CrunchGear, at the movies! Peter’s been talking pretty much non-stop about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for the past few days, and it brings me great joy to say that, despite the horrendous reviews—this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read—it’s well on its way to becoming the worst reviewed $400 million movie ever. The movie has been in theaters for five days now and it’s already halfway to the $400 million mark.
Now, I haven’t seen the movie (despite the fact that we were all invited to see an early screening of it; something came up), but I did listen to Paul O’s review on the Ron and Fez show last week, and it’s safe to say that he didn’t like the movie. Nearly no critics liked it, as a quick trip to Rotten Tomatoes reveals. Yup, a 21 percent rating. Terrible, right?
It seems that, according to Rob Moore, who’s a vice-chairman of Paramount, all those fancy-pants reviewers “forget what the goal of the movie was. The goal of the movie is to entertain and have fun.” (Isn’t that the goal of every movie, though? Name me one movie that’s been well-received but that wasn’t “entertaining.” All good movies “entertain” on some level.)
Even more telling, according to Paramount’s exit polls—movie studios have exit polls?!—is that 91 percent of movie-goers thought the film was as good, if not better, than the first.
In other words, movie critics have no idea what they’re talking about vis-à-vis the average guy, which is sorta like us here at CG. Our reviews are mainly written for the tach-savvy crowd, and we look at things through that tech-savvy prism. While we may pan an item, like the BlackBerry Storm, the average guy thinks it’s the coolest thing ever.

It’s not too tough to be better than the first Transformers movie.
I really don’t understand how anyone who saw the first one could be excited to see this one.
Because the first movie was rad as hell.
So if the second is to be better than the first, logic posits that the second will be radder as hell.
I had a blast. Seriously it goes back to my whole argument…
I didn’t go for a good script.
I didn’t go for good acting.
I went to see robots killing other robots.
Therefore… I was extremely entertained and had a freakin’ blast.
I’m going to see it this week and I agree with Steve. I thought the first movie sucked, but it had Autobots fighting Decepticons. And Megan Fox. What more do you need?
completely agree, im not going to see it for acting abilities and plot. Im going to see it for one reason robot fight scenes. Same reason why i see every statham movie not for pure entertainment.
Sometimes bad acting even makes it better.
Here Here!
The fight sequences, I felt, were incredibly improved over the first movie.
I got lost sometimes in the first movie when close combat fight scenes would just turn into one giant blob of shiny metal.
I thought they did a really good job on the second movie with choosing better angles and clearer sequences.
I thought it was AWESOME! I liked the first transformers. I don’t know why everybody is upset? It had awesome special effects, decent acting and a decent story line.
I am not a transformers nut. I didn’t follow the cartoon from the 80’s or whenever it was. I played with the toys as a kid and thought this movie and the 1st were great!
The movie is totally AWESOME! It’s what every guys want, ROBOTS fighting violently and hot girl!
Would be hard to top this movie for the summer/year. Enjoyed every moment of the flick, just plain awesome movie. 6 thumbs up
I agree with everyone else, this isn’t a movie that you go into hoping for a great script and tender moments that will make you cry. You are going to see great special effects, a hot chick and some pre-pubicent humor.
Go see Benjamin Button if you want depth.
This movie is perfect for fun. And its special effects are very impressive. I don’t care what someone else said about it, I believe it is a good movie in a depression environment.

We have a saying in my House. If the Critics hated it. its going to be a good movie. If the Critics loved the movie, then it probably sucks.
Same at my house and it generally holds true…this movie rocked it has all it needs Robots and the hottest chick on the planet
That’s silly.
Critics loved WALL-E and Up. Does that mean you hated them?
Toy Story? Godfather? Taxi Driver? Citizen Cane?
“…movie critics have no idea what they’re talking about vis-à-vis the average guy..”
Keep in mind that movie reviewers base their reviews on one set of standards – their own individual standards. That means that when Roger Ebert slams this movie (which he did), he is basing it on knowledge and taste derived over decades of watching and reviewing movies. Based on those standards, T:RotF did suck. And I consider myself an average guy.
But I found it entertaining. Sometimes I go to the movies knowing that the acting might be bad (any Steven Segal or Jean Claude Van Dam movie), the story weak (pretty much any Micheal Bay movie), or the above two items plus many other horrid weaknesses (calling Uwe Boll).
I did not have high hopes for the story line in T:RotF, therefore I was not disappointed. I went to watch a movie with tons of cool effects, some decent acting, tongue in cheek humor, and nice visuals. T:RotF gave me precisely that. Not a whole lot more, but enough.
Unlike other action movies of the past year or so, I will not be going to see T:RotF a 2nd time. I probably won’t get the DVD. Iron Man, Star Trek, Watchmen – I saw them multiple times. Will probably do the same for Harry Potter. T:RotF was more like a fireworks show – really cool to watch, but if offered the chance to see a recording of it, I’d pass.
I hated the first one. But, I am sure I will eventually see this one too =(
I thought it rocked….lots of slow-mo fight scenes and Megan Fox!
I got in trouble by my date when I said “MMM” when Megan first popped on screen. Oops.
This movie is pure win. I’ve seen it 3 times and it was just as good each time around.
TRANSFORMES IS THE ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I’VE EVER SEEN!!! … AND YES, I WILL PAY 3-5 MORE TIMES TO SEE IT AGAIN!
I have never seen a movie more than once while it was still in theaters, so more power to you. (I generally don’t watch movie more than once at all, with the exception of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for some reason.)
I saw the original Transformers movie for my birthday.
I will see this Transformers movie for my birthday.
Let’s see…giant robots? Check. ‘Splosions? Check. Megan Foxxy? Definitely. Thought provoking characterization and dialogue? Aww, Gee, Wally.
Win.
I agree with everyone else, this isn’t a movie that you go into hoping for a great script and tender moments that will make you cry.not good enough !!!
hey limo, you suck with your sad movies that make you cry like a baby, wy i would like to watch a movie thats make me cry? i usualy do this in my real life. you hate the movie because you know that it’s the best movie of this year and you know it you just do not accept.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the biggest misuse of ILM’s special effects to date. Michael Bay is an action pornographer where every shot is the money shot. Does every line of dialogue need that dolly in spin around the actor’s face? Everything is so over the top, the sequences are dizzying and poorly edited. Someone needs to strap Michael Bay down and have him watch “Raiders of the Lost Ark” about nine times in a row, so he can learn how movie is supposed to be shot and edited. This movie passing the $400 mil mark is a disgrace. Worst summer movie ever.
shut up
Name me one movie that’s been well-received but that wasn’t “entertaining.” – Atonement
Hey, I liked Atonement!
I guess I’m not much of a transformers fan…but I can find my fair share of explosions and such with better substance elsewhere (mythbusters for example :D)
it sucks!!!worst movie of the year.all you people care about is explosions and megan fox.bad story, bad plot, bad special effects, and bad film.Megan fox is hot though.
The Dark Knight spoiled me. I actually half-way expect a nostalgic action-figure flick to make it through 2 hours without a dozen plot holes.
Transformers 2 had amazing effects, some very cool IMAX shots, a really hot (and dumb) lead actress…but it also had a really confusing story, too many “comedic” sidekicks, too many glamour shots, and too many inane subplots.
AWESOME MOVIE 1000000/10 :) WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IN 3D THOUGH! THE ROBOT SCENES WAS AWSOME!!!
AWSOME MOVIE 10/10000000000 GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS WOULD HAVE BEEN AWSOME IN 3-D
