I heard (on the internet so take with a grain of salt) that major insurance companies are big behind these laws, not because of safety, or dangers, but because then they have an excuse NOT to pay in the event of an accident.

The firs thing they do is subpoena your cell phone record, if you were on a call, then they don't pay. I guess if they see you have a GPS device, then you would have to prove that your were NOT pushing buttons at the time. This isn't a court of law and you are guilty unless you can prove otherwise.

The bill is just another money-maker for the state. Just like seatbelts and just like cellphones. NJ is broke and the doofus in charge is only making it worse (he's out of there soon, any way).

One more choice the state wants to make for you. Funny, the states taxes the sale of GPS units and will now 'tax' drivers for using them. Next, it will be the in-dash units, then the radio.

I agree fully with this but there shouldn't *have* to be a law against it for the same reason there shouldn't have to be a law against jumping off a bridge.

I've been a long time user of GPS devices and I have found that using a cell phone with GPS on it that is not affixed to the windshield in front of you can be very dangerous.
