Sorry, AT&T, but you can’t hide tethering from the very folks who taught you, long ago, what it meant to truly tether. First, download this carrier update and then type this into Terminal.
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
Finally, start up iTunes and option-click the Restore button and select the ipcc file in the disk image. Once the update is complete you’ll see Internet Tethering under your network settings. Easy peasy.
UPDATE – Just go here with your iPhone browser. This enables tethering and if you reboot you can get MMS. MMS is still wonky on AT&T, though.

That was so easy I almost feel bad doing it.
No, really I don’t. :D
This is awesome! I guess “late summer” or whatever BS is not accurate…
just wait until your next bill. If you got $10,000 charges because of tethering. Then, you might regretted reading this article from TechCrunch. :)
Actually I used it in california for a month already and they charged me the same amount they do for every month
They can’t charge you extra if you have an unlimited data plan.
How can they legally charge you anymore for tethering, and how could they ever charge you 10,000 grand? I have not found one person who has had a problem with since enabling tethering.
My gmail account got hacked, and by the ‘Activity Log’ feature of Google, I could figure out the IP address from where my email account was logged in.
The IP was 204.15.23.171
I do not know how to figure out which browser is this. Is there any software that can figure out whose machine is this where my account was opened and emails were tampered?
Are you sure? Apparently that IP address belongs to Facebook.

No, it was a hacker. What are your account name and passwords for google and facebook? We will get to the bottom of this.
How many times did your mom drop you on your head, Schmidt?
You shouldn’t fell bad about tethering, but you should feel stupid for following advice from biggs.
im having trouble everytime i type what im supposed to into my pc terminal it says it doesnt recognize it internally or externally. am i doing something wrong?
Does anyone know how to remove this?
Well now I’m in a dilemma. See, for a long time my friends with WinMo phones were bragging about cut and paste, tethering, mms, etc. All the things their 4 year old cheap phones could do that my $500 new phone couldn’t.
So just like every other iPhone owner, I lied and said I couldn’t care less about c-n-p and mms. I said I’ll never need it so my phone is still cooler.
So now, I either have to admit I DO want tethering after years of saying I DIDN’T…..or I simply keep it a secret.
I’ll really be stuck when we can send MMS. I’ve always said ‘no big deal, I just send it by email, and I don’t care about the pain in the ass of incoming MMS, I don’t care to see what’s making everyone else laugh’…so the first time I send one they will be all over me.
Damn it.
The only thing left to complete iPhone is going to Verizon. I don’t really care that they will most likely cripple the coolest features of the phone. I’ll just go buy a Nuvi GPS and whatever else I have to, to make up the lost features. I just want to get away from AT&T, those money hungry bastards.
Should have just jailbroken your iPhone first of all. Show them you have a device that can do everything theirs does better.
However, the iPhone will not go to Verizon. Verizon is locking down app stores in device to cash in on their own apps instead. Apple will not do business with someone who is going to undercut the App Store and iTunes profits. On top of that there is the extra R&D and work in manufacturing a CDMA variant. LTE is too far off for Apple to support it anytime too soon.
AT&T not only will let them cash in big on the App Store but they are probably cutting a big check to maintain exclusivity.
Can this hack work to get MMS working??
Is there one of these for O2 customers in the UK? Cuz that would be awesome…
yes there is same site
this is awesome ..wow
This only works for Mac computers. How about similar option for a PC.
Thanks
Just use the mobile browser, much easier.
Edward – get a Mac! haha.
http://www.krillr.com/blog/3DPQHBZ3/i-have-tethering-and-mms-on-my-iphone-and-yes-im-on-att
That link is for tethering and MMS on both Mac and PC
Works Great! I also see MMS settings now under network, now if we could only enable MMS under messaging we would be all set. :)
u can enable ur MMS settings… just do this….
-take sim out of iphone
-place into old ATT phone w/ MMS capabilities
-make a call or send a message
-check ATT site and see if phone changed
-go to att.mymedia.net (google it)
-with sim still in decoy phone register number on the website
-enter 4 digit passcode in decoy phone
-take sim out and put back into iphone
VIOLA~~~~~~~
Does this work with 2G iPhones as well?
do you have to jailbreak your iphone to do this?
Nope, not even a little. Just have to be on a Mac.
Worked perfectly. From first click to surf took 2 minutes.
you don’t even need a mac just click on where it says here while using your iphone and it will take you there. or just go to: help.benm.at/help.php and try from there however if you have a classic iphoe this will not work. sorry
Looks like it needs Leopard.
