It was inevitable and it sure took long enough, but Apple finally put some effort into support Exchange. Announced at WWDC, Exchange support is now built into Mail, iCal and Address Book in Snow Leopard. “You fill in your email address and password – and you’re set, across all 3 apps.”
Apple has implemented autodiscovery of Exchange servers for a seamless experience that business users will surely be thankful for. Spotlight searches Exchange data and you can QuickLook MS Office files right in emails – whether or not you have MS Office installed. Invitations now work in iCal and in Mail and scheduling meetings have never been easier – drag contacts into iCal and you’re ready to roll. Room availability has also been integrated and checks for meeting times in particular rooms and automatically reschedules if one are already in use.

I wonder if having the ability to set reminders for Birthdays and having recurring To Do list tasks (basic functionality that’s been missing for years now–so annoying!).
reminders for birthdays (and all other items on your calendar) exists now (and has for many years) in ical.
Simple, and needed. Looking forward to the needed integration.
That is the End of entourage i guess. Or why should i still buy that Software ?
As if the end of Entourage is a bad thing… Good riddance.
Meanwhile, Google Apps is on its way to destroying Exchange.
@Neighborhood Pre-Tard: you might want to quote your sources; qualified, and better yet, quantified ones count. Random pontification does not.
what about synch wuth tasks and notes? no mentions of it; this is a real bummer!
This is great news. Thank you Apple for adding this support!
Are they also beefing up Exchange support on the iPhone (like better GAL integration)?
Finally!!! Fuck!!!
This is so very overdue! Having moved to a Macbook from a PC 3 odd months ago, this is something I really missed and made my Mac feel clunky. However, more integration is required although this is a good start!
Not exactly as great as everyone thinks. It only supports Exchange 2007. For anyone else using exchange 2003, you are stuck with IMAP.
Just installed 10.6 to check out the support and found out that it will not work with our Exchange 2003 server. The options on the dropdown are POP, Exchange 2007, Exchange IMAP. When you try Exchange 2007 against a 2003 server, it will not connect.
Oh Well… Knew it could not be that good. And it also makes sense. Apple waited for Microsoft to build in that capability into 2007 so that they can tout it around as being their feature. Nice going Apple.
