Remember that quote from Sony’s CEO about not lowering the price of the PS3 because they’d lose money on every one? Not exactly the truth. In fact, since the statement was made just a few weeks ago, it actually seems that the man was telling an outrageous lie. I mean sure, when it was introduced almost three years ago, it cost a bundle, but according to new Sony statements, manufacturing costs have gone down by nearly three quarters since then. And yet the cost to you hasn’t changed! Weird.
The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule… About 70 per cent, roughly speaking.
I guess the idea is that if you’re the only player in the PS3 game, you don’t need to price your product competitively. And in a way, that’s true. No one else is making PS3s, and Sony repeatedly says Nintendo isn’t a competitor and ignores Microsoft’s lead altogether. So in their mind, they’ve got a monopoly. Why adjust pricing?
If they knew the price would come down, as they felt they did (and as it turns out, they were right), why didn’t they price accordingly back then? Obviously they wouldn’t want to sell a million at a major loss and then see sales trail off as the cost of manufacturing goes down, but they could have handled this better.

Sony is in their own little world right now. Let them have fun before they all go bankrupt.
When you let microsoft walk in and steal your market you know you messed up
Lol a Vaug…..that is so right….especially when everyone like to hate MS….
but I still like MS products as it easy for my Dad to get used to….
Sony=Greed=Fail
everything they sell are more expensive than others
That is so very true
you guys are all broke ass posers. when you little xbox gets redone all there gonna do is make it as good as the ps3. Bluray, web browser, six axis controlers. just because you cant afford it doesnt mean it sucks. Think of it as the lamborgini of consoles and your 360 is the chevy malibu, because it’s cheap and will probaly break down on you. And if there are any 12 year old girls reading or senoir citizens than just know the wii isnt even close to compare. great controler but gay system.
It’s clowns like you that make the rest of us PS3 users look bad.
You guys are just poor. This is the lamborgini of counsoles while the 360 is kinda like the chevy malibu, cheap not worth much and is probaly gonna break down on you. And the Wii is like a moped for to ride but not a comparable machine. and as far as the next gen systems go all microsoft and nintendo are gonna do is try to catch up to the ps3. Bluray, Web Browser, And not to mention the ps3 exclusive MAG. 256 people online in one match with keeping you over 30 frames per second. Bring on the debate.
Nintendo’s not going to try to catch up. They don’t need to; the Wii outsells the PS3 by far. The 360’s already very powerful. Not quite as much as the PS3, but does it really matter? It’s about the games, not the graphics. And while you list MAG as your example, I can list the Halo series, the Gears of War series, and a bunch of others. It really comes down to what games you prefer. No need to bash the other.
And with the way our economy’s gone, calling people poor because they don’t want to spend $400 instead of $200 is just ignorant.
sorry for the repeat but i had to get my point across besides its like 6 against 1.
Well, Wii and 360 owners do outnumber PS3 owners in about those proportions…
I feel that in the long run, Sony’s utter arrogance about how the PS3 should be worth will be the wake-up call for them. Surely it’s gonna take another ‘loss of moola’ to get their brains ticking again.
I agree. they should have been more forward thinking and lost some money on the front end in exchange for a better share in a huge, growing market.
None of you seem to understand economics. Sony sold the PS3 for less than its cost so that they could make money (directly and indirectly) from software. They planned to recoup the losses from this strategy by selling extra consoles. Since they failed to sell as many consoles as hoped, they can’t lower the price yet. They have to use profit from the console itself to make up their losses.
i have always been quite addicted to banging up ps3 on google news and reading what is happening etc. lately i have been on holiday for 3 weeks, not even bothering to read online.
here i come again, the same small minded little people who bitch about the better console. i actually have a ps3 and love it – but kids can’t afford it – not the ones that i teach. the ps2 was awesome because it was cracked or 2nd hand software was easily available. the market is now easily big enough for all three consoles. sony need to reduce the price and sell a new console for the asian market – it is priced way to high. only 20/30 next generation consoles have been sold – there is still a huge market out there.
do people really want sony to fail? let ms dominate the market? i mean really??
wise up little people.
Well from a pure business case, it’s not at all unusual to not change the price as your costs drop, most especially when you’ve been operating in the red for most of the product life cycle. Assuming that the PS3 manufacturing cost has dropped in a linear manner over time, then their average cost since launch would be $520. So in total, they’re still in the red. The real problem here is that they undersold the capabilities of the PS3, touting it primarily as a gaming console. There are BD/DVD/CD players on the market for more than the price of a PS3, and less-capable media servers for comparable money. Many people spend twice the price of the PS3 to dedicate a PC/Mac as an A/V media server. For me, I use the PS3 mostly as a media console. I’ve read about plenty of others who do the same thing. Comparing this to the Wii in terms of cost for functionality is pointless.
i have a ps3. graphics are way better on the ps3, but there’s more people playing online in 360. in theory i think the ps3 just came really late into the market and at a really high price, specially concidering the economy and thats why its doing so bad in sales. the 360 and wii came to the market first, and at fairly standard prices. and as far as the workmanship goes, everyone knows sony outdoes microsoft. its not the ps3 that constantly last year got the rings of death. when the next console from microsoft, and sony comes out, i can assure you sony, will come out on top.
You could use 7 controllers for sports games (soccor, football, etc).