Installed it great. Very easy to do. this is awesome! Thanks.
Is that all one command line? I don’t see where I select that file either when I hit restore.
Can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks!
On Mac to be more clear….
-Close iTunes
-Download DMG, double-click, get IPCC on your desktop
-Open Terminal, Type that command (one line) and hit Enter
-Open iTunes (with phone plugged in)
-Let is sync or whatever and click on your phone
-Hold “option”, left click on “Restore button” and find your ipcc file on the desktop and hit ok…
Thanks Ken-
That was way too easy!
i didnt even close itunes it still worked.. but does it charge
Too bad restoring doesn’t get rid of that setting/profile
This may help:
http://www.blogsdna.com/3610/how-to-enable-mms-3g-tethering-on-iphone-os-30-gm-build-7a341.htm
So what exactly does this terminal command do? Do I need to do the same command with FALSE to revert something back? Am I going to have problems with iTunes in the future??
No. We’d have told you if it was going to harm you later.
Breaking it down:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
“Defaults” is the command line interface used to access/modify settings files.
“Write” indicates that you’re going to be writing to the file.
“com.apple.itunes” is the settings file.
“carrier-testing” is the key that you’re changing. It enables you to “test” carrier files (or, in this case, upload modified ones.)
“-bool” indicates that the setting you’re changing is a boolean value (meaning it should be set to TRUE or FALSE).
“TRUE” is the value of the setting.
In short, this just opens the iTunes configuration file (com.apple.itunes), and turns the “carrier-testing” option on.
Can anyone verify if this works on the original iPhone?
Most of the things I’ve read said that you cannot use tethering on EDGE. I don’t think it will work.
And about others carriers? Will it works?
Well it definately worked. However I’m upgrading to a 3gs on Friday, is syncing now with this new carrier file going to hork up the new phone do you think? I kinda ran right thru doing this before I put any real thought behind it. hehe
uh, what?
What do you mean by terminal?
“type this into Terminal.
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE”
Its like a ‘command center’ for your Mac. Well I mean its an application, and it will look like a big black box with a
>_
in it as it’s picture.
Best of luck.
bahaahaha
If you laughing about the question, that’s dumb. Terminal is in no way an application an average person should should be able to access or use. I think its amazing they load it with the OS and its not a download. Legit damage could done in the hands of an average folk.
Wow… That was scary easy!
I hope this stays for good!
BTW: I’m posting this over my tethered network connection!!!
Worked like a charm but now I don’t have visual voicemail. Any suggestions?
Visual Voicemail gets broken when you have a crappy .ipcc file… There are better ones out there. You can also try to tweek the .ipcc file to fix Visual Voicemail. I have a working .ipcc file that I will post on my blog later.
Me too. Tethering worked over EDGE. It was slow but it worked. Not worth it though if I lose visual voicemail. I guess I’ll be doing a restore of my iphone now.
Yep, the tethering worked like a charm but broke Visual Voicemail. Restoring to the pre-tethering profile fixed the voicemail.
Does this work for PC also?
For Windows use this
http://rapidshare.com/files/245789767/ATT_US.ipcc.html
Can get to the file using shift+restore? Only gives an option for file type .ipsw What should we do with that ipcc file?
I can neither confirm nor deny that on Windows you need iTunes 8.2.0.10, which is also known as Beta 4, to update .ipcc files. The final version (8.2.0.23) or a later beta (8.2.0.13) for example, only allow .ipsw files to be updated.
In the Windows command prompt:
“C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
Then launch iTunes w/ iPhone docked.
Then Shift+”Check for Update” to load ipcc files.
when I type that it say cannot find C:\program.. any idea how to fix that?
Got VV back by doing an Option-Restore and navigating to the tethering file but now I don’t have tethering anymore. Seems like you’ll have to pick and choose which is more important to you. Eh….you get what you pay for. LOL
Okay, I want to restore to my pre-tethering status. Is that what you did? Option-Restore and navigating to the tethering file? The same tethering file we just used to get tethering??
The file is a little too agressive with the settings changes. If you want VV to work, apply the file, then go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Celluar Data Network and for the Visual Voicemail APN replace what’s in there with acds.voicemail
That should take care of it. Now I haven’t had a chance to test tethering since I made that change, but voicemail is now working again.
After applying the file directly from the benm.at site I don’t have a Settings -> General -> Network -> Celluar Data Network option anymore. Any thoughts?
same here. I don’t seem to have the Cellular Data Network option under settings. Any thoughts?
