iPhone 3GS getting really, really burny and hot

The Wired Gang has an investigation into the hot and burny iPhones 3GS that are coming out, finding that many are getting so hot as to be uncomfortable. Once these reach a certain point they become a toasty brown and could completely fail.

“At some point, I became aware the handset had become very hot,” wrote Melissa Perinson, senior editor of PC World, who felt high temperatures while gaming and browsing the web on her iPhone 3GS. “Very, very hot — not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too…. Toasty doesn’t even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face.”

Wired actually ran a poll and found that few felt it was really overheating. However, there have been reports of problems with these batteries and Apple is remaining mum.

  • I actually noticed mine getting pretty hot when downloading an album over wi-fi but haven’t noticed it at any other time.

  • The Pre supposedly has this problem too. Did they use the same factory by any chance?

  • Haven’t had the slightest heat issue with my mine.

  • I’ve got mine to the point that it was extremely hot and mine is just a normal 3G. My newer one hasn’t really done that all that much.

  • Stop spreading lies about @pple. There is nothing wrong with your iPhone. It is all in your mind.

  • I don’t believe this one bit. I have an iPhone 3GS and the only problem I have is holding a call on the 3G network and the wifi going in and out. Color of iPhone makes no difference they all have the same inner-parts, so how in the name of God could only the white have this issue? Well because there is another money hungry ahole out there that wants to put a bad taste in everyones mouth when it comes to Apple. Nice try, that is pink for one, not brown and I have heard of such a thing as photoshop. GET A LIFE PEOPLE.

  • i don’t believe this one bit.i ave an iPhone 3GS and the only problem

  • Miz and Gryphyn have the religion real bad! You guys need to get a grip.

The iPhone 3gs does have two problems. No question.

    1. It does overheet badly on high load applications such as GPS. After 20 mins its too hot to handle. Battery drain is realtively rapid at same time.

    2. The screen is yellower and gets yellower during use!!

Apple has a history of screwing up on baterries….looks like they have done it again.

What really sucks is that they must have known this and went ahead anyway. Big worry is If they were not aware of it (looks that way) then Apple shareholders should run for the hills.

    I am an apple fan…..just.

  • My *WHITE* Apple Iphone 3gS also overheated today and the battery ran totally out after a full night’s charge and me making 1 phone call after taking it off the charger.

  • My iPhone is not working and won’t even turn on, I only put it on the charger for less than 30 minutes!! This is an outrage.
