Uncle Walt brings it home with his Pre review

You’ll notice that our own Palm Pre review hasn’t run yet – long freaking story – but I enjoyed Uncle Walt Mossberg’s look at the Pre during which he basically confirms that there will be a new iPhone next week. He calls this the best competitor to the iPhone so far and that it also has a keyboard.

I consider the Pre to be potentially the strongest rival to the iPhone to date, provided it attracts lots of third-party apps, which it sorely lacks at launch. Its design is much better than that of the two other main iPhone-class competitors: the T-Mobile G1, which uses Android, and RIM’s touch-screen BlackBerry Storm.

  • This is the biggest piece of shit i have yet to see since the Blackberry.

GO APPLE! iPHONE RULES! (AND ALWAYS WILL)

  • Bill…

Normally I would feel sorry for someone as shallow as yourself. I would chalk it up to a disasterous childhood, or some other traumatic experience in ones life that would cause them to be emotionally insecure. However, in your case I fell you have chosen to be this immature troll who has an identity that is directly tied to what they own.

Hoping you carry an extra set of batteries,

    Becks

  • Wow Becks, you sure did take that personally.

I don’t think the Pre will necessarily be a piece of crap. I’m sure it’s a good phone and far better than most of the wannabes out there. BUT, I doubt it’ll be as good as an iPhone. Just like how no one can make a better MP3 player than the iPod, no one will top the iPhone.

  • Good luck getting a signal on sprint.

  • My my, how quickly we forget. Uncle Walt, can you please tell me how many apps the iPhone had when it was initially released? That’s right, it had zero. Do you remember when Steve Jobs said the SDK was AJax?

I love my iPhone, it’s a great device, but it’s not perfect, and it’s taken two years for Apple to finally deliver some of the features that can easily be found on cheap feature phones.

I hope Palm isn’t focused on building an iPhone killer, and instead focus on what Palm and Android are doing right. Both are building platforms for multiple device types to build on. Maybe the Pre won’t sell a million handsets this month, but it will lay the groundwork for the WebOS, hopefully other devices (with different form factors) will follow.

    • When the iPhone came on the playing field, no one had apps. Apple could get away with not having apps. But now with the app store out for about a year now that changes potential customer expectations. That’s the playing field Palm has to start on. They’re a bit empty handed as I see it. They could have knocked out at least a base hit if they came out with the SDK and aggressively courted developers and loaded up an app store equivalent with hundreds of great apps from the start (that would be Saturday). Frankly, to many, the app store is everything – not so much the handset.

actually, the iphone came with a robust number of apps built in and the fact of the matter is, this is 2009, not 2007. Apple has created everything the the Pre is trying to rip off…multitouch, apps, etc. etc. and the Pre is doing a sorely poor job of it.

Plus, lets see what the iPhone 3.0 hardware has to offer

      • I hate to agree, but you are actually technically right. This is 2009, not 2007. The Pre has a fairly 2007 feel to it. Hopefully it’ll be able to catch up quick though, and possibly do something that is innovative and/or new. Something that truly sets it aside from all the other devices.

For a company that is so far behind in so many things, Apple sure is quite far ahead in the game.

  • responding to just one comment here regarding the touch screen interface. Apple with its iPhone did not create the touch screen craze. Have you all forgotten the Samsung i300, i330, i500 and the 830w. those were all touch screen. starting way back in 2001. Apple stole the “i” and brought charm to the table. so don’t go getting all high and mighty that Apple did this and Apple did that, when all Apple did was see the trend and improve it, along with adding the Apple brand. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Mac guy at heart, but when it comes to phones, i am still not ready for a an Apple in my hand. Until a virtual keyboard really works, I’m gonna stick with my Samsung 830w and move into the Palm Pre this week end for a test drive

  • No tethering. You are dead to me sprint.

  • Well it’s here the Palm Pre. I checked it out at the sprint store, and found that it was a cheaply made unit with sharp edges around the key board – sharp enough to cause discomfort. Furthermore the fellow at the store in Long Beach, CA (thomas) was his name, told me that my contract was not expired, and that i wasn’t eligable to get the 199 deal, but that he could fix that. total lie, as if i need a hard sell to buy a phone. Also, when it came to answering questions regarding the phones ability to sync data, i.e., calander, contacts, etc. i have like 1500 contacts. if Sprint wants an iPhone killer they better make damn sure their people know how to answer basic questions. like can it sync with a Mac.

Oh, well i am free of my contract, since April, been just waiting to see what this phone was like and i don’t like what i see.

Hello iphone, and good by sprint.