Ditto. On the original iPhone with Visual Voicemail bricked after applying the ben.at mobileconfigs.
I did the up grade – add the ipcc file on a mac and can now use tethering on both a mac and PC – visual voicemail is broken on mine
This brought Visual voicemail back but I completely lose tethering ??? Guess VV is more important.
I had the same problem. Visual Voicemail was gone. But I restarted the phone and went back into it a couple of times and now its working???
“Wow… That was scary easy!
I hope this stays for good!
BTW: I’m posting this over my tethered network connection!!!”
…hope you don’t plan on checking your visual voicemail anytime soon. LOL
Why’s that? I enabled tethering and I can still check my visual voicemail just fine.
I can has Japanese version please?
Softbank version on my blog
http://w00kie.com/2009/06/18/activate-tethering-on-softbank-iphone/
Huh seems to be a no go on my original iphone.
Can someone post the steps on how to do it on a pc…
I agree….is there any chance to do it on Ipod-touch too 2g…??
Well, I would have to guess no, because your iPod Touch doesn’t interact with any cellular network, it can’t utilize said network to make a connection to your computer.
I did the up grade – add the ipcc file on a mac and can now use tethering on both a mac and PC – visual voicemail is the folks names that called – right it is not broken on mine
Well the command line was not necessary for me. I did all the other steps minus that and it works like a charm. What exactly does the command line do?
Can anyone explain how to do this for a PC and first version of iphone?
@Jack
i believe the iPhone 2G doesn’t support tethering at all. and tethering on EDGE wouldn’t be worth the effort anyways.
Any word on data usage rates for this? I am worried that I will get a per-byte charge on my bill next month. Are MMS covered under unlimited text plan?
AT&T told me that the data rate for tethering is $.01/kilobyte which works out to $10.00/megabyte. Some people are going to be very surprised when they get their next bill…
Has anyone found a fix to keep VV and tethering?
VV isnt that important to me but it would be nice to have.
Check my last post a few responces up. And let me know if tethering still works as I can’t test it for a few hours.
Yep, that worked. I have it back up and running. Thanks!
After the Bluetooth firmware update, Bluetooth tethering works for me as well.
Just installed it… will try tethering at home! Thanks!
Since tethering is (Presumably) going to be an extra charge service, does anyone know if using tethering this way “announces” to AT&T that you’re using it? If so, they could sock a charge since this breaks the TOS. If it’s anonymous, then it’s just too bad for them.
people have been tethering via jailbroken apps for at least a year now. no additional charges (not to say it couldn’t happen now, but…)
True, but NetShare and friends are transparent to the iPhone’s networking layer. But tethering is an Apple supported feature, so I was wondering if the iPhone sends out a message that tethering is being used. Seems like there must be *someway* to control it’s use. But, maybe not…
AT&T told me that tethering is not included in the unlimited data plan, they do keep track of it, and they charge $.01/KB which is $10/MB.
I noticed that my Text/Data traffic lists this now as “wap.cingular”. I initially got scarred but then I looked back into my history and noticed that it occurs for all data charges (even last week before I even had 3.0). There’s no way to tell for sure, but it doesn’t appear to be obvious that you are tethering. Obviously if you download 5GB in an afternoon, it will be apparent…
I don’t care how slow 2G/EDGE tethering is I would still like the option if somebody figures it out.
Hey you CAN tether with the 2G and Edge network isn’t crippling, just a tad pokey.
I’m using an app called PDANet…read all about the lifehacker writeup here:
http://lifehacker.com/5086490/the-best-way-to-tether-your-iphone-to-your-laptop-for-free
I’m not sure this is the most capable solution out there? I’m interested in getting Terminal and installing this update…save the $30 that the full version of PDANet costs (trial version only allows http surfing).
Anyone know how to enable MMS from the help.BenM.at site? I have the tethering option but now my Settings -> General -> Network -> Celluar Data Network doesn’t exist.
Same question here — getting tethering working with AT&T was a snap on that site, but I don’t see any place to enter my MMS settings. Anyone find success with MMS?
I got MMS working. Steps:
– log in to your ATT profile and change the phone to something that has MMS
– go to att.mymedia.net and register your phone
– install the IPCC file to your iPhone (”Option+Restore”)
– enter MMS settings on the iPhone in Settings->General->Network
– restart the phone
overall it took about 10 minutes, because I also tried putting the sim card into another phone, but I am not sure it has anything to do with the result. And I rebooted the phone 3 or 4 times
Check this http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig/ here can you set also a custom carrier!
