Microsoft just announced sales of Xbox 360 consoles have passed the 30 million mark globally, up 28 percent  over last year, which it claims  is the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009. In addition, the Xbox LIVE community has grown to over 20 million users, coming from 26 countries.

And these users spend money, too. In a press release touting the sales numbers, Microsoft claims U.S. consumers alone have spent $14.5 billion across all categories on Xbox 360 at retail, and consumers worldwide have downloaded close to 1 billion pieces of gaming and entertainment content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace to date.

It was recently reported that PlayStation sales plummeted 18 per cent overall during fiscal year 2008, although the numbers appear to be picking up again this year.

  • wow not super amazing numbers but healthy sales

    looking forward to E3 2009

  • Approximately 10 000 of those sales thanks to the red ring of death?

  • Not again, please. TC plays news service for Microsoft. Distressing.

… Nintendo sold over 50 million Wiis.
… “which it claims is the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009″ – wtf. MS searched two weeks and finally found a way to say they are the best? Nintendo sold double the pieces Microsoft did.

For everybody interested in real numbers instead of this PR bull****: http://www.vgchartz.com/

@techcrunch: please stop praising Microsoft to the skies. You’re doing it far to plump.

    • No RSS feeds at VGchartz.com? Seriously?

    • How many games do those 50 million Wii owners own? Most Wii owners only play the game that comes with the system and/or Wii Fit.

How many of those Wii owners are paying Nintendo for their “live” service. Zero. MS is making so much more per XBox 360 owner that Nintendo is not even in the ball park.

    • @Icke

I, for myself, like to have this kind of news.

    • icke — they are targeted at different audiences. The Wii is for a larger mass market and the xbox and PS3 are for a smaller core gamer market (who also spend a lot more money on games). I’m actually probably the only one left who thinks the PS3 is better but I have to give MSFT credit for the Xbox 360 numbers – they are very respectable indeed. @robblewis

    • LOL.. I guess you’d just like to listen to Google Radio I guess.

    • nintendo wii fucking sucks. the only reason why they sold so many is due to the fact that all kids want one and old people can play it. when it comes to a true gamer, wii is child play. nothing against nintendo, i have been using it all my life and the wii is innovative but with their demographic it is obvious to see how they outsold.

  • Ya but the wii isnt a next gen system. Its a next gen controler but I read above a 6th grade level and i wlecome anyone to list the features that would make either the wii or xbox 360 a better machine. It’s just that people are broke and settling for the cheaper inferior systems. Anyone who got a 360 or a wii then played around with the ps3 will see what I’m talking about. I had all 3 and I sold the wii after a week because i couldn’t deal with how gay it was graphicly, the games sucked hard, and i have a gym membership for exercise, and after my 2nd rrod i made the choice to buy a ps3 and ive been happy ever since.

    • Wow, and with the 2 good games PS3 has, I bet you have just loads of fun with it….Any new game that comes out these days for the PS3 if any good will be on the XBOX 360 too. And the XBOX Live kicks PS3’s butt. Face it Sony fanboy. between Wii and XBOX, your days are numbered. Oh wait they do have blueray, so at least it makes a good dvd player.

    • “i wlecome anyone to list the features that would make either the wii or xbox 360 a better machine.”

XBOX LIVE. ’nuff said. It’s just vastly superior to the clunky and difficult to use PSN.

    • 360 Has Better graphics because it has a better GPU than the PS3, While the PS3 Has a little better power from it’s CPU. Other than the rrod which has been fixed in the new Jasper systems the 360 provides a better overall online gaming experience on xbox live.

  • Wow that many Xboxes have been bought and returned, no wonder Microsoft is probably still taking a loss. Let’s face it the 360 has a 100% failure rate. Everyone I know had one go bad on them.

  • The XBOX360 has a great interface and I can play movies from my PC with it. Live works really well too. MS just needs to incorporate the Live experience with their online services and they will have a runaway hit.

  • Do the console vendors perceive onlive.com to be a potential threat? I wonder whether the big research bucks at Microsoft/Sony is already being channeled to counter the threat.

  • FIRST OF ALL EVERYONE NEEDS TO SHUT UP AND LISTEN FOR ONCE!

I own the 3 latest consoles (wii, 360, PS3) I am being completely honest when I say this other than my PC my PS3 sees more game time than the 360 or wii. I might be alone in this demographic but if you own a competent PC and a PS3 you will probably do most of your gaming on either one of those. PS3 online is free and you dont always get stuck with crappy connections I can deal with it why cant you?

PC gaming is where its at, I can spend hours playing Left 4 Dead; simply put I love that game. Then I can spend time with ym wife playing Little Big Planet or Rockband, GHWT, we beat MGS4 together. We watch Blue Ray movies together on our bombay TV. I mean the PS3 is a power house of media capabilities and I dont care what any fanboy says.

