It’s not so much that it’s chubby as that there are unfair expectations placed on its dimensions. What is a hard drive to do when 12.5mm is considered fat? Because that’s what the mother of appearance-based computing, Apple, is saying. Apple’s sleek hardware won’t admit any hard drive thicker than 9.5mm — a shocking bit of hardware elitism.
Oh, how I look forward to the day when a drive can be judged solely by its capacity! Don’t worry, Western Digital. There will always be a place for you in giant HP laptops.

You mean EXCELLENT HP laptops right?
No HE MEANS FAT!!! hehehe gotta love apples slim laptops!
Weird. I wasn’t even aware that there were differences between 2.5″ drives…
I figured there was some minor variance, but I guessed that no hardware maker would spec their stuff to just not include some sizes…
With portability growing in importance 12.5″ isn’t acceptable.
Is that only in the single-piece aluminum body MacBook Pro? Or will the “beefy” 1TB HD fit in the previous generation body? I sure could use double the capacity soon…
i’m gonna go with Dan D below. This advisory is only applicable to unibody macs.
It should fit in the pre-unibody 17″ MBPs.

i already have a 12.5mm 500gb drive in my new unibody 17″ macbook pro. it’s a non-issue on that unit.
How new is your 17″ macbook pro? Does the battery have its own access panel? I only ask because I just got my 13″ last week and hope this HD will fit in mine?
