Before I go defile myself with burgers and beer I wanted to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS for you all. The process was amazingly simple. Using a Windows netbook – it doesn’t work under Windows 7 – I simply installed iTunes and ran purplera1n. It took a second to reboot then it rolled through recovery mode, rebooted, and an app called Freeze appeared. Freeze then installed Cydia and all was right with the world.
Here’s how to do it.
1. Find a Windows PC.
2. Install iTunes.
3. Download purplera1n.
4. Run purplera1n.
5. Wait.
6. Run Freeze.
7. Reboot.
Now you’re jailbroken. To run OpenSSH simply install the OpenSSH package in Cydia and ssh to your iPhone with root/alpine login/pass combination.
Jailbreak your I-phone or rent your place on HouseTrip. :)

Lol. They don’t actually do anything after they jailbreak thephone, that would require technical ability. TC can’t do anything more than run the SSH.
It does work on Windows 7. purplera1n won’t detect recovery mode at first so just run the app again and it’ll work. Winterboard doesn’t work though

redsn0w from the iPhone Dev Team works on all Windows and Mac platforms. Really simple. I did it for my iPhone on Windows 7. If you have a 3GS, then grab ultrasn0w from them and accomplish the same thing.

Follow these steps:
1. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
2. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
3. Reboot your iPhone 3GS
4. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
5. Enjoy
cool. I have a t-mobile G1 right now and I don’t know if I should switch to iPhone or stick with it. With more Android devices approaching, the Market is definitely going to explode soon. Also, I wouldn’t be able to use 3G if I got an iPhone since T-mo uses different bands…

At this point stick with the G1. 3G is a really nice feature to have and it’s one of the main attractions to the 3G or 3GS. If anything, I’d wait for a new T-Mobile Android device and get that, assuming it is better than the G1.
Remember that the iPhone’s version of 3g and Tmobile’s 3g aren’t compatable, so you’ll be stuck on Edge. There’s really no point unless you just love the iPhone.
Personally if I were to switch I’d get a G1, it’s a nice phone.
Sure the iPhone’s great, but AT&T are assholes. They can die in a fire, and as soon as my contract is up, I’m selling my iPhone, getting a G1 and they can go fuck themselves.
Assuming AT&T adds tethering and MMS this summer (as they claim on their website) and I’m not looking to switch to verizon or another carrier, what would be the benefits of jailbreaking my new 3G S?

Well jailbreaking is useful for getting apps Apple wouldn’t approve, or if you want to skin your iPhone. For most casual users, jailbreaking won’t benefit them much.
Jailbreak is invaluable to me because it gives me back my terminal.
Well, tried this and got to the part where I’m installing Cydia. It’s been over 5 minutes and seems to have frozen.
Make sure you’re connected to a wireless network.
Will this work if you want to install Microsoft Office Mobile? (more specifically Outlook)?

Yes that’s what I did, I mainly use my Mac to sync, but I just installed iTunes on a freshly installed Windows XP and it worked great!

Keeps crashing on me.
I tried it 4 times but it keeps leaving my phone in restore mode and i end up having Restore my phone each time. ( have tried it with Itunes open and closed each with the same results)(have even tried to be patient and leave it for several minutes waiting for restart but nothing)…… Any Ideas ?????

I have a virgin iphone 3 GS. Can someone tell me if I have operate iphone with o2 sim card before running purplera1n? When I first connect the iphone it informs me that No sim card installed and I have downloaded purplera1n. I have ran the program, message of recover then it says done, wait for reboot – nothing has happened for over 10 minutes. Am I missing something – apart from the sim card?

anyone know what to put in for tmobile under cellular data to get to work with tmobile data?
before i used to jailbreak all the versions thatd come out. now app store has so much apps plus the way its organized with pics and comments, jailbreaking seems old fashioned. the only reason id jailbreak is for the flashlight to be fully bright instead of the cheap app store one.
All worked fine, until I erased FREEZZE with CyDELETE, I suddenly lost WIFI, it is ON and can toggle it ON/OFF but displays no networks, tries resetting network settings to no avail, there is simple no way to make it show available networks.
EDGE / GPRS works fine (too slow for downloading cydia packages) no 3G in my area
will try reseting the phone completely, any ideas welcome, otherwise I will keep posted the results.
dude. i have the same problem. Everything works, but i just lost my wifi, but i didn’t delete freeze. I was using it before, but after ultrasnow something happen and i can’t find my wifi.

Followup: Did a restore from a Backup on my itunes and everything is worming fine. I had rebooted several times before to no avail, so I do not know if it was the actual Restore from a backup ot the reboot after the restore.
Anyways is working perfectly right now, even Ultrasn0w is working fine

Yaaaaaaaa, jailbreak with Purplera1n seemed fine and all, but I guess I downloaded something from Cydia and now it takes FOREVER for iphone to startup and then it wants to go into safe mode

Are the benefits of jailbreaking the 3gs limited to adding Cydia, Qik, Ustream, and enabling it to work with carriers like tmobile? I was with tmobile before I switched to at&t and their service was horrible. The GSM/EDGE network sucked. Im happy to be on their network and have had zero problems. I guess this a way of a rookie asking some proven vets for a little info that for some reason escapes my search capabilities. Thanx

you should always wait for Dev-Team’s proper iphone 3gs unlock… trying anything else might permanently render your iphone 3gs useless or prevent it from unlock in upcoming firmwares.

note if cellular network does not appear and you have restarted phone since jailbreak, you may need to down load APN hack from cydia
2) enter ‘epc.tmobile.com’ for the APN value

Purplera1n RC2 is Win7 compatible, and I can verify this. I successfully jailbroke my 3GS 32gig using Win7’s default run settings (ie no compatibility mode or run-as admin) and have installed Cydia, and a few programs therein. All in all a simple process once you get past any heart-stopping pauses :P
I still get push, I still have 3G and Wifi, as far as I can tell its the full deal. Push has been tested with IM+ as well as email/contacts etc through exchange and mobileme, so it’s all good. Definite props to this guy for releasing before devteam.

ok everybody. My problem is the wifi. I can get it to work and find my wifi, but than my phone cant make calls. im using tmobile.
On the other hand, i can make and recieve calls, but than my wifi stops working.

Yes, if you know how to set it up into DFU mode. Whenever your iPhone stuffs up real bad, just reset it into hard recovery mode – DFU, and reset it to factory settings and install your previous firmware on it.

Figured a way to fix this…hold the powerbutton and the home button down for about 5 seconds, then turn your phone back on, and it should be fine. The jailbreak didnt work but fuckit, im not risking it. Its obviously not working at the moment,
