In case you didn’t know, Apple refreshed its notebook lineup a few weeks back and rebadged the 13-inch unibody Macbook as a Pro model. Apparently the masses like it as that model now occupies the top spot in Amazons best selling laptop computer list and number four overall. It wasn’t that long ago that netbooks ruled that second list and the white 13-inch Macbook was the top selling Apple computer at number 14.

But as Fortune’s Apple 2.0 blog points out, netbooks are returned nearly 30% of the time and most people don’t understand the difference between a netbook and a notebook. Maybe Apple actually knew what it was doing by not jumping on the underpowered, small screen notebook bandwagon. Anyone else glad that this fad is finally winding down?

  • LOL. I saw one of these today and really liked the new version. I’m typing this on a Macbook Pro 15 inch since I wanted the gaming graphics, but if they made a 13 inch Macbook Pro with faster graphics as an option I’d have jumped at it.

  • wow, you guys really do your research don’t you. Amazon has seperated Netbooks into a separate category.

check this out for accurate list:

  • Netbook is not powerful for notebook users. It can only go Internet and process other simple works. Most of people buying this netbook would use it in classroom for notes or read news while travel. The netbook is a kind of enhanced PDA. That’s it.

  • Netbooks perform two limited functions.

    1. They are more portable than normal laptops and have longer lasting batteries. You would use them in situations where your laptop would be too heavier an option or when a power source was not available for a long period of time.

    2. Some netbooks are cheap and are specifically aimed at the education and third world country sectors. They bring the poor into the world of computers.

While laptops become more netbook-like by becoming thinner, more power-efficient and lighter, they will not dethrone the netbook until they can compete in the above areas.

  • PS. Apple is #8 and #25 on the computer bestselling Amazon list. Netbooks still rule the roost.

  • A netbook, particularly the linux based SSD based units are very compact, rugged, efficient and cheap. What’s more, despite the FUD they are capable of 90% of most everyday computer tasks. When I’m doing video editing or transcoding, or heavy numeric processing I use a desktop. For most other needs I can use a netbook. They are perfectly good for surfing the web, writing text or proposals, email, ebook reading and video and audio playback.

But the crucial point is that it is cheap, my EEE 900A ran me $169 on clearance, 1/7 th the cost of an Macbook Pro 13″. It’s nearly indestructable but if it is lost or stolen I’m out $169. As a result I carry my EEE everywhere, I loan my old EEE to friends. It’s a classic case of the “good enough” being the enemy of the perfect.
