So what do we make of Final Fantasy XIV? The game, which will be an MMO à la Final Fantasy XI, was announced at some point during Sony’s 18-and-a-half hour press conference at E3. The trailer is available online, but I haven’t yet figured out a way to grab it and put it here. Oh, well.
I think the main issue people are having is this: where is Final Fantasy XIII? How about Square Enix release that game before it goes and announces the next one?
And unless Final Fantasy XIV is demonstrably better than Final Fantasy XI, to say nothing of that pesky game called World of Warcraft, I can’t see too many old school RPG fans giving it much of a chance. That was literally my reaction: “Oh, it’s online? Never mind then.”
To Square Enix’s credit, the game is scheduled for a worldwide simultaneous release sometime in 2010. Komoto, the director of Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy XI, will direct the game. And Akihiko Yoshida, of Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII fame, is in charge of art direction.

Online…meh, pass here too.
The FF series should stick with what people love them for and leave the MMO for other titles/series.
A fresh MMO might be nice, but I’m kind of just wanting the next FF game already. I hate waiting, especially for FF, they take FOREVER. Granted, its always worth the wait.
eh … link seems a itchy bit wrong to me !
or it doesnt work for me like that !
FFXI was a great game.. XIV seems like an evolution to that.. and I for one enjoy a good MMO, and whether or not a few people like it.. There’s no doubt atleast 2mill people are going to try it out when it comes out =P
I loved FFXI. I think it was just too hard for a lot of people. I hope they take a lot of the ideas from FFXI and bring them over to XIV. The jobs system as well as the jobs themselves and the NMs I would LOVE to see in XIV. Sure, NMs were difficult to catch sometimes and the respawn timers could be crazy long but that’s also what gave a lot of it it’s uniqueness to other MMO’s. Plus not everyone would have their drops then. Although I think they have learned from their mistake with RMT camping NMs when they switched tons of drops to rare/ex. I’m sure they’re bring that over from the start so that prices aren’t hiked up to millions of gil like on FFXI. Only things I’d REALLY like to be changed from FFXI is Lv75 rabbit or ladybug mobs because no one want’s to hit top level then get killed by a ladybug. Then more character customization during creation, which I’m sure they will have since so many people complained about it. I wonder if they’re going to keep the races or make new ones. They’ll probably bring in Viera since they were such a big hit…I’m excited.
I too really enjoyed FFXI (it was very demanding and RMT people where a giant pain and made it very hard to purchase items later on). I’d love if they kept the subjobs and the ability to change jobs (That was one of my favorite points).
They released on the 3rd in their press-conference that the races will be similar to FFXI (i.e. they will have some that look the same and all) but their stats will be different (comparable to one actor playing in different movies).
Over all I hope that they make a good game that can be a bit more casual, but is still challenging (no point in playing a game that is easy)
I completely agree. I also really hope they keep the same jobs and maybe add a few more. One thing you really don’t see in a lot of MMO’s is a martial arts class like Monk. I’m almost considering joining FFXI again for the time being after reading all of the updates they’ve added to help out solo play.
FFXIV seems interseting, but there only one thing that makes it hard for an average player to play, which is the party system and level. To level at a decent speed, you would need a decent party where everyone knows what they’re doing. Soloing is out of the question most of the time and if you screw up, you really screw up. Another thing about the party system is you need to catch people on prime time for a decent party. Not many people are on unless it’s prime time in a certain location. Wish they would make it so that it’s possible to level by soloing, but also find a way to make partying beneficial. Like exp bonus for partying while being able to solo to get your levels up. Besides that one portion, everything else is really nice to have.
Omg.. hearing about this.. was probably the best news of my life.
Final fantasy XI was and still is such a huge part of my life, and seriously hearing that they’re making a sequel brought tears to my eyes.
I STILL CAN”T BELIEVE IT.. Omg.
I feel like I’m dreaming. ; ;
FFXI was and always will be the best mmo on the planet.
Screw you haters!!! FFXI FOREVER :’O <333
I think anytime you find yourself screaming, “Screw you haters!” it’s time to reevaluate your position on the topic..
FFXI was a great leader of the market in its time. Tons of problems and a bunch of things that kept people interested. Imo, FFXI and EQ got people drooling over what an awesome mmorpg could be like which opened the door for WoW.
FFXIV will do well at the onset, regardless, but in order to get past the hump AoC and LOTRO were thwarted by, it has to revolutionize the industry again.
People want to group and solo. People want it to be easy to position themselves to grind exp. people want to play a game that doesn’t make it impossible for people to beat the rmt’s.
FFXI had an awesome job system, excellent combat combo concept, and a good storyline (if you could find it via lvling your rank).
Aside from that, the playonline viewer login situation was the hardest mob in the game to defeat. Control of character was basic at best, and the grind was epic. I’m not going into the abhorred pvp system.
Yes, we want a game to be challenging, but we dont want to wait 15 minutes for a boat ride.
That wastes our time, and even the most staunch advocates of assuming a role are willing to suspend their disbelief to not sit at the dock watching the clock tick away for hours on end.
SE should not duplicate WoW, and they wont, but they should learn from where Blizz succeeded. Right now, WoW is the most popular and highest grossing video game in the history of cyberplay.
Whether you are a FFXI truest, or WoW skeptic, there is alot to be said for the bottom line, and I believe SE is smart enough to build from their success.
Thx for reading^^

