flashlight

When the power goes out and you finally find your flashlight, it’s invariably out of batteries. Soon you’ll be able to buy a solar-powered flashlight from Chinavasion. It’s got a built-in lithium-ion battery and uses white LEDs with a rated life of 50,000 hours.

It could very well be the last flashlight you ever own — assuming, of course, you don’t misplace it somewhere in your house like I have with every flashlight in the history of portable illumination.

The “Solar LED Flashlight” is still in “coming soon” status and must initially be purchased two at a time. No pricing info yet, unfortunately, but as long as it’s reasonable, this thing might be worth a closer look.

UPDATE: They’re $9.79 each — not bad at all.

Be sure to have plenty of beer on hand for that impending power outage, too. Preferably Carlsberg. Ah subliminal marketing, you’ve done it again!

  • I am still not convinced that the old fashioned lights with regular or rechargeable batteries are not the best. The wind up and solar powered lights I have seen so far are not bright enough as far as I am concerned.

  • Tennessee might have a point. But it does depend on what you are going to use it for. Sometimes you just need a little bit of light for things like an evening walk or taking the trash out.

  • i like this flashlight. I hate to recharge my bettery while i am out for dinner. But with solar light charger battery, things may become more easier.

But how long should you have to charge for the flashlight?

  • This post is awesome. I bought one solar flashlight few days before M. Aamoth wrote his post.
Mine is a 100 000 hours lifetime cast plastic body 6 LED Solar one. I got it at 7€ (US$ 5). It is branded Urban Tech (another Chinese product).
I can say it’s a surprising product. It works very well. It gives me 8 hours of good powerful light for 2 charging days. So powerful that I can’t watch the LEDS, even in a mirror.
I don’t know for wind up flashlight but for having testing it, Tennessee does not know what he (or she) is talking about.
I also have 2 dynamo LED flashlight from China again and this is another good concept, maybe more reliable than the solar one.
All that said, thank you M. Aamoth and thank to TechCrunch.
P.S. TechCrunch Guys, please don’t forget me the Crunch Tab.

  • Not to brag – okay, I will – ours are better. It is a question of components – buy cheap LEDs and you have a poor product. Small panel – less energy. www,bogolight.com
