Japan’s biggest gaming publication, the Famitsu, has rewarded another RPG for a Nintendo system with a perfect rating today. After giving Dragon Quest IX 40 out of 40 possible points, all four Famitsu editors testing Monster Hunter 3 (aka Monster Hunter Tri) think it’s worth receiving 10s from each reviewer, too.

It’s not really surprising. The Monster Hunter brand is huge in Japan. But no game of the series has ever made its way to America or Europe. Capcom will release Tri in these territories, however (in “early 2010″).

Famitsu is known for being very cautious when it comes to giving perfect ratings. Here is a time line for all 40/40-games so far:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, for Nintendo 64)
2. Soul Calibur (1999, for Dreamcast)
3. Vagrant Story (2000, for PlayStation)
4. The Legend of Zelda – The Wind Waker (2003, for GameCube)
5. Nintendogs (2005, for the DS)
6. Final Fantasy XII (2006, for PlayStation 2)
7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008, for the Wii)
8. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008, for PlayStation 3)
9. 428: Fusasareta Shibuya de (2008, for the Wii)
10. Dragon Quest IX (2009, for the DS)
11. Monster Hunter Tri

Here is a Monster Hunter Tri demo from the finished game:

  • Then am eagerly waiting for it to the UK market. Any possible date?

  • “But no game of the series has ever made its way to America or Europe. Capcom will release Tri in these territories, however (in “early 2010″).”

the first monter hunter was released on the ps2 in the states.

  • They’ve given five games perfect scores in the last year and a half, three of them for the Wii. I wouldn’t call that very cautious.

  • The games have definitely been released in the US. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was the latest on the PSP (released in June stateside), and as Mike pointed out, the first was released on the PS2.

They just don’t sell as well as they do in Japan (and undergo slight re-naming). But MHFU has gone a bit viral here in the States recently, probably due in part to the amount of coverage MH3 was getting leading up to the release in Japan.

  • They’re saying that the games of monster hunter haven’t reached the US because the type of game they had in Japan was always a different, and dare I say, better version of the serious. The titles weren’t just different, so was a lot of the gameplay. I’m hoping this time, we all stand on the same ground in this Monster Hunter 3 game. I would like to test my skills out with japanese players.

  • To correct you capcom released the first monster hunter on ps2 here in america, and there have been three psp titles

  • Ok easy….The Monster Hunter series has been out in the states for a while now. All were released for either PS2 or PSP, PS3 lost game rights to Wii, and monster hunter 3/Tri coming to you 2010. Play monster hunter it’s well worth it.

  • This game is going to be great. All of the game that Famitsu gave hundreds all had an average rating of atleast 90. So this game probably should be no different.

  • is monster hunter 3 ever coming out for 360 or psp ps2 ?? case i realy whant it but dont have a wii plz help me!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. i have all freedomes and monster hunter 1

  • Sam,

Monster Hunter 3/Tri is not expected to be coming out on any other console than the Wii.

You can buy a fairly inexpensive Wii Bundle from Costco. It costs less than $300, last time I checked.

Anyways… Almost all of the Monster Hunter games released in Japan came to the U.S. Monster Hunter, Monster Hunter G, Monster Hunter Freedom, Monster Hunter Freedom 2, and Monster Hunter Unite (Portable 2G in Japan) all arrived in the U.S. I’m pretty sure they were released in the UK as well.

    And to Obsidian,

Just because they gave out a lot of perfect scores in the past few years doesn’t mean that they’re not cautious of giving them out. It just means that, in the last year or two, a great deal of good games have been released. That’s all.

I’m really looking forward to this game. I only own the three PSP games, Freedom, Freedom 2, and Freedom Unite, but I’ve loved them all. I can’t wait for this game to be out.

Thank goodness online gameplay won’t cost us anything, here, in the U.S. I was worried at first that we’d have to pay Wii Points to play online, like Japanese players have to. But, like with Monster Hunter, we don’t. :D

    Woo! Can’t wait!
