Sims

I own a first-generation iPod Touch and a T-Mobile G1. While I love my G1 as a phone, I’m constantly amazed at the quality of applications and software that are available for the iPhone — games especially. While I seem to have sort of gotten my bases covered in the games department on the G1, I can’t help but wonder what it’d be like to walk around with games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Sim City, and The Sims 3 on my phone all day long.

Magic, I tell you. Magic!

That might be stretching it a little bit, but the fact remains: The Sims 3 represents yet another excellent and very-impressive iPhone game from EA. At $9.99, it’s a no-brainer for any fan of the Sims franchise.

Sims

The game is a slightly scaled-back version of the big-boy Sims games. In this adventure, you live in a small town surrounded by a handful of neighbors, a few employment opportunities, and a few shopping areas. If a full-blown PC version of The Sims equates to Sim City 3000 or Sim City 4, the iPhone version of The Sims 3 would dovetail with SimTown. Perhaps Sim Small Town, even.

You create your own character using a few different hairstyles, skin tones, and clothing and shoe options — nothing too advanced, there are perhaps 4-5 options for each category — and then decide on a basic personality type: Jack of All Trades, Nice Guy, Jerk, Sleaze, Power Seeker, and Maniac. After that, you assign yourself five main personality traits. I made myself a Jack of All Trades and chose good sense of humor, conversationalist, modest, friendly, and genius as my traits.

Sims

Then, in true Sims form, you set about making a little life for yourself. You’ll have to get a job to make money, you need to buy food items from the market, and you’ll have to keep an eye on your basic personal needs: hunger, energy, fun, social, hygiene, bladder, and the like. You can make extra money by completing tasks for various other Sims. Some are pretty weird; like this guy Bernie wants to pay me $30 (sorry, 30 simoleans — Sim currency) to annoy another Sim named Jack.

Sims

And one lady Sim offered me $90 to shove another lady Sim! Unfortunately (or fortunately) due to my personality type, my character doesn’t have it in him to annoy or shove people.

Since the iPhone’s got an accelerometer, we can’t escape mini-games based on shaking and tilting can we? No sir. If you want to cook yourself a meal, you’ll have to make sure to pick up and shake the pots on the stove or your food will burn. You can also go fishing, which consists of tilting the iPhone back and forth to get your line near a moving fish and then jerking the device upward to reel it in. Stuff like that. It’s sort of interesting the first time but it gets a little old after a while. Not a deal-breaker, though.

Sims

In order to stave off the monotony of everyday life, your Sim will develop long-term goals. Mine wants to hit the top of his career ladder eventually. He also wants a better TV, $1000 in the bank, and he wants to catch 15 fish — all things I can relate to in real life, except for the fish part. New goals will appear throughout the game and you can choose to add them to your long-term list. Otherwise, they’ll be goals for a while and then eventually fade away.

Sims

Again, you’ll get some weirdness here too. My Sim has had goals like “Annoy another Sim” or, worse yet, “Creep-out another Sim.” Hopefully my Sim doesn’t turn into a serial killer.

Sims

So there’s definitely enough going on to keep you engaged. Certain items unlock at various points in the game — new furniture, the ability to add on to your house, etc. — and there are just enough people to talk to and places to see to make it feel like a somewhat “big” game without making it unwieldy to play on the iPhone’s screen. The graphics, sound, and music are all done really well; just what you’d expect if you’ve purchased any of EA’s other recent games.

At $9.99, The Sims 3 already looks and feels more advanced than the first version of the game that came out for the PC back in 2000. If you’ve enjoyed playing subsequent Sims titles and you’re looking for a great way to pass some time, you can’t go wrong with this one.

The Sims 3 [iTunes App Store]

  • Question for you – when you install Sims 3 onto your iPhone does it give you a choice of languages? I ask because I live in Japan and can only download things from the Japanese iTunes store… they have Sims 3 (Japanese) and I’m hoping that I can still play in English.

    Thanks! Good review!

  • Looks pretty cool…I like the wish list feature.

  • Mariko, almost all the games and apps choose the language from the settings of your iPhone Language, so if you have English as your language then there will be no problem.

