EZGrill: The $5 single-use grill

I live on the top floor of a third-floor walkup with no balcony in the middle of Boston. That doesn’t mean I don’t like grilling, though. Granted, I can’t really grill nor do I have any use for a grill, but maybe someday I’ll want to grill somewhere else. What? Now I have to buy a grill? What the hell do I need a grill for if I’m only going to use it once or twice a year?

Luckily, for $5 I can now buy a single-use grill pre-filled with charcoal. Deal — that’s exactly what I need. Too bad I can’t buy this EZGrill, as it’s called, in any nearby stores yet. They’re only available at Winn-Dixie stores at the moment, although online ordering is apparently coming soon. What? Now I have to plan ahead for my impromptu grilling session? Oh well, better than not grilling at all.

And lest you think the concept of a disposable grill is wasteful, the company claims that its product is environmentally-friendly: made from 100% charcoal and housed inside a container made of recyclable aluminum. That’s far more environmentally-friendly than me buying an actual grill, using it three times, and then throwing it out whenever I move next.

  • These are pretty much the standard Grills in England, everyone uses them.

  • we have had these for at least 10 years in the uk, you can get them for £1 too, for $5 you are being had.

  • haha funny that this is something new in the us!

  • Most of the decent one in the UK go for 2.99 which is almost exactly $5. i think they are great and having been using them for years at home as well on trips.

  • So why not just buy a cheap aluminum tray ($1.99 a pair) for the turkey sized ones, a bag of charcoal (easy 5 or 6 uses) and a cheap cooling rack?

Then you can make one of these whenever you want to.

I bet I could make at least 2, maybe three for 5 bucks. Less if I reuse the cooling rack.

  • Move along folks, nothing to see here. I’ve used these before here in the good old US as well.

FYI – Don’t use it around an apartment. Been there, done that. When that paper starts to burn up it flakes and floats around, a slight breeze and it’s heading for the building, balcony, open windows below you… not good. Scared the hell out of me until the paper was gone then I cooked up some tasty burgers over charcoal…..mmmmmmm, Beats gas every time.

  • I could have sworn I’ve seen these around at Stop & Shop grocery stores. I’ve definitely seen something like this in a walk-in store around here in New England.

  • “This is a great idea as I hate using the park’s grills. I love the fact that we are saving some trees and it doesn’t cost me a fortune! I have used them before and I haven’t had any of the problems these other people mentioned. Did some great steaks on them from the receipes!”

  • HAHAHA, “only availaible at Winn Dixie stores”. That’s funny, I bought one of these at King Kullen last week. They’re pretty good and last for about 45 minutes however, they do leave an odd chemical taste on the food, i think that’s due more to the paper accelerant than anything else though.
