This battery-powered lawn mower almost makes me wish I still had a lawn to mow. Almost. Vermont-based Neuton has apparently been selling the $399 CE 5 and $499 CE 6 models for a year or so now but this is the first I’ve heard of them. Anyone out there have one of these?
The CE 5 is good for 1/4 acre on a single charge while the CE 6 can handle yards up to 1/3 acre in size. The battery takes about 12 hours to recharge and you can buy extra batteries for $89 to $99, depending on capacity. Call me crazy, but $399 to $499 for a lawn mower that needs no gas or oil and doesn’t make quite as much noise actually seems like a good deal.
There is, of course, the big question: is it powerful enough to mow tough grass? The below video makes it appear that, yes, it is.
And here’s a video about the mower’s features and whatnot:

I think that battery mowers are the way forward. But reading your article gave me an idea for the best mower ever.
How about a Segway mower! How much fun would that be :-)
The neuton has been around for at least 7 years, its ancient and barely updated just like the black & decker electric lawnmower
I had the black and decker mower and it is good for moderate sized flat lawn. If you have anything over .3 acres, electric is not ideal unless you don’t mind stopping half way and recharge for 6 hours. As well, there is no self propel capability yet which makes electic mower less appealing.
Ah-ha! I knew they sounded too good to be true. No self propel = no purchase by me.
Things worth noting…
(1) Get 2 batteries and you can just swap the battery if it runs out halfway through your football field.
(2) The largest Neuton mower (the CE 6) weighs 69 lbs with battery, which is 20+ lbs less than most modern equivalent-sized gas mowers — you will have to push a lot less than you’re thinking you would from your gas mower experiences.
(3) Electric mowers are ubiquitous in the UK and Europe. In fact, they’ve had electric hover mowers like those produced by Flymo since 1965.
(4) Do a search for “lawn mower” at Amazon.com (US) and sort by popularity. The top 20 mowers are electric. My point? Electric mowers are more popular on Amazon.com than gas mowers, and if you decide to buy one today you have lots of options.
That’s all.
I own the 14″ version. It worked great for my old house (.3 acres), especially when I bagged (it used a lot more battery for mulching). Light enough to use one hand to push, quiet enough to talk on the phone while mowing (seriously), it’s a nice little machine. Where it sucks is when you move onto a .6 acre lot and you start paying Scotts to treat your lawn. I have more grass to mow, its thicker and it needs to be mowed more often. Need the bigger model.
I have had the small electric Neuton for several years and have had no trouble with it at all. About 3 years or whenever the C6 came out I right away purchased it. In tight places I still use the C5. I use them both to mow a rather large yard. The new one mows a larger path and it really helps save time.
I wonder about servicing. ASay after a year or two, or whenever, you need servicing, where do you take it and what does that cost (say the machine, for whatever mechanical reason, stops working). Are there options to get it fixed??
thanks.
I have a .3 acre lawn in Houston. I purchased my Neuton 6.2 mower in March of this year. It just “died” about 2 weeks ago. My experience with service has been very poor. Right now the mower is a plastic piece of junk in my garage.
Up to that point I would say it is light and quieter than gas but not as quiet as I expected. The mulching feature does not work well and robs a lot of battery power. I just barely had enough battery life on one charge to mow the lawn. My neighbors Black&Decker is a better machine.
I think Neuton battery-powered mowers are a reflection of the simplicity and ingenuity and there is no issues that they seem affordable.i think Neuton battery-powered mowers are the #1 selling battery-powered mowers on the planet. Our belief in the environmental benefits of Neuton is a strong one. We call it our Clean Air Initiative.
