The end is near, my friends. Please observe self-heating canned food. Ready to eat in about 12 minutes, you can choose between Beef Casserole, Vegetable Chili, and Sausages and Beans. Apparently via some sort of “safe exothermic reaction” these “HotCans” become self-aware somehow. Or heat themselves up. Same basic difference — they might as well be self-aware.
And while traditional canned delicacies such as “Sausages and Beans” may cost less than a dollar, these HotCans are suitable only for the very well-off. They cost — wait for it — eight bucks apiece. Mmmm, eight-dollar Beef Casserole…
They’re available only in the UK at the moment, but this is far too amazing of an invention for them to not show up here in the US in the near future.

I won’t be happy until we have self-heating ramen.
Perfect for camping, survivalists, or keeping in the pantry for when the weather turns bad. I like it.
they should be available also in the US, saw them there about 10 years ago. I think it’s a chemical reaction of calcium carbonate with water causing heat.
Calcium carbonate is limestone, and if it reacts with water, the west coast of the USA should be REALLY REALLY HOT all the time.
Isn’t it already?
I am sorry but this sounds and looks gross!
I really have no desire to eat something, from a can no less, that can heat its self up!
Thank you NO!

Why? You don’t have to eat it from a can if you don’t want to, there’s this invention called a bowl ;). And your pan is probably made of the same (or a like) material as the can.
I’ve seen something like this state-side before. I think it was for hot chocolate or something fun.
The heating mechanism, from a chemistry standpoint, is very similar to those heating packs that you can take for camping or for the winter. When exposed to air they start reacting.
This is not a new concept – I bought a can of self-heating sake in Japan in 1991…
well we’re not allowed a microwave at work, so…
Wow, I was JUST talking about this kind of thing with my cousin the other day, and BAM, somebody else does it.
There was something similar to this in the US though, self-heating coffee by Wolfgang Puck, I had a few, but they were recalled because the cans sometimes tended to leak or go off on their own.
Ah, I totally remember those now. Wolfgang Puck, that was it. I knew I’d heard something about these in the US. Thanks, that was bugging me.
For $8 a can, I’d rather get some MRE’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRE) that can self heat too….but you get more food and it’s more nutritional.
Last time I checked, you needed an MRE heater(iron, magnesium, & sodium composition + 2oz. water) to heat up an MRE. These heaters cost $10+(pack of 12) alone. Plus, you have to buy MREs by the case(12/&80).
So, the $8 a can is actually a bargain for something that is self sufficient
For $8 of nutrition worthless junk food I would rather have salad.

I laughed at the “As seen on YouTube” icon… Oh man, what ISN’T seen on YouTube?
hotcan is crap i only wanted normal food and i got that!!!
How will disposing the can affect the environment? Is it recyclable? Will the chemical be harmful to the environment?
i think its aboon for camping n all!
great future ahead!
wanna see it soon here in INDIA!