Thank you for providing the best geek-out moment of my day.
How does this enable MMS? i rebooted and i dont have any mms setting under messages?
I am not sure either. MMS will not work for me. Also not sure where to input MMS settings that were listed on the site.
I’ve searched and can’t find the MMS settings either. Can anyone help?
I have the same issue!
I dont think it works with the latest itunes version, it doesn’t let me ’select’ the ipcc file to restore.. anyone having this issue? just in case you are wandering, Im on a mac…
Wow…I hope this lasts, AT@T is gonna be pissed
If I want to revert, do I simply remove the profile that was added under the general settings pane?
I reverted by hooking up my iPhone, going to iTunes, option-clicking on restore, and selecting the .ipcc file thats in your home dir ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/ folder.
I also sync’ed once after that for good measure. Back to my old self now. :)
Or not…hrm. I assumed it worked because my visual vm started working again, but now that I go into iPhone settings general networking, I still see tethering as an option there. Interesting….
Okay, weirder still. Since it was still showing tethering, I turned my airport card off on this computer (had set up tethering on my laptop last night), turned on tethering, my imac saw it and created the interface for it, but suddenly it said that interface was unplugged. I looked over at my iphone that was still in network settings, and _now_ the tethering option is gone. Bizarre no?
if you just delete the profile (via the “remove” button), and then try to use tethering it will go away. no need to restore.
lifesaver. i couldnt find out how to remove the profile until i read your post
Still can’t figure out how to remove the profile. Can’t seem to find the original profile file on the computer and don’t see a “remove” in the iPhone settings. What am I missing here?
Much appreciated! Thanks!
Yeah my iPhone by putting in these numbers all day settings has dissapeared and my voicemail works then doesn’t work. I’m just gonna do a full restore since it’s my only phone and wait like everyone else for when ATT gets it’s ass in gear and lets us have MMS and Tethering.
Where is the original .ipcc file on Windows live? I fixed iTunes so I can grab .ipcc now, but a search turns up nothing (prob not doing it right).
I used the update site (benm.at) but I still can’t set tethering. It just tells me to contact AT&T to enable tethering on my account. Has anybody made that work for them?
I received that message the first time, but then tried it again and it worked.
Same here and I tried it again!
Never mind, magically changed and started working
Worked perfectly!
After installing this and rebooting my iPhone, I’m stuck at the apple logo. Can’t even turn it off!! HELP!
This is very cool, and pretty speedy. My VV doesn’t seem to be messed up at all.
I didn’t do a reboot – so not worried about MMS, but the internet via usb is pretty fast. I’ll just try to use it only as necessary – paranoia that I might get ‘caught’ with data usage.
It’s like a power company finding pot farms based on high electrical usage. ;-)
Can’t wait to see if you guys can get a response from AT&T.
This does not work. I cannot get USB or Bluetooth to work. The Tethering option is definately there in my setting under Network, but it will not connect either way. What am I not doing right?
AT&T blocks tethering by account using MAC address filtering.
Unless tethering is enabled in your account it won’t work.
Installing an application that provides the facilities for it on your hardware won’t enable the tethering capability in your account.
Yes… Precisely… Please tell AT&T to ignore this because of that…
Tethering is definitely working for me on AT&T. No tethering on my account. What I am thinking is that they have different settings for different locations in the country.
Completely wrong. It’s not only working on my phone, but all of my friends phones that I have helped set up today.
If you are going to spew nonsense, please do it somewhere else.
I am wondering if Maj is correct! I followed the procedures exactly as has been described and even watched the YouTube video. Everything downloaded and installed easily and without error. I started the iPhone, I reset my network setting (which restarted the iPhone again) just to make sure VV worked, and turned Tethering on in the network settings. I selected USB only. It said tethering was on but I never got the little “Tethering” message on the top comment line. I tried connecting to Mac but it did not pick up on any new network because Tethering was not working. I am US and ATT! Not sure why it is not working but I tried reinstalling several times and restarting my iPhone multiple times as well. So something is blocking Tethering!
Got it up and running on both USB and Bluetooth. No known issues yet. VV is working fine. How do we get rid of it if we want to, down the line?
I’ve got the same issue.. tethering option on my phone is there but my computer seems to ignore it. both via USB and BT.. acts like its just a regular phone.
I have it working but it seems to have disabled the sound on my laptop. I can not turn sound on. Any ideas?
Viola!
..?
