Moments ago at E3, Microsoft showed off it’s upcoming motion sensing system. Project Natal – that’s codename – will work with every 360 when it launches and will be available on all the new systems. It has full body motion control by tracking 3D movement. Plus it recognizes voices, and totally immerses the players into the game. You can use your own gear like a skate board and such. Basically it kicks the Wii’s ass in the interactive gaming field. That is if the system works as well as the Microsoft video shows.
We have two questions: when and for how much?
Update: It seems that the pricing might have been revealed early by Brier Dudley at The Seattle Times. His post, which went up 45 minutes before the press conference, states that the price will be around $200. Who knows where the number came from so we’re labeling this one as a rumor for now.

Yes, I’m pretty sure I heard that Natal will becoming out in late 2010. I have also been hearing that Microsoft might try for late 2009. And the price that Microsoft is setting Natal at is unbelievable. I was thinking around $500, but people have been saying that Natal is going to go for $200. If Microsoft can pull something out of their ass and come anywhere close to $200, this new system is going to definitely be the future of gaming.

The other thing to take into consideration, for comparrison, is how much a Wii set up is…. now I am not suggesting we will all go and buy Wiis if this is overpriced, but if its somewhere in the same ballpark I think it could be a costly exercise.

you obviously do not understand what this thing does. it scans your body, it senses when your eye twitches, it can tell when you even slightly move a finger. Its amazing, it has voice recognition, facial recognition, body recognition. You can be your character now, not just a video of you on the screen.
Ok, I pretty much HATE everything MS does… But would you idiots STOP calling this an enhanced eyetoy!!! This does WAY more than a web cam can do! 3D imaging is not quite the same as a piece of shit camera that cannot even autofocus. That 200 is buying WAY more than just a glorified webcam.
The only real issue here is going to be accuracy. As seen in one of the movies included, it can be an epic fail. So they are going to have to iron out some bugs (not exactly MSs strong point…). But I am excited to see the final product and will withhold my judgement till then.

Eyetoy lacks the speech recognition system. And the refresh rate for movement tracking seems quite improved. I’m looking forward to this as this represents a jump form any other motion tracking accesory.

From a computer science perspective, any comparison with EyeToy is beyond laughable. That said, the videos appear to be made of 50% cheese. Delivering what they promise will be extremely difficult, so it seems unlikely Microsoft will pull this one off as well as they claim. However, Microsoft has been putting mountains of effort into pattern recognition: Tablet PC handwriting, voice recognition in Vista (.NET 3.0) and neat little projects like Photosynth (photosynth.net). They just might pull it off.

Gentlemen, it’s called evolution. While this technology isn’t new (Alas, it’s quite explored in university projects), Microsoft is taking it ahead, and exploring it. Yes, it will be expensive, but from a technological point of view, it’s something worth exploring. So yes, it might look like a Eyetoy and even a Wii ripoff, but at least they’re reproducing and making them better. Someday, another company will come behind, and do the same thing, and make it even better.
Why not explore the potential of Project Natal with new forms of gameplay, which aren’t overused by your favorite shooting, rpg and driving games? Also, if you miss the remote/gun/car wheel in your hands, it’s simple: use similar objects from the house, to simulate the feeling. No need to waste more money on additional components to plain certain games, which is the case with Wii.
I hope Microsoft is reasonable enough (can only hope) to let freelancer developers and university students play with this new toy, and bring up their own creations. We’ll get a lot of rubbish for sure, but some marvelous projects as well.

It truley has ‘wowed’ me. The response that the camera has is unbelievable, it really is the next generation, and blows the wii control out of the water in my eyes. Only time will tell whether it actually performs, and good, inventive games are made around it. But after seeing those videos, it really does look like microsoft are pushing the bounderies once again in this generation.

If this comes out the wii is toast because this looks much better than the wii’s controller along with voice recognition and it can also see multiple people at the same time. The wii wil probably still be played for awhile after but if this is released it may bring a premature death for the wii.

Just because Natal has been made doesn’t mean controllers are going away totally, there will still be controllers for the less energetic gamer and games will most likely support them along with the Natal tech, However, peripherals are bulky, costly, and space consuming, those will be the first to go especially in games like Rock Band or GH. Also, with mylo it will help people with the disability Aspergers or Autism tremendously, because it will be a fun and easy way for them to learn social awareness. which is something i know would help through experiences with friend 200 dollars is cheaper than the thousand i know are spent on children with autism to get the proper meds and therapies needed.
Controllers aren’t going anywhere. You can’t get anywhere close to the level of precision a controller provides with Natal. That’s why the art game only let you splash paint on the canvas instead of letting you draw.
You can still sit back and relax with your controller. It’s not stupid. It’s a choice. Don’t knock the technology. You DON’T have to buy it. But for the ones that do like to play this way, it’s great. Otherwise sit down and connect the controller like always.

Remember, Wi is not a true motion capture system. If Natal can track the users hand and foot speed as well as motion, it will then be a far superior system. Wi only tracks about 25% of a users motion, and very little of a users speed. So the Natal looks promising.

They explicitly stated that the Project Natal setup runs on all Xbox 360’s… no new hardware (other than the camera setup itself). Also, the company who developed the motion sensing camera told Ars Tecnica last year they could sell it at that time for under $80.
