And yet Skype has numbers pointing to >30% of their call volume involving video.

Polycom, Grandstream and others have recently introduced new video phones calling them "Media Phones." That's really the downward expansion of video conferencing to the desktop for business purposes.

Videophones have been a reality for decades now, they never took off.

People tried them time and time again, each and every time they failed.

The reason is that people just plain do not care to see a damn video while on a call, not to mention there are many times when someone does not want to transmit a video.

How often does somebody use the video functions of a PS3 or 360 over just a plain ol headset? Even when they have the camera?

Hell, I remember an old episode of Home Improvement when AL installed a videophone in his house, the tech has been here since like what, the 50s? Its just that nobody cares or wants it. The few that do are far far outweighed by the ones that do not.

This was even tried with cellphones a few years ago, with it being abandoned shortly after because nobody cared for it.

Well, provided that you have the bandwidth, Skype is a video phone. We use it all the time to have a face to face 'call' with friends and family all over the world.

I would love a video phone in my near future that is reliable and cost worthy...linksys has got a start on it, and pretty sure a few others for meetings and such, but would like to see it become mainstream. The iphone is close, but not with AT&T as their provider! Here's to hoping!
