210825162Here’s one for the “Why would I buy a netbook when I can get a full-fledged notebook for the same price?” crowd. Buy.com has a new-in-box 15.6-inch eMachines notebook for just $299 with free shipping.

Specs are decent, if unspectacular but, hey — cheap notebook:

  • AMD Athlon 64 1.6GHz CPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 160GB hard drive
  • 15.6-inch WXGA screen
  • 8X DVD burner
  • Vista Home Basic
  • Six-cell battery
  • Weighs six pounds

  • The reason to still go with a Netbook over this or any other Laptop is simple. Lighter weight, Longer Battery Life, and a Smaller Footprint round out my top 3 reasons.

    • I’m curious which netbook is available for around this price that would out last a 6 cell battery ? I had a HP netbook with a 3 cell battery and it maybe lasted a few hours.
Maybe you guys know something I don’t ?

  • This is a bait and switch. They’re $342 with shipping. Still not a bad deal though. If I’m not mistaken the Athlon 64 supports hardware virtualization so WinXP compatibility mode should work in Win7 (ditching Vista is a must). Wish it came with XP Home instead of Vista.

Todd, if you really need long run time, look for a netbook with a Via C7 or AMD LX800 processor. These last a long time – but they’re slow. Maybe ok for basic Web surfing, word processing etc., but I doubt they would even play YouTube videos though. These can get really cheap. I saw a 7″ low resolution screen model somewhere last week for around $150 USD.

  • this computer is going for 198 at walmarts black friday only! 5am to 11am so even if its not the best laptop go out there and sell it for more then for 198$
    have a good one
