Twitter was down for a little while yesterday (it’s still a little iffy), and it was the closest the United States of America has ever come to collapsing.

P.S. I know the song is played out; that’s why I picked it!

  • CitySpeek.com is a great alternative for when twitter is down.

    • Go jump off a cliff and take your spam with you.

    • Jmartens is this your low budget (quality) startup?

twitter cost about $10 for the cost of hosting per month when it first started………

Seems like cityspeak.com is hosted on a $2.99 hosting server. Really? youre here telling the world about Cityspeak?

im getting really tired (not sleepy) of these lame new startups who have ZERO monetization plans.
It should be illegal to make a new startup and tell the world about it if it does not have a plan to make money. Solid, sexy plan to monetize.

BTW- Why is it interesting that Twitter went down? My company has 48 servers hosted all over and ummm they goo-down once in a while!!! Who cares right?

      • > It should be illegal to make a new startup and tell the world about it if it does not have a plan to make money. Solid, sexy plan to monetize.

Umm… did Twitter have a plan to monetize when they launched?

        • >Umm… did Twitter have a plan to monetize when they launched?

Who are you? Did you get your education from a Cracker Jack box?

Twitter is a 1 in billion PIPE DREAM!

My point is if one gets really sincere and looks deep into your soul you will look at how to make money that is sustainable for ones self and family.

The original founders of Twitter had a regular “day job”. What they started was a fun social web project that turned successful.

Now if your like me and make your entire income from building web projects then it is important to design companies that have a good monetization plan.

So when I read garbage promotional crap like “check out cityspeek” (with two friggin ee’s) I throw up in mouth a little.

For me personally im more interested in subscription and pay per use models.

I guess if you work some boring corporate job then cityspeek is perfect for you! :-)

      • Would you… shut up?

      • Yes, Matt…it is my startup. More of a side project though. The guy I created it with and I both have day jobs and families. It’s crazy to think of what two guys can accomplish in just a few late nights! In Portland, none-the-less…a town known for not getting anything done!

Okay, I see how it looks like spam and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t trying to get some attention and traffic. However, the real point is that there is so much else beyond Twitter and maybe we should use Twitter down times to check things out. Honestly though, sorry for my spammy post. I’ll refrain from doing it again.

Anyway, I don’t take CitySpeek that seriously. It was fun to make, that’s all. I wont get all mad like you appear to be. Thanks for following our progress, I’ll make sure to do the same with your company.

    • No… it’s not! First of all, it’s not a very good service, hands down—poor design, slow.

But, more importantly, using this service temporarily doesn’t really solve the problem because no one is on it!

  • It didn’t effect me because I’m not a tweeter.

  • Wow Twitter going down had almost the impact on American society almost as horrific as if PINKBERRY had been destroyed!

  • Lame… I’d rather watch the “Bing Goes the Internet” video before watching that again.

  • Twitter already died when its source code was hacked and handed over to TC :P

  • TechCrunch really needs to get off the Twitter teet. The rest of the world doesn’t really care.

  • I hesitate to further reveal my cultural illiteracy, but I actually *liked* the background music used in the video and [embarrassed grin] don’t recognize it, much less find it “played out”. Where’s it from?

  • So I incidentally started watching this video as soon as the score to Clear and Present Danger came on Pandora. EPIC.

  • This is about as noxious as cloistered self-absorption can get!

  • WTH is up with that vid… lame

  • Where was I when I couldn’t get TwitSpam? Well I went crazy, I missed the 95% of bots that exists on Twitter.

Oh, and I stopped getting Twitter Techcrunch spam. You know:

Techcrunch I have a new article, please click on it.

Fags. Or better yet CNN: click me love me kiss me

spam spam spam. I use it to send out Spam to

    what’s the soundtrack ?
we sand people don’t know such supposed-to-be-obvious stuff

    thanks much for kind reply

  • OUCH why is everyone being so mean to Jmartens of CitySpeek.com – However even though I personally don’t see it as a Twitter alternative it does have some local appeal. I think I would see it more as an alternative or compliment to CitySearch. Maybe that his is monetization goal is to have a good exit strategy and sell out to a big local search marketing company?

  • Resonable? Typo?

    Hilarious video though. <3

  • Leave Cityspeek alone! punks!

    • Lets tie Bobby to a table and make him look at cityspeek for a week! No a month!

Seems Bobby is in love with people who make crap products and then try and spam comment boards.

Do you realize Cityspeek is on a shared-hosting server? GET A CLUE!

      • Matt you are no better trying to promote what you do on these post I have seen come on chill out sometimes people need boring corporate jobs to help pay the way for their start-up dreams. We all have dreams and I signed up for Cityspeek and it is totally usable and functional and there are features it has that I wish Twitter had. I think they have a fair chance with their lil start up and can see many ways for them to monetize but I guess it is all about personal opinions and thank goodness yours is not the only one!

        • Rachelle King – I really did not promote anything. I’m here simply because I love Internet business. You are right I have been a little harsh. I guess Im one of the “old-schoolers” who is jaded from all the pipe dreams I’ve participated in over the years. A few years back I took a good long look at why I was not having great success with my ventures and now I run multiple Internet companies that are profitable.

On the issue of corporate jobs….this is good if it makes you happy. I just have come to see this as a type of slavery in which you can lose your job and income at any moment on the whim of “the boss”. At some point I think taking responsibility for your income and life involves a deeper look. If you have a corporate job for a means to an end like to pay for a 3 year spiritual retreat then I suppose a corporate job is awesome! But if your trying to move your dreams forward i see corporate jobs as highly unstable and damaging to ones spirit.

If were getting deep here then I would simply point out that writing out a domain name for the purpose of marketing ones product or wares is super cheesy and invokes or rather induces vomit to spew from my mouth. The reason we have signatures with the ability to list your Website is to properly promote your product.

But like you point out this is 100% my opinion and not the only way to do things.

      • Not sure why the bashing of Cityspeek.

I think we all have to start out some where. Looks like he is trying to fill a niche. Could turn out good for him.

As you said in your other reply, you make a living developing websites, yet you post comments that reflect a demoralizing sense about you and insinuate you have probably burned more bridges then ones you have actually made it across.

Your Joomla site is not even completely out of the box. You have issues going on with your rocket theme powered layout. The Rocket theme plugins are not working right. You could see this instantly, when viewing your portfolio.

We all love to add websites to our portfolio that we have worked on and claim them as our own creations, even those sites that only required a snippet of code from us.

I think you should look at making friends that help promote your company. Make the wrong enemy, could have negative consequences down the road that you never expected.

Building solid business relationships without stepping on the little guy, would be much more productive and have the most desirable consequences!

        “Cheers”
        JP

        • True my site is not all polished. I have too much work to care really. in the future I will remove my web URL as your point is well taken.

  • I blame Drew’s Cancer for all the crap I am getting in the comments.

  • I apologize if I offended anyone for my critical and possibly offensive comments on TC. I did not eat any food until nearly 3pm and I tend to spew trash from my mouth when Im super hungry.

My apologies to the TC community.

  • Love and Peace :-)

  • i seen that two day’s twitter is not active and that’s the reason i loss lot’s off traffic and i can’t effort this .

  • I was more productive when twitter was down :) and when facebook went down with it i was delighted and went for a picnic.

  • Where was I ? In the countryside, being and feeling alive…

  • uhm i finally watched the video because i wanted to know what song you used (i should have read dalia’s comment) but i saw 10 seconds of it and that was enough to see what everyone is saying. there’s no need to be mean though. kinda remindes me of your other twitter write up.

  • what is that twitter thingy?
