What’s the story with OS X updates? Seriously, it’s beyond comprehension. This one (10.5.8) only resolves around a dozen bugs and security issues (this or that not displayed right, general stability improvements in specific programs) yet tips the scales at a mammoth 274MB. And this isn’t the first one like that! What could possibly be taking up all that space?
I guarantee it’s not replacing 274MB of code, or even a tenth of that. Is it maybe that OS X is so sewn up into modules that minor issues have to be addressed by replacing the entire library? It’s a bit like curing a cough by removing the head. At any rate, the update has some fixes for bugs that may be bothering you, so get downloading. Or maybe it already is downloading the background, as I have found my Mac does even when I tell it to stop. Creepy, really.
You can get the other updates (server and such) over here.

dude mine is 165mb. check it:

Looks like the standalone version is 100MB more. Fresh mystery!
Intel only (Hitesh’s machine’s update) vs. Universal Binary (general download for Intel/PPC).
That’s a big reason why Snow Leopard has a much smaller footprint, of course, since it’s strictly Intel.
ummm… it is because there are things included they are not telling us about. (GASP !! no, not Apple… they never are anything but 100% truthful) ;O)
Here in Australia it’s weighing in at 165mb for the Intel only version. After I installed it I think my iCam is watching me and my mouse moves without me touching it sometimes.
Yep, mine says 165 as well. Downloading straight from the Apple software update though. I hope to god this fixes the stupid ass bug where you can either have the computer on or off, and you can’t put it to sleep without it freaking out. Will report back.
Yes!!!! YES YES YESSS YEEESSS YYYEEESS!!!!! It seems the bug that was making me shutdown my laptop in place of using the automatic sleep function is finally fixed! I can simply close my laptop and it doesn’t screw up now! I’m jubilant. White macbook 13″ for the record.