  • Humberto-

Thanks! I tested some other (free) apps that were Japanese and you’re right, because my phone settings are English the apps are too. I just wanted to be sure before I spent the 1,200yen on it.

Sims 3 for iPhone is currently downloading from the itunes store :oD

  • FCOL, when mobile app costs as much as 25% of the PC/console game it had better be good. This is not. I still dont grok the value of 5 minute to 30 minutes of half featured small screen entertainment for 10 bucks.
I want to be entertained……not wishing the whole time I was home playing this on my full screen full featured pc /console version.
Great for little kids. Not so for me. I’d rather do mindless Field runners than this half arsed version of a PC sim.

  • Great game but unless you are a real addict yo’ll get bored very quickly!

  • Hey guys,

Does anyone know how to Woohoo? I have tried everything. My sim has a “partner” and has even moved in, but there is no option on the bed or on the sims to Woohoo….. can anyone help me here?

    • When you talk to your partner, select ‘Romantic’ and it should be near the bottom (scroll down the options, there is more than what first appears on the screen!)

      • Hi Mariko,

I have already tried that. The only options under Romantic are Flirt, Pick Up Line, Tender Embrace, and Hot Smooch. Nothing else! Under Actions, only Break up and ask to move out/ask to move in. I have us maxed out under Partners too!

        • You have to have your sim relax on the bed and then click on the other sim under romantic and it will have woohoo then.

      • I forgot to mention that I have tried scrolling thru the Romantic section and those are the only 4 options my sim has.

        • First do hot smooch to get them in the mood ( to make the option appear) then scroll down in romantic and it will be there.

    • click on romance and scroll down to the very bottom and it should be there

    • make them think your romantic by using romantic options like hot smooch and tender embrace and it should work trust me i was confused at first to

    • None of the other responses I saw were accurate. The bed trick only works in the pc and mac versions of the game. The way to make your Sims WooHoo in the app version is this:

      1. When you are having a conversation with another Sim (with whom you are on good terms) click on “be romantic.”
      2. Do any combinations of the romantic options (hot smooch works best for my Sims.)
      3. At some point, near the bottom of the screen in the yellow bar it will say “so-and-so thinks your Sim is being romantic.”
      4. At that point go back to the “be romantic” tab, scroll down to the bottom and click Woohoo.

However, unfortunately the WooHoo action is not very exciting as in the app version does not show the woohoo and sims in the app version cant get pregnant :(

      Hope this helps!

  • Guys,
Can u tell me,how to start a relationship??..

  • I like this game and always have but mine always kicks me off it is at different times and places in the game the longeSt I have been able to play was probably 5 minutes and it gets really annoying. I just got my iPhone a week before the game was released so it’s not like my memory is full or anything. But does anyone elsew do this and what should I do?

  • I have a blackberry pearl and am having a hard time downloading Sims3. I am a true Sims addict. Anyone have any clue why I can’t download it?

  • Well hun I do believe this is an iphone only application. maybe thats why your blackberry is fighting it

  • can anyone tel me how to start a relationship in the game so far one of them is my bestfriend trying to go romantic but all i c is tender embrace flirt and pick up line.. wat do i do???

    • If you continue doing does “Romantic actions” eventually you will start budding a romance! Keep trying. If you touch in the bars that say the status of your relationship with a sim, you will see how is your development with that sim!! Try to start talking with any sim and then touch tha bar that says “Friend” “Best Friend” … whatever ;)

  • Does anyone have access to the Goals Checklist! I was really trying to discover and complete all of them to have access to the Pawn Shop (that is allways closed and will only open when you complete all 73 goals!) I already discovered and sompleted 72 goals!! But I can´t discover the last one!!! Is it possible that we can share here this list?

    • Do you find any solution to that 73 goal? I am not sure but i assumed that it is about gardening….just dont know how to triger that 73 goal too

    • ANYONE WHO HAS THE FULL GOAL CHECKLIST PLZ HELP US!

      • you’re probably missing the “buy a fishing kit” goal like i was…i say this because i think once you discover its the best way to make money, you’ll buy it straight away everytime you make a new profile. Hope that helps! P.S: does anyone know if theres any other way to gain repair skills other than having to repair stuff once it eventually breaks?

