Guess what the Lenovo fairy just brought us! This is the new Lenovo S10-2, a $399 ultralight with a 10-inch screen, Atom processor, and six-cell battery. It weighs 2.2 pounds and looks pretty sassy.
The S10-2 has three USB port, VGA-out, and bog standard audio-in and -out. Most interesting is the delicate polka dot styling on the laptop’s cover, perfect for nights on the beach or a weekend at the glue refinery.
We’ll do a little testing of this laptop this week – look for our bonanza netbook/ultralight blow-out shortly – and get back to you on performance and fun-itude.

Lenovo is lagging far behind other IT companies when it comes to helping save the environment. It ranks at the bottom of Greenpeace’s Cool IT Challenge, which scores how much IT companies are doing to address climate change. IT companies can help cut global greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 15 percent by 2020. Greenpeace’s Challenge uses scorecards to evaluate a dozen major IT companies in five areas: Public Climate Speech, Political Advocacy, Climate Solutions, Reducing Companies’ Own Emissions Target, and Renewable Energy Use. In addition to producing the technology necessary for the implementation of climate solutions and reducing their company’s carbon footprint, the leaders of these powerful companies can use their influence to impact key political leaders and call for a strong agreement at the Climate Change Negotiations in Copenhagen this December. Greenpeace will update Cool IT regularly and release the next assessment in August/September. I actually own an S10-2 and really like it. And that says a lot, since I really haven’t been a big netbook fan. The S10-2 feels much more rugged than other vendors’ netbooks, has decent size keys, a great looking display and overall looks surprisely stylish. Most of the people who’ve seen mine are pumped about buying one.
I use mine for watching movies on trips, browsing the Web and even running PowerPoint and Word. All run fine, even with just an Atom processor (just try not to do too many things at once!). The I’ve also found the QuickStart function to be very cool. It only takes about 10 seconds to load when the system has been totally powered off and I’m able to connect wirelessly and browse the Web and call people on Skype!
Gag, another crippled Atom box. Probably priced at $600. HIgh netbook pricing seems to be the trend. Even the ASUS EeePC900HA is getting almost impossible to find at its once ubiquitous $250 price.
