My apologies, Alex. I guess I meant "tourist-friendly" - but of course you are a welcoming and open group. That's why you do what you do so well.

The Franklin usually has fun installations. Last time I was there I went to the "Real Pirates" exhibit and it was great. The hands-on learning stuff is kinda neat if you're there but would be more fun for kids. However; the Star Trek exhibit IS at the Franklin so I'd check it out if you're a geek.

I want to second Vic's... fantastic sushi and a family run operation. Also right next door to Helium comedy club.

IndyHall isn't visitor friendly? That couldn't be more innacurate! Our entire purpose is to be a clubhouse for the Philly geek, tech, and creative scene. We love giving people tours, and encourage them to spend a day working along side some of the brightest people in the city.

And our new office is even bigger and more new faces show up every day, and it's not uncommon for geek/web notables to be there.

Please, drop us a line and say hi!!

For those geeks of a mechanical/military bent and willing to go a bit further afield, the USS New Jersey (http://ussnewjersey.org/)is right across the river from Penn's Landing/Delaware Ave. and well worth a walk-through.

Also, in northern Montgomery County, just off the Willow Grove Naval Air Station is the Delaware Valley Historical Aircraft Association's "Wings of Freedom" museum. (http://dvhaa.org/) They've a lot of cool military aircraft that has been preserved and/or restored, including a Messerschmitt ME-262 (the world's first combat-tested jet-propelled fighter).

Both are well worth visiting.

Your list is awesome, but I have to strongly disagree with National Mechanics. I love their schtick (cool food, nice atmosphere, interesting events, good music, etc.) but the execution is terrible. I've been there three times and each time the food was way overpriced for its mediocre quality and the service was downright terrible. All times I've went I was with friends (different groups each time) who work/have worked in the service industry so we're not the kind of crew who treats servers in a way that would warrant the shitty attitudes we got.
On a more positive note, I agree with everything Helen said, a few comments up--especially Capogiros. They are hardcore about using local products and serving up high quality, delicious treats. Also, Nam Phuong is an amazing, cheap Viet place in South Philly and I love Tattoo'd Mom's on South St, who serve their fries with a six-pack carrier full of condiments!

There are a ton of tech events in L.A. At BLANKSPACES here, we alone have already hosted StartUp Weekend, iPhone bootcamp, Social Media Club, Drinks 2.0, and just this week: Scrum Club. But aside from us, TwiistUp is in L.A., and so is MindShare and others.

I wouldn't be a good tourism person if I didn't mention the nearly 100 hotel packages on gophila.com/withlove. If you book your geeky weekend there, you get a special gift at check-in.

With Love,
Philadelphia
XOXO

Owen - I'm super glad you mentioned this. I wanted to send Independents Hall, our co-working site, but it's not exactly visitor-friendly. But it is awesome.

Other places to eat/fun stuff to do:

Tandoor India Restaurant !!!1! - The best indian food I've had, with a kicking buffet special. It's a little hole in the wall restaurant with the same family working there for the last 20 years or so.
(Google Maps 104 40th St south, go into street view. One click left has a better shot of the sign.)

Monks Belgian Cafe - lots of interesting beers on tap. And great specials on mussels now and then. :)

Capogiro Gelateria - Fantastic Gelato and sorbets. A place I go to every time I come home.

I'll second the Museum of Art, and if you're a museum type person, there's the Rodin museum, too. Also the University of Penn's Archaeology and Anthropology museum is freaking geek heaven. They have some incredible exhibits there. If it hasn't closed, the Natural history museum was a really fun one for kids, too.

This is great idea guys. If you ever want to do D.C. I'd be happy to help! Once you get a few cities under your belt, I expect an "aroundme" type app that helps me locate these places.
