Big Mike has been pretty quiet about the CrunchPad since it was first leaked the other month and for good reason. We’ve heard from reliable sources that Apple is still on track with an oversized iPod Touch in the coming months. We more or less know everything there is to know about the CrunchPad, but a few more specs have popped up thanks to the NYT and SF Biz Times. The CP, made by Fusion Garage, is 16mm thick with a 12-inch screen encased in aluminum.
Arrington will supposedly schedule an event for the end of this month or early August. It will retail for less than $300 and be available “as soon as possible.” I wonder if we’ll get some company issued CrunchPads for CrunchGear.

I for one can’t wait and will buy one the day it comes out (depending on if the release is in the middle of my PA to FL move or not). Either way, I am pretty pumped about this thing and it’s potential uses.
Does this actually have affiliation with CrunchGear? If so, nice work that’s pretty cool. Going from a tech blog to a tech supplier.
It does indirectly, as Michael Arrington (the man behind the CrunchPad) is the founder of the TechCrunch network. And CrunchGear is part of the empire.
I can’t wait, will it be made available to us Cannucks?
Education pricing? … These would make good 1:1 devices in the school ;)

I am THRILLED that the CrunchPad is coming! I fell in love with pads with my Newton in 1998 and have been jones’n for a modern pad ever since. THANK YOU MIKE!
This is amazing. I was just searching this info on Google! I want one so bad!
You had me at $300!
You had me at Big Mike!
to reiterate: WANT NOW. Putting the appropriate amount of cash away. Just let me know when.
Will love to get my hands on this. Waiting patiently.
Umm, Mike shhh – There’s iphones, smartphones, netbooks, laptops, etc.
I wont tell anyone. Good luck on the roll out.
My fistfuls of cash have been waiting so long to be emptied for this. Soon my precious, soon we shall be together.
that would be a cool phone if it was the size on an iphone but the thickness of like the pics
Will we see one in Australia soon? Or can it be posted oversea?
I’m buying one, as is every tech guy.
Still waiting on weight, heat and battery life details.
There’s no plans for retail distribution, are there? This is the sort of thing I’d need to hold and use before I dropped the money on it.
can it be posted oversea?
I’m looking forward to this, should be fun to use…
This is a game changer.
The print media is running scared. They see this as a tremendous threat to their existence. More so than a laptop, netbook, or cell.
What I have read has said that 300.00 is impossible, that the OS is impossible, that it isn’t going to work, it isn’t going to replace your laptop or cell.
Prove them all wrong!
It’s like waiting for Christmas….
WVCouch, I agree, this thing IS a game changer. When I take a look at this device, I don’t just see the tech applications, I see the practical applications. For home, you can use it as your cookbook, news reader, TV Guide, book reader (bye bye bookshelves), just to name a few. I couldn’t see why you wouldn’t want a few of these laying around the house.
In the professional field, the applications could be endless. I could see a specialized version of the crunch pad being carried around by doctors on their rounds.
I said all that to say this… the possibilities for the crunchpad are endless!
Is this a PMP, MID, or laptop replacement? I could live with a virtual keyboard on a screen this big.
If it has a decent HDD and plays movies, count me in.
I hope it looks as good as the picture in real life. I’d love to use it.
I am pretty impressed – good price, good design and good size – I really hope that the crunchpad will be what I hope :-)
Love the idea. I spend nearly 80% of my pc time online, so a browser only tablet makes sense.
Btw, will it have something like a notepad? Cause that would be really helpful.
@Puranjay
According to the original design, it was based on Ubuntu and boot directly to a browser. I assume that you still have access to the rest of the components of Unbuntu.
Regards
Sign me up i want 3 or 4 of those will they ship to the UK
A worldwide shipment of crunchpad is a must in my eyes – especially Austria should be included in the list.
I really need one – it seems to be a good compromiise between size, weight and functionality!
kurtlar sofrasından cıkmazsam ona yanarım :)
i think the crunchpad is an awesome idea, but i would personally love to see some sort of note taking feature. something this small and light is IDEAL for just taking to class and taking notes with. if they included a stylus and possibly an online word processing service similar to onenote, and then you could just use the dropbox service to sync with other machines, this would be awesome.
Wouldn’t it be possible to take a portable HDD with you to class? Plug it in thru the USB port. Have all your other programs already loaded, and just use it? I’ve seen people with small HDD in smartphone holsters clipped to their belts…
Just saw the article by the Strait Times that Arrington added 3G and some other stuff to it, making it a big iPhone…and now it will be $400…stop, stop, stop! Liked it better when it was just a “simple surfing device”…
I know! i just want one to surfer sur internet. If it has extra space on the NAND for that Linux , a healthy processor, and a gob of RAM, i’m happy. just if you offer with 3G, offer without also. I will definitely buy this over Apple.
Crunchpad FTW!
I noticed this article about the prototype being available on the Chinese black market, or Shanzai market. Interesting: http://tiny.cc/NUHyH
Ok, can you post a waiting list for these because they are going to sell out and I want several of them.
Hi all
When it will be available in switzerland? Or: When can I order one?
Greetings from switzerland

