We knew that Sony was working on Blu-ray MegaChangers since CEDIA 2008, but we didn’t know that it would take almost a full year to get our hands on ‘em. Anyway, here they are: the $800 BDP-CX960 and the $1900 BDP-CX7000ES. What’s the difference you say? Well, actually, plenty – not $1,100 worth, but there is a difference.

The primary difference between the two chargers is the target market. The $1900 model comes as a Sony ES product. That means this guy is equipped with RS-232, IR-in, and Gacenote support, which downloads album art and relative info. Folks that spend real big bucks on home automation are accustomed to getting raped for their laziness. These are also the same people that will spend $1500+ on a universal remote.

The $800 BDP-CX960 is the working man’s changer. It doesn’t have all that fancy-pants home automation crap. It just holds 400 of your favorite Blu-ray, DVD or CDs. That’s all.

If you’re one of those that collection physical media is your pride and joy, expect these models to be available in August.

  • This thing is Phat!! But 400 Blu’s would cost a small fortune. At best, I could fill it with 5Blus and 50Reds “thanks alot Tosh”:)

  • High marks for entertainment value if it works as well as their similar CD jukebox. Stand by for lots of very spectacular jams, scraped disks and so forth.

    • +1

You’ve gotta be kidding, right? Why would anyone pay $800-$1900 on a video jukebox that most likely will have the same problems as their CD jukebox? Especially in an age where electronics are built with less & less moving parts…. Fail.

I would much rather see Sony work on a Blu-Ray player that would include a solid state hard drive for this kind of money,so, I can store my BDs and never have to physically handle the discs again. But, why look to the future when a sucker is born every minute.

      • without compression lets say a blu is 25GB, 400 of which is 10 TB, so it’d need 5 spindle dives. SSD are at 320GB now? so 31ish of them?

  • Yea…Point taken. I may have been a little far fetched with my resentment but, even, if you used 5 HDDs what could this player really offer to justify the current price tag? It’s not like Blu-Ray audio has been adopted yet and even the Blu-Ray concert discs don’t utilize the maximum specs when they are recorded. So, seriously, what is Sony offering here besides a microwave sized box for physical storage that I couldn’t do with a PC and a few Hard drives?? AND for, even, $800 walk away with a pretty beefy system…
