On the future of the Moxi HD DVR – with a poll

management_ggudorfI had a long talk with Digeo’s CEO, Greg Gudorf, about the future of the Moxi HD DVR. It became clear to me right away that we saw the DVR differently. He, and presumably his company, views the Moxi HD DVR as an organic device which will grow and improve overtime. I however see it as a device that was brought to market before it was complete and feel early users are really beta testers that spent $800 for that privilege.

He brought up in our 45 minute conversation that there will be an update coming this summer that will address some of the usability concerns that annoyed the hell out of me in my review. No longer will you have to confirm twice that you want to watch a program on the guide. Other small issues will be addressed, but I’m hoping this update will pave way for more built-in apps including one for viewing online media.

Gudorf indicated that they are working on a true online media app instead of relying on the lackluster PlayOn DLNA service. He didn’t seem to agree when I mentioned that Hulu would be the TiVo-killing app. But maybe I’m wrong so I’m asking all of you.

Which online media service would you use the most on the Moxi HD DVR?

  • That’s funny. I found this page because I have a Google news alert set for “Hulu” and “Tivo”. I’m looking for anything that will help me watch Hulu on my TV set.

  • I’m guessing Gudorf has already approached Hulu and been denied. I can’t imagine he would be that out of touch. I think he’s just trying to save face.

  • Nice poll. Way to slant it so the results back your statement up. Why not just put up a poll “Which do you want more? a) DEATH b) PRISON RAPING c) LOSE A LIMB d) HULU

Seriously. Compare Hulu to maybe NBC ABC CBS or WB’s websites. Those have similar content. Do I want to stream some idiots with a camcorder to my DVR or professionally produced video. Maybe I’ll give you VEOH but the rest. Crap. And I’m pretty sure he was thinking other things like Place shifting built in would be Tivo killers not a plain old streaming channel.

  • I agree, Jim. I’d perfer the browser support all the networks’ website media players as I tend to go straight to them rather than Hulu.

Another deal breaker for me is the lack of a zoom picture that maintains aspect ratio. Only stretch is available and that won’t due when I watch TCM and Fox movie channel pillared letterbox movies quite a bit. The cable box that I want to get rid of does it. Unfortunately my pricey Samsung HDTV disables that zoom option on digital video inputs. I’m sure many HDTVs must be like mine. I need that zoom available from the tuner box.

  • If you had a 45 minute conversation why is this article only 200 or so words of info? Does he talk really slow?