        • There is no Other way to get mecanical skill but I foun an easy way to get stuff to break, buy a stereo and turn it on and off and on and off and it will break every few times, then just fix it

      • I found it on http://www.theiphoneblog.com

        • I have all 72 goals complete and I am missing get “a job” to complete the full 73. I assume that the power seeker is the sim to make to acheive this so I created another one but the goal still wont pop up. It stays on my goal check list as ??? anybody know what to do? Thanks!

      • Hmm, now that I look, it says its for iPhone, so there is not cleaning related goals in this list. But since I only noticed two goals missing, just add them to the list:

        74. Achieve the highest cleaning skill level
        75. Gain a skill point at cleaning

PS: I’m not quite sure, because there are two goals missing on my game.

  • sorry first try hot smooch and tender embrace till they think u are romantic then try

  • try using hot smooch and tender embrace till your spouce thinks your romantic then go back to romance and scroll down and it should be there

  • How do you make a harvest? I’ve bought the seeds and fertilizer but I have no idea how to set it all up! Or even upgrade my house, like the options menu says

    • You just have to get enough goals done or either earn enough money then it notified u when you can upgrade your house I think you have to do two upgrades before you get a garden.

    • Sorry… It allows you to upgrade after your 5th day of play. The money nor goals do not matter here

  • I’m having trouble with the whole relationship thing. How long do you have to be romantic before they respond? I’ve tried for days and nothing!

    • You might be dealing with an ‘absent minded sim’ Jake’s partner… Maggie? is like that. I’ve found the best thing to do is to be romantic, like flirt, chat, flirt and so on. But I was to close to being best friends with her before I tried that tactic >_< so I went after Jake instead :P

  • I have a question, when your goal list is full and a goal expires how do you complete the goal that expired? does it show up again?? or am i SOL and cant complete the checklist?? i really want to open the pawn shop but i cant seem to do some of the goals on time… also how do i make another sim jealous of me???

    • Flirt with someones partner while they’re there

    • To make a Sim jealous do this.

Start a realtionship with any married woman.

Then Talk to his housband in front of her.

    • don’t worry, it will show up again. Eventually. Although unfortunately even goals you have completed will also show up so it is completely random when that particular one will pop up.
Best thing to do in my opinion is make another sim to complete other goals you don’t feel like completing in your current game. It all goes to the same place :D

  • I have only completed 47 goals and they keep repeating themselves. How do I discover more goals and is there a chest website telling you how to do this? X

    • You have to create different sims with different personalities! Each one has different personal goals and different wishes! It is very fun. You need to try to do different things! And to create crazy sims! Good luck*

  • hi my name is martin , and im form argentina and i wold like to know how to do ñiqui ñiqui because one object of my sim si to do 8 ñiquis ñiquis in one day so i dont know how to do it . also i need a girlfrien jeje.. how can i do to have one? plis answer back.. thanks!

    • I’m assuming you mean woohoo. Get romantic with a sim, make sure theyre into you. You’ll need to be in a budding romance before you get to kiss them, or else you’ll creep them out and scare them off. After you’re able to kiss them you’ll need to maintan the next level, dating i think it is, and you’ll be able to scroll down and access the woohoo action. If your partner doesn’t want to you’ll need the next relationship level. And if you’ve done it a couple times and they don’t want to, then you’ll need to make more partners. ;)

  • hey, i have three different files on my iphone and i wanted to delete one of them, but i wasnt sure how, does anyone know how to delete one or restart one?

  • How do you buy a stove and a bathtub please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How do you move in to your spouses house??

  • I have discovered and completed all the goals except “try fishing” which i found out from a list someone had put on the internet. Do I just keep playing until this goal shows up? Was wondering what other people’s lasts goals were. THANKYOU :)

  • Iv done 42 of the 73 goals and my mission now is to complete them all but iv noticed that the same goals tend to pop up more than once even when i have completed that goal, so i never move up to goal 43.can anyone help me?????

