Don’t count AMD as being out. In response to the ever growing netbook/small laptop market, AMD and HP have recently announced an update to the HP dv2. We liked the original dv2 — however, adding a little more grunt to it with an improved processor can only be a good thing.
Using the Neo CPU, the updated HP Pavillion dv2 is expected to be available on June 10th, and will have pretty much the same feature set and price point as the original dv2. AMD has been struggling lately against Intel, so it’ll be interesting to see what’s coming up in the near future for the CPU manufacturer.

I’m just wondering if it will be worth it? Is there a real noticeable, worthwhile performance improvement and will it make a noticeable difference in battery life? Thats a pretty large selling point with Netbooks, the battery life. So I hope if performs around what the Atom performs, then it doesn’t make a real difference in battery life. or, if it does perform noticeably better than an Atom, will the battery life suffer much?
It should be interesting. I’m just not sure if it will be worth investing into. I like my amazing battery life and I’m alright with bottom line performance because it gets everything that I want done, done. I think thats how most owners and potential buyers feel, too?

Okay, so when I read this I was almost mad. I thought to myself, “wow self, there you go again…you jumped on something you thought was awesome just to have something even better surface in less than 2 weeks!!!”
Yeah, I just purchased the dv2 and got it earlier this week. (I must say, HP’s got their stuff together…I ordered it friday afternoon and got it Tuesday morning!)
I’m actually typing this comment on my newly purchased dv2. This machine is AWESOME.
So, I was a little bummed to read that the Neo will be offered in a dual-core in this exact model. However, I did some more digging and it looks like in order to keep the power consumption down and the price down…there will now be an integrated video card versus the dedicated video card.
To answer the above question – IMO the single core with a dedicated video card (that expands up to 2.3 gigs of RAM) would likely give you the same performance as a dual core with an integrated video card. Regardless of those 2 setups, the AMD processors have always out performed the Intel’s comparable systems. So I think either setup will give you a little more power. And the hardware benchtests have shown that this machine gets well above average battery life when compared to other notebooks.
I look forward to getting more information about the “new” dv2’s that are coming out. Please keep us posted!!!
From what I have read, it seems as if the Neo Dual Core will be equipped with the improved integrated ATI chipset in future models coming in the fall while HP will continue to product the dv2 with the dedicated card in it. I guess we will find out on Wednesday.