Ben de burdan çıktım ama sizlere thanks
güzel olmuş kardes eline saglik very good
Saw it…fell in love with it..need it…want it….I am waiting for a gadget like that for years now….
I work in education and I’ve been looking for an ebook reader with a large screen and light weight– does anyone know if the Crunchpad could be set up to read pdfs or ebooks? If so it could be a game changer for education as well.
I was wondering the same thing because I am looking for a decent device such as this to use for reading eBooks. The Kindles are just way too small and not great resolution compared to a color-netbook-type screen!
The .PDF reader option is what I want – this is the size of a sheet of paper. What I want to do is scan in my music, then take this to gigs and use it instead of a heavy, cumbersome binder. If it could boot to Adobe Reader, and let me use a USB drive for my music, I’m in (and I know a lot of other musicians that would like this as well…).
You had me at Crunch. Mmm Crunch. If this is as good as a Crunch bar, I’m buying one the day it comes out. Similarities between Crunchpad and Crunch bar:
- Share a word in their name
- Roughly the same thickness
- Both make your life sweeter
- Each inspires envy in your neighbor
- Each costs roughly 1 euro (exchange rate!)
Actually I want it to come out now. Today. So I can order it. And consume the web through it. Give me Give me Give me!
It seems really cool, and is definately an attractive piece of machine. However, I was wondering how this would fair in the Kindle market or even the netbook market. This would be the ultimate tablet if we could use it as a tablet… support a text documet writer, open pdf files.
Without a wifi connection this thing is useless, right. None the less. I think it is a beautiful machine.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t need it to be an IPhone.
Since FusionGarage is in Singapore, I hope at least it will be available in Singapore so that I can purchase it if I happen to visit the country.
If it is available in Singapore I will be over-joyed as I m based there. Can’t wait for the launch!
sensiz kalmak hissi varya. asilmaz korku. beni bırakma nolursun…
It seems that the screen is glossy. If the use of CP is on the outdoors, at street, it’s more comfortable a matte screen in order to read in that places.
Sincerely, I think than glossy screens are useless at everywhere. Glossy is pretty for sale, but not practical at all.
Glad to know about the CP, it’s a great portable device. I wish a big success in sales.

Spain.
This is too cool–I was thinking of getting an ereader or ipod touch, as I am tired of wrist pain from holding up my little ibook or eee pc: I was not happy with the size of the ipod touch or the limits of the kindle. I started researching the web for alternatives and I ran across your post from last year and followed along until I ended up here. I am so excited and can not wait for this to come out!!!! I am definitely not a tech person, but if you need a 30 year old working mother to test this out, I would be happy to try it out!
Can’t await till it is available. Please inform us if we could deal about distribution / resale in Germany.
Best regards, …
Thats what i was searching for for years. Really nice work! Cant wait to see ist here in Germany!
It seems so real now and I can’t wait. I’d like one these! Just want to know some specs and battery life.
Seems nice, allbeit a bit too large… Want one NOW!
Great job guys, though, I can’t believe it took a tech blogger to finally create this. Really like the larger 12″ touch screen and aluminum case. I’ll buy one the first day it’s out for sure!
Also, does anybody know if the touchscreen will be capacitive or resistive? Any multitouch capabilities?
Wonderful. Love how it looks and the BIG screen! Not sure if you guys are planning to ship it to Malaysia. Would love to have one as well.
Mark down another vote for an Australian retailing. I wantum crunchpad.
Will you ship it abroad? To Brazil? Please? (I’d get half a dozen or so… )
why not give it plenty of ram and a wifi allowing it to communicate with each other (like the zune) and a note taking feature plus pdf ? This would be perfect for school use.
just load up google-docs on it… would work fine for collaborative note taking
that’s the point of this whole thing, Bysshe. With this, you can get into the world of Cloud Computing. I want this so i can start!
Getting near the end of the month now any news?
I want one now! Any news on when its coming for sale, or if I can pre-order one from somewhere? Waiting for info:)
