Hey you CAN tether with the 2G and Edge network isn’t crippling, just a tad pokey.

I’m using an app called PDANet…read all about the lifehacker writeup here:

I’m not sure this is the most capable solution out there? I’m interested in getting Terminal and installing this update…save the $30 that the full version of PDANet costs (trial version only allows http surfing).

How can they legally charge you anymore for tethering, and how could they ever charge you 10,000 grand? I have not found one person who has had a problem with since enabling tethering.

this is most definitely not working for me. i went through and followed all the instructions. i am running v3.1 (7C144) on an iphone 3g (not 3gs).
no luck for me. i hope this didn’t mess up my phone otherwise. so far it seems okay.

i closed itunes. i d’loaded the dmg and opened it. found the ipcc on the desktop. opened terminal and typed in the line did the option restore found the ipcc….all that. synched the phone. rebooted it. i’m just not seeing tethering as an option in the general settings. if anyone else has an idea of what i’m doing wrong. let me know. thnx

This ‘hack’ will no longer work if you have upgraded to 3.1. AT&T is doing everything wrong! I wonder how do they stay in business. C’mon AT&T, get in line with the rest of the carriers!

Anyone tried this on a 3.0 3GS yet? I tried the benq fix but to no avail, but if anyone here has tried the example above and had success on a 3GS then I will try this next.

had an update last week from at&t they started mms lost my theater, tried to reinstall three times no good, visual voice mail went south the same time had to remove theater t get it back. anyone having the same problem worked great for awhile 4 months or so but they seem to have gotton to be on the last upgrade. I don’t think you have refused not sure

Another note:

If you tethering stops working just repeat step 1. If that doesn’t work, repeat step 1 and choose Cingular instead of AT&T.

After searching all over and trying everything, I finally found a solution by combining info from different sources.

To get visual voicemail back after enabling tethering and also KEEP tethering working, follow these steps.

1. Go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz on your iphone and choose “Custom APN”, check yes for “V3 Tethering + MMS”, and choose “US – AT&T” from the carrier menu. This will download and install a verified profile.

2. Enable tethering and connect your phone to your mac (haven’t tested this on a PC) and make sure it’s working. Open itunes and option-click “Restore”. Navigate to your home folder and then: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support.
Choose the “ATT_US.ipcc” and let it update your carrier settings.

Done. This should bring back visual voicemail and keep tethering. It’s working for me so far anyway.

I don’t understand how to do this part. my computer says “there is no default application specified to ope the document” any ideas what to do?

And what is a terminal? where do I find it!

Help please, I need to be able to get internet on my computer!!

Got it to work, but now ferquently I loose the net connection when stopping tetehring and disconnecting iphone. All net app (main and safari) on the phone than just hang. Rebooting the phone usually helps, but not always.

Anybody has any clue or help on this ?

Umm, i need a little help, i got iphone 3gS.
and likee, i cant even send pic texts, nor videos like the apple.com shows you, when they introduce iphone 3gS. also, i’m kinda lost on downloading this file thing. where it says “click to download from this carrier..” i click an it says file not found, etc. it only lets me saves it, and to find it in the internet,
any help? anyone… i would apreciate it.

Yep, the tethering worked like a charm but broke Visual Voicemail. Restoring to the pre-tethering profile fixed the voicemail.
