I have a .3 acre lawn in Houston. I purchased my Neuton 6.2 mower in March of this year. It just "died" about 2 weeks ago. My experience with service has been very poor. Right now the mower is a plastic piece of junk in my garage.

Up to that point I would say it is light and quieter than gas but not as quiet as I expected. The mulching feature does not work well and robs a lot of battery power. I just barely had enough battery life on one charge to mow the lawn. My neighbors Black&Decker is a better machine.

I wonder about servicing. ASay after a year or two, or whenever, you need servicing, where do you take it and what does that cost (say the machine, for whatever mechanical reason, stops working). Are there options to get it fixed??

thanks.

I have had the small electric Neuton for several years and have had no trouble with it at all. About 3 years or whenever the C6 came out I right away purchased it. In tight places I still use the C5. I use them both to mow a rather large yard. The new one mows a larger path and it really helps save time.

Things worth noting...

(1) Get 2 batteries and you can just swap the battery if it runs out halfway through your football field.

(2) The largest Neuton mower (the CE 6) weighs 69 lbs with battery, which is 20+ lbs less than most modern equivalent-sized gas mowers -- you will have to push a lot less than you're thinking you would from your gas mower experiences.

(3) Electric mowers are ubiquitous in the UK and Europe. In fact, they've had electric hover mowers like those produced by Flymo since 1965.

(4) Do a search for "lawn mower" at Amazon.com (US) and sort by popularity. The top 20 mowers are electric. My point? Electric mowers are more popular on Amazon.com than gas mowers, and if you decide to buy one today you have lots of options.

That's all.

I own the 14" version. It worked great for my old house (.3 acres), especially when I bagged (it used a lot more battery for mulching). Light enough to use one hand to push, quiet enough to talk on the phone while mowing (seriously), it's a nice little machine. Where it sucks is when you move onto a .6 acre lot and you start paying Scotts to treat your lawn. I have more grass to mow, its thicker and it needs to be mowed more often. Need the bigger model.

Ah-ha! I knew they sounded too good to be true. No self propel = no purchase by me.

I had the black and decker mower and it is good for moderate sized flat lawn. If you have anything over .3 acres, electric is not ideal unless you don't mind stopping half way and recharge for 6 hours. As well, there is no self propel capability yet which makes electic mower less appealing.

The neuton has been around for at least 7 years, its ancient and barely updated just like the black & decker electric lawnmower

I think that battery mowers are the way forward. But reading your article gave me an idea for the best mower ever.

How about a Segway mower! How much fun would that be :-)