    • You’ve probably done all the goals your sim can do. Each sim has its own personality goals, for instance my manic sims goals were to watch 5 people sleeping, but if you make an average joe sim the goals are to master everything(besides gardening?) anyway you’ll need to make other sims with different personalities to fufill your goal list.

  • Does anyone know of/ could anyone write a full list of the 73 wishes to complete? I’ve done 72 it’s SO annoying!!! Great app btw. £6 well spent.

  • Hi, i’m Chloe and this is only my second time playing sims. I didnt even finish my sims castaway and its been about a year. So, you can guess i am quite new with Sims.. Anyhoo, i think theres something wrong with my sim. She cant sem to make this other guy fall in love with her though she has been sleeping over and bathing and eating all his food. Not to mention flirt like crazy. Funny thing is, all she had to do was flirt ONCE to make another WOMAN fall in love with her. So, my qs is how do you start a relationship with another sim and WooHoo with them?

    • Haha. Well, in my experience not all Sims are compatible with eachother!

Have you considered that the Sim man may be gay?

And just out of curiosity, did you intentionally flirt with the other woman? (I make all my Sims gay!)

  • Hey. I’ve been playing the app game for two or three days now (but the mac version for years) and was wondering if anyone knew how to unlock the pawn shop??

  • How do you stay clean, feed and well rested for three days? i can’t figure it out. Thanks lynn

  • How do you stay feed, rested and clean for three days,Also if you did a goal already do you have to do it again. It seems to lock the goal in it self when there are slots open.Is there a way to delete a goal that has been met already. I hate repeating goals.any help is appreciated. lynn

  • How do you unlock the pawn shop?

  • So just to make sure,to make another sim jealous do I have to start a realationship with a married sim,or can I just hit on them in front of thier spouse??plz let me know,p.s. I’m playin sims 3 for iPhone

  • But the Taliban needs to be decimated. ,

  • I have completed 70 out of 73 of the goals; have done each sim personalit. No joy figuring out the last 3 :-( help needed!!!!

  • TO SARA have u tried not getting a job to start with?or get fired from exsisting job & wait for it to pop up?if so not sure how to help u out, cause it was the first thing that poped up 4 me,let me know if u figure it out

  • Hey Melissa: I am going to try that and take your suggestion. I quit my job and will see if pops up. If you can tell me and if you remember what sim personality you created when that goal popped up for you? It’s driving me crazy because it’s the last one and I tried re-creating all the other personalities it different traits…etc. and still it stays in my goal check list as ??? The only way I know it’s missing is because I checked it against someone’s full list that they posted up. Thanks :)

    • Hey Sara,i think it was Jack of all trades, but it always seems to pop up no matter what sim I made except maniac, let me know if u figure it out

      • Finally It popped up to get a job!!!! It took forever. I had a jobless sim for like a week. I got my car and completed the game! Thanks again :)

        • Hey SARA!! I’m glad u finaly got it to pop up,just got a question? When u completed all goals did the pawn shop unlock? I haven’t completed all goals I think I got like 65 of them, but was wondering if completing all goals unlocked pawn shop, let me know when u get a chance

  • I was wondering if there is a cheat for app version to get money.

  • Are there any cheap codes for the sims 3 ipodtouch game.? It was fun for awhile but now its getting steel. It very limited.Any suggestions are appreiciated.Thanks. Lynn

    • Ashley/Lynn There are no cheats for the iphone version. The best way to make money is to keep catching fish and grow your own vegetables and than sell them at the grocery store by clicking the minus sign. Also you can try to get a permotion by asking your boss (when your talking to them, use the “actions” choice and “ask for a raise” should be there. If it’s getting repetative it’s may also be because you haven’t unlocked all the goals. Inorder to do this you have to create the different Sim personalities and there personal goals will appear. Hope this helps.

  • i was wondering if it was possible to start a romantic relationship and/or woohoo with your boss…

    • Yes, just keep chatting with them and making them laugh if they have a sense of humor. Then, when they are friends or best friends, start doing romantic things. When they are partners, you can woohoo them. Also, scroll down past romance, and you will see “actions.” One action is asking for a promotion! I have done this I think 3 times. Eventually your boss will quit giving you promotions. I am trying to become president but haven’t made it yet.
