in the past. Looks like maybe we’re on the right track this time. If this revelation turned out to be true we can only hope your ignorant statements about the OLED screens are false as well
Guess we’ll all find out soon. i used to have such respect for crunchgear, but to turn around and call our site “weird” when we’re well established, have a good user base, and write quality reviews and articles is just beyond my scope of understanding.
I’m glad to see you may have to pull your toes from the back of your throat soon :)
I’d certainly want the glowing Apple logo, so it will match up with my MacBook Pro. There are so many iPhones on Manhattan streets and in the subways, that the muggers will have to decide who to mug. A snatcher recently ran off with Kevin Bacon’s BlackBerry in the subway, so any smartphone is fair game.
Apple will have the glowing logo first and then every damn smartphone will soon be getting one.
what is the point except to make the new iPhone easier to identify and steal…..oh yes and use up value battery power. If it is added then must come with an OnOff switch.
I think someone else already stated, as with most devices (including the macbook), the light is actually coming from the screen, otherwise it will be an LED which uses little to no power anyway. Battery life is not an issue w/ a glowing logo.
You’re wrong.
First the iPhone has a lot of things between the screen and the logo (the phone part) for it to act like a macbook.
Secondly, for it to serve double duty as a camera flash, it would need it’s own dedicated light source. A backlight from a screen would not generate enough light to serve as a flash.
it’s = “IT IS” … always.
“…it would need ITS own…”
Sloppy. Get with the program.
Oh I didn’t know I was getting graded. Read a post that I wrote earlier on this thread. I said “If you look like a dick, chances are it’s not the iPhone.”
You fit that statement perfectly.
thinking about it, i’m not sure it could be lit by the backlight of the screen. aren’t the phone’s internal guts packed pretty tight in there between the screen and the rear shell?
the macbook works because it’s screen>shell. the phone has to be screen>guts>shell, thus creating the need for an individual light source. the only plus to this would be to flash when the phone rings or a message comes in so if you’ve got it on silent and it’s within your line of sight you’d see this notification. otherwise it’s a wasted circuit and yeah, an advertisement that we’re on an iphone. i can’t think apple would really do this as it does give a sort of ‘toy-ish’ aesthetic to what should be a sleek piece of equipment.
@str1f3:
“otherwise it will be an LED which uses little to no power anyway. Battery life is not an issue w/ a glowing logo.”
My comment addressed the issue if they couldn’t use the backlight to light the logo. But it’s moot anyway. Apple has gone to great lengths to try to preserve battery life, as far as even stopping background processes from being allowed to run on the phone, I’m sure will be their prime consideration regardless of implementation.
What are you guys saying ?????? These comment were so full of S@#t i had to post.
1. If your a iphone user and you set your iphone down and you don’t hear the sound notification, the flashing light is a great idea especially with Push notification coming in 3.0 .
2. Silent-mode is silent. How many time have you heard buzzing iphones on conference tables. A simple flash of light let you know that confirmation email from a sale has come in without distracting people in a meeting.
3. The one thing i hate about my iphone is the lack of light or flash when I want that nightclub shot!
4. What about the hearing impaired……a lot of blackberry/sidekick/iphones were sold for text based communication so a flashing light on the iPhone would also help these people be aware of texts and e-mail with out having to have it in their pockets….
5. Battery….Come on people, Apple has always had ways of dealing with power management. They have a whole division that is focussed on that. so adding a light should take about 2% of battery life. And knowing apple UX design there will be a option to turn it off. So if you really need that 2% to get to the final level of Spore Origins…LOL
Wow… Should I write for Tech Crunch or What
thats all…
Urbstar
Google that
…and all over a little Apple shaped light ! I can see your “silent” and hearing impaired ideas would make this a useful tool. Roll on next week, when we will finally know.
you mean, “…if YOU’RE an iPhone user…”
“you’re” = you are
“your” is a possessive pronoun like HIS or MY.
C’mon people! It ain’t hard! jeez…
Wow squish you just proved your lameness by grammar checking. Damn I’m bet “your” days are spent wishing “you’re” cool. Douche bag.
Thank you for the English grammar lesson, although a little insensitively delivered, it has been noted.
On a more salient note, it continues to make me chuckle, so much fuss over an illuminated logo.
Hey Urbstar,
You are the best!
I love your comment! #4 is right way to go…. for deaf/ HOH community. We need that to have flash light for our attention. I can’t wait to see the new unveiling of iPhone in 2 weeks! By the way, I am deaf hearing impaired and I love Apple. They understand and working with universal setting for disability people. Thank god for Steve Job & AT&T.
I agree totally with Urbstar… he said it all quite eloquently.
How would this work when the LCD turns off when you hold the phone to your face? The only other time you might hold a phone upright for the logo to be seen is when taking photos, but it won’t be useful as a camera flash at the range. (Maybe as feedback to other people that a photo has been taken, or that a video is being taken.)
yeah sounds lame but in reality apple needs a external light that can be used to offer a notification that yo have a waiting whatever. Not having that right now combined with the lack of nag functions for the pim pretty much makes that function set garbage imo.
Course if it’s not being used that way then it’s enormously lame.
New next generation iPhone pictures leaked! Check it here : http://bawaal.com/blog/?p=364
OK thats a photoshop job :(