Note: I never said your beloved 360 sucked even though I think it does I just am saying that the PS3 has so much to offer and is a very attractive package when you have the right equipment to compliment it. Oh and of course I stream from my Win7 PC to my PS3 its great I got a lot of blue ray rips to enjoy as well. Guys only thing that can whoop on the PS3 in my opinion is my gaming rig.

Pe@ce and now commence the childish flame wars; or you can agree with me and accept that the PS3 will begin its rise to dominance this year.

because i was bored here’s some rough taxless estimates to gaze upon.

    30,000,000 360’s old
    =$14,500,000,000
if they only bought the arcade at $199.99 that totals $5,999,700,000 subtract that from the 14.5 bil and you get
$8,500,300,000.00 at $60.00 per game that comes out to 141,671,666.67 games sold / 30,000,000 360’s = 4.7223 games per customer

5 games per owner sounds about right. Now keep in mind that all of this doesn’t take into account accessories and what not.

    Let’s go math!

    • Excellent! I like to see someone that gets numbers. I would actually lower the ASP avg to $45 as you know people have at least one discounted game in there and you end up with about 6 games per user. Not bad at all. @robblewis

    360’s sold*

  • I think xbox live is nice but how much do us ps3 owners pay to play on our network oh thats right it’s free. And my cod lobby fills up just as quick as it did on live but its a little more staisfying becuase its FREE!!!! Not to mention this fancy bluray player is probaly gonna be the biggest upgrade that the new xbox comes out. How about a web browser? Sorry, I forgot you dont have one. Motion sensing contols? Man, as the list goes on you 360 owners seem pretty dumb. And the only 2 games that are excluse to the 360 is halo (which I wouldn’t mind having) and gears of war, and that games was a huge disapointment. Oh and Fabel but im not a japaneese school girl so you can keep that one

  • I own 7 xbox 360 games, but only bought 2 of them new. I buy most of my games used.

  • To the 360 Fan Girls….

You can give all that you can, but you will never top that!
You can dream until you’re blue but you can never top that

LOL Go Teen Witch! hee hee…………

  • I’d love to see some exact stats on how many systems Microsoft has had to replace due to red ring of death hardware failures, and the total cost of replacing them.

I’ve gone through three already, one or which only lasted 3 weeks. Even if their strategy is to sell the core system at a loss and make money off games and peripherals, how much of a hit are they taking on replacing all these systems? The shipping alone has got to be killing them. And by my experience at least, the systems don’t seem to be improving in longevity so it’s a systemic problem.

  • enough video game talk lets talk Lakers, 2008-2009 NBA Champions

  • Its all about Orlando Nuggets with the Nuggets winning in 6

  • The bottom line is the dollar. Wii is $$$$. Dreamcast was next gen and where is it now? If you really want to get old school the Intellisystem was next gen but what kid ever really cared when they could play on the Atari. I keep hearing about ground breaking games for the PS3 and then nothing ever happens. You have to have a total package and Nintendo and Microsoft have hit their target markets. Last 3 things…
    1. I DONT WANT A SUPER COMPUTER SYSTEM, I just want to play FPS online and have fun. Xbox live does it.
    2. I DONT WANT TO PAY 600 UP FRONT TO GET A SUPER SYSTEM, I got my 360 and two games for 399 when it first came out; good deal. I have had it 2 years and it has rrod once and it didnt cost me a dime. Returned fixed in 5 days, shipping paid. 3. COMPUTER GAMING IS FULL OF HACKS AND CHEATS, i want a level playing field and a console gives you the best chance.

  • I know several gamers that bought the Wii and returned it or sold it after a few weeks.

I have an XBOX 360 and other than sports games, the PC plays much better. Mouse+keyboard > controller with 10 buttons.

One thing that is not mentioned is that the XBOX is the system with the easiest development tools to use. It is based on DirectX and games developed for it will generally port well to the PC and vice-versa. Note the games that are out for the Wii are some of the worst rated games out there (do a search on IGN/gamespot/gametrailers)…they are like the “free” games on the iPhone developed by a 15 year old kid.

XBOX 360 might not be the best console ever. However, you do have to give them credit that it is probably has the most all around features and greatest choice of high quality games currently…don’t believe me? Walk into your local GameStop and count how many sections/rows are dedicated to the PS3/Wii or XBOX.

  • lets face it xbox is making money & the PS3 is not. its all due to no games on the PS3. Xbox has halo, gears, & many many more.

  • …. and while can’t find 3 minutes to get some rest, xbox is used like crazy. :D

  • i have bought plenty of these systems, but wouldn’t you like to play them on the go. like in your car, i do. so you should come check out my blog at andreasfault9.blogspot.com and check out some products i have to offer. please comment!

  • now, if microsoft could just pass some of that positive xbox mojo over to bing!