The turning high priced drops into rare/ex items update and constant banning of RMT was somethign SE did to help fight the constant RMT we’ve all dealt with. Which is more than can be said for a majority of other MMOs. Although Blizzard has banned a lot of RMT accounts WoW still seems to suffer from other player based problems though, such as dupe hacks. Also, the Playonline viewer does suck. SE has pretty much admitted to that when mentioning that FFXIV will not have it or anything like it. You relate challenging to a 15 minute boat ride as well. I wouldn’t call that much of a challenge, though it is annoying. I’m sure that’s also something that will be changed in FFXIV. As for the boat rides in FFXI, they are pretty much a one or two time deal. After you take the boat over to where ever it is that you’re going you usually go pick up the teleport crystal from the nearest crag and never deal with it again unless you use the boat for fishing where you’ll want that whole 15 minutes. You were right in saying SE won’t want to copy WoW, otherwise the game just wouldn’t be challenging and like you stated earlier we want the challenge. The challenge of FFXI is something that seemed to turn away a lot of players that just didn’t have the time or understanding to achieve much in the game. WoW was a MMO made to be easy, anyone could play and that was what helped to make it so high in gross. I’ve played many different MMOs and have seen good and bad in each of them. FFXI is by far my favorite, the movement controls are great imo. I can’t stand the movement controls of amny other MMO’s, Aion especially. FFXI has the challenge, the depth in story and play, the amazing job system no other MMO has seemed to adopt, the auto-translation function to communicate with other players that speak other languages (it might not be perfect, but it works and no one else has seemed to even try), and lastly it has the Notorious Monster system. Let’s face it, raiding is boring, especially when you do the same one 132 times. Not only that but it only caters to end-gamers. NMs in FFXI come in all shapes, sizes, and levels. Characters low and high will be able to take on NMs throughout their career. This is a welcome change from just buying generic items from shops or auction houses from start to end game. Although I believe both WoW and FFXI have gotten things right and wrong, I do NOT believe that WoW is the better game just because of the numbers.
Yeah, I do agree with the partying thing, Raijin. Although I wouldn’t really want it to be like in WoW where you can solo your way up to max level in a week if you wanted. Don’t make the game too easy now! I enjoyed the challenges of FFXI :D
I really wish people would stop nay saying mmo games. Why do people fight social gaming so? I strongly enjoy the ability to play with friends in my rpg titles. Needless to say i do play FFXI and look forward to FFxiv
I started playing the FF series when it was first released (I was an eight year-old trying to figure out how to equip weapons so I could fight Garland), and I’ve loved the series ever since. The release of XI broke my heart to a certain extent since I’ve never been an MMO fan, but nonetheless, I had to try it because of my love for the series. Even though I survive off a part time job and have plenty of time in my social life, I still find it hard to put enough time into MMO’s, and the only person I could party with was from another country, so we could never be on at the same time. I won’t say much since we don’t know a whole lot yet, but I hope they can make this game accessible to someone like myself. Guild Wars was the one MMO I tried that I could get into because it was easy to solo, and also since there’s no monthly fee, I felt comfortable getting on whenever I wanted and didn’t feel like I was wasting money. If they can do something with XIV to the extent of being able to solo and maybe have a couple party members help you (like in Guild Wars or Sword of the New World in which the computer controls them), I would like to try it, but my biggest concern is the story. That’s why I steer clear of MMO’s usually because all I care about in my games are the stories. Hopefully this game won’t lack that, but again, I can’t judge too early since the news of this game just hit us two days ago.
PS: FF IV the After Years has been a gift from Heaven! Bought a Wii just for it, and so far, it was well worth the money!
They added some updates in FFXI to help out with solo play. You can read about them here…

My only worry is the monthly subs…. Do you think they are using the same POL system? It was a bloody expensive affair playing XI on 360 (Squenix fees+Live fees=too bloody much, buy it on pc). Agree with earlier comments about party system and lack of soloing. Although in a way it is a good thing as it forces you to interact with people from other cultures and countries and work together towards a common goal (which is what mmos should be about imo). Games like WoW are fine for a while but it got stale very quickly for me…..
That’s sort of how I’m starting to feel towards AoC. All I really do is solo things all day until raids happen. I like the Notorious Monster system WAY better than this raiding dungeon bosses stuff. Especially since the reset timers on AoC are longer than most every NM’s respawn time in FFXI. I also agree with how the MMO + Xbox Live = costly monthly payments. So far it’s only on PS3 and PC though, but who knows in the end. The big thing POL seemed to do was stop the creation of a downloadable private server where you didn’t have to pay SE to play. They still can’t figure out how to get around POL to make a completely free FFXI.
you actually only need a Silver membership(free) to play. Also unless things change, which they probably will, its not supposed to come out for the 360.
forgot to add, they announced they aren’t going to be using Playonline.
Yeah, I just remembered the silver thing today and was going to correct myself. They said they’re considering putting it on 360 but it’s not confirmed. I read that they weren’t using POL this time too! That’s alright with me ;) Here is some more info…

will you have to pay a monthly fee for final fantasy 14?
This game looks stunning. I think even the early skeptics will be impressed. If Square Enix improves the areas where FFXI fell short, I’m sure it will be an amazing online experience.

I’ve had the chance to play wow and FFXI and i had a lot of fun with both, the few things missing from FFXI was versatility in the classes attacks. I believe they could have implemented the job system from Final fantasy tactics a little more. Doing the combo strike as a monk five hundred times a day got old. The ability to fight multiple high level enemies. In previous FF games you could survive the next level enemies you might run low on potions but you could. After those two things change FFXI would be perfect. The guys at Square enix are geniuses and Im positive that FFXIV will rock the MMORPG world, I cant wait to party up and smash dragon face in with all the FF Fans.
I think what SE was going for in FFXI was for players to play a character that was more of an everyday soldier/adventurer as opposed to the super powered overkill-with-one-sword-swipe (end game at least) type characters in the rest of the series’. At least that’s what I got from the game. It is an amazingly fun game but you’re right about possibly being able to do more than just a WS or JA every 2-5 minutes or more. I still love auto-attack though! :P
