Hopefully Verizon has changed it tune for good on WiFi. Generally the carrier doesn’t allow WiFi-toting devices to be sold with a Verizon Logo affixed – there are a couple of small Winmo exceptions- but it seems that the BlackBerry 8530 will be 802.11 b/g enabled. Not only that, but it might be the first Verizon BlackBerry to come loaded with OS 5.0. Pricing or availability info hasn’t been announced, but once those float into our tip box or RSS feeds, we’ll let ya know.

  • Have any of you guys actually checked out Verizon’s lineup before you write about Verizon’s lack of wifi enabled devices? It’s almost as if you’ve heard it so many time, you just keep repeating it without even checking it out for yourselves.

This isn’t a shot at you, Matt. This is more about gadget bloggers in general. I think you guys would be surprised at how many Verizon devices feature wifi, if you actually checked it out for yourselves, instead of just beating the drum.

I know it’s easy to hate on Verizon, but there are a lot of myths out there that just continue to perpetuate. It’s getting a little old reading the same things over and over again, from people who have, obviously, never even looked into it themselves.

    • Verizon has four and AT&T has 12. That’s a big difference, Nate.

      • All of the current Verizon Windows Mobile phones, that aren’t legacy devices, have wifi. 5 of the 8 WM phones currently offered by Verizon have wifi. The remaining three are as old as the hills.

Like I said, there isn’t a CDMA Blackberry in existence that features wifi. So, there’s really not much to say about that part. If you take away the iPhones and Blackberries (which Verizon can’t have) the score is 6 to 5 in favor of AT&T.

The point is, the tide started turning on this wifi issue quite awhile ago, but you wouldn’t know if all you did was read the gadget blogs for your info.

        • I know. It really sucks when facts muddy up things like this.

The fact is, Verizon has just as many WinMo phones with wifi as AT&T. The iPhone is an AT&T exclusive, Nokia only makes GSM S60 phones, and there’s no such thing as a CDMA Blackberry with wifi.

  • Dear sir,
I wanted to ask you if you would try this

    http://www.internetuse.tk

& promote this open source wifi and internet use survey.

    SEE: http://www.internetuse.tk

I notice that you are often commenting about opening wifi access and security issues. This survey is designed to explore how people are thinking about this issue, it’s an URTAK survey which means that anyone can see the results and any once can ask questions of their own. Unlike other polling it’s very democratic & open minded. I.e it’s not designed for selfish reasons but to educate anyone who takes part.

The tricky thing is that we need statistically relevant numbers, at least a couple of hundred to make data viable, so maybe anyone seeing this can try it out & help promote it?

    Please HELP. Thanks
