Safari 4 final available today: Now ‘crash resistant’ à la Google Chrome

safari4

And what else did Apple unveil today, hmm? How about the final version of Safari 4! Yup, it should be available to download today at some point.

Apple’s touting Safari 4’s Javascript performance, something that shouldn’t surprise those of you running WebKit. Apple says it’s eight times faster than IE8’s Javascript engine, and also passes the Acid3 test at 100/100. IE8’s score? 21/100.

The biggest news, though, is that, like Google Chrome, Safari 4 now hands each plugin off to its own process. So if you’re watching a YouTube video and the Flash plugin crashes, only that tab will crash and not the whole browser. God that makes me happy.

That is all.

  • I spent all that time trying to get used to the tabs where they were, only to have them back on bottom in the final version. Disappointing.

  • I really love it when you use french expressions

  • @brad Cook: lol… same here

  • Crash proof? Yeah right I just installed safari 4 which has crashed completely 3 times within the last hour! Great work!!!

  • it has crashed 4 times for me since I installed it last night. The previous version didn’t crash at all. What is going on here?

  • I started using Safari few days back and I fall in love with this browser. It’s actually Firefox + social networking = Safari..

  • Oh it’s lovely and useful… for the 20 minutes it operates between crashes. I’ve sent more crash reports to Apple in the past couple days than the NHTA gets in a month.

  • Where is download safari with China? China is no connect for Apple in filter firewall. Police close dissident performance socket with youtube and google for safe enterprise on FireFox and Exploser. Help to find Safari download in secret socket if please care!

  • Seconded on the crashes every 20 minutes, and sending crash reports… I’m on relaunch #3 right now, and I’ve been on the web less than 1/2 an hour. Other than frequently crashing Safari 4 is great… But if it keeps crashing this much, I’ll probably dust off Firefox and call it a day.

  • Oh It just crashes at every moment it can…this is so full of wholes the Swiss may think its cheese. This is a real issue and problem…very – unapple

  • Did no-one actually watch the bloody keynote. This feature is coming out in snow leopard, not leopard or windows you guys will just have to wait. Safari used to really good and reliable, but now its just as unreliable as vista

  • yeah thenn why does my browser crash at least every 15 minutes now? : /

  • From the Snow Leopard section of Apple’s website:

With Snow Leopard, Safari 4 delivers up to 50 percent faster JavaScript performance thanks to its 64-bit support.6 In addition, Safari is even more resistant to crashes. It turns out that the number one cause of crashes in Mac OS X is browser plug-ins. So Apple engineers redesigned Safari to make plug-ins run separately. If a plug-in crashes on a web page, Safari will keep running

  • I have Safari 4 on two computers each with different OS’s. My desktop is running XP Pro and my laptop is Vista Home Pro.

Safari 4 must not like Vista very much because it crashes constantly to the point of becoming a pain in the butt. My desktop on the other hand does not crash nearly as often but does crash none the less.

All that having been said I will try Google Chrome after deleting Safari 4 from both puta’s as soon as I am done with this message. If GC becomes a disappointment I’ll give it all back to Firefox which I have used in the past but found somewhat of a letdown. But it does not crash regularly like Safari 4 and is not nearly as close to the dump as IE8.

  • I loaded the newest safari onto my imac at home and at work, and on my laptop… OSX latest version.
The browser will not load and crashes upon startup routine.

Frustrating. I have to use firefox until I figure out a fix.
    Help.

  • Jose,
Sorry to hear about your problem. Too bad you went all the way on all your puta’s. Contrary to my last post didn’t go Chrome I kept Safari 4. But I did change my Antivirus software on both machines and now S4 seems to be behaving itself. If you can maybe you might want to try the same thing (Just a thought) on one of your puta’s. You could try a free version like AVG and see what happens. Often times problems are a simple software conflict and not all that uncommon with antivirus software. Just trying to help……Good luck.

  • Safari 4.02 is crashing like crazy.
    3.x had no issues…

  • Safari never used to crash. Then with each update is became less and less reliable. It would crash when I opened a new tab. It would crash in youtube. This newest version seems to crash for no reason at all.

I thought it was because my Mac OS vs 10.4.11 but it looks like it is happening to a lot of people.
