Before you watch this be warned it’s pretty graphic. I’ve seen plenty of people swerving because of texting – one guy I saw was on his old, ratty Nokia rolling from lane to lane as he texted whoever was most important in his life while traveling 75MPH on I75 in Ohio – and this PSA really shows what can, and probably will happen, in a terrible number of texting-while-driving cases.
The PSA was made by the Gwent police department and is part of a 30 minute movie. This 4 minute tidbit is enough to make me rethink checking Google Maps on the iPhone let alone SMSing “WTF LOL” to anyone.

i text while driving on an iPhone, do you know how hard that is? very. but its in hawaii so no big highways to kill myself on
you’re a douche….
I know that, in many ways, it is wrong to say that it is ok to text while driving. But I think on an individual basis, it sort of depends.
I was in Hong Kong during SARS and H5N1 and H1N1. My best guess is that wearing face masks probably saved a few lives and increased public awareness of proper sanitation. Or on a broad scale it reduced transmission and therefore helped everyone. But a given individual’s risk of all-cause death was probably only reduced by an insignificant amount (especially given the fact that everyone else was wearing a mask). An individual would have been able to reduce all-cause risk of death by, perhaps, a greater amount by, say, wearing a wrist-band that said “look both ways before crossing the road.”
In less developed countries the roads are not as intelligently designed. You’ll often enter a gentle curve, only to discover shortly that the curve gets a lot sharper. Not to mention potholes. In the states that much more rarely happens. Driving is often a mindless activity in the suburbs or on rural highways. That can make some people forget about the dangers they face by driving. So on a broad scale people need to be encouraged to pay more attention when they drive. But that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t text while driving, provided you carry out due diligence.
Many people would be horrified by the way I go right through stop signs (where it is very clear no one is coming). But those same people might not pay enough attention to potential disasters that I would consider much more important. Or they might panic during a skid because their ability to manage such risks simply explodes in such situations.
Disclaimer: I only text when I am stopped at a stop light. I think I might have texted a few times while on a rural highway. I don’t disagree with any laws against texting while driving – that sounds like a good idea to me. I just think before you criticize someone for texting while driving you need to consider how or why it is done. Evaluating risk is complex.
that was amazing as a joke. it must be an ironic post. trully you forgot to include the innocent coming in front of you in his car. 1 woman died and the other critical because a fool was playing with his ipod like today. i don’t care if you burst in flame in your own car, just don’t kill anyone of my familly. “Evaluating risk is complex” sad
Ok skin. Perhaps you are not equipped to discuss this logically or with an open mind. I don’t think you actually read and understood exactly what I said. Fair enough. Bring on the entertaining ad hominem attacks.
Skin, for a clue, try this video: http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_gilbert_researches_happiness.html
“Dan Gilbert on our mistaken expectations”
You’ll probably find his opinions “sad”, however.
eyes on the road .
if you can not see what is on the road then you are impaired .
cell phones impair you enough as it is . when talking on the cell phone you become less aware of your surroundings.
texting while diving your even less aware of your surroundings .
whats the car 3 car lengths ahead of you doing ?? what about the car in the rear ? is the intersection clear ? whats the speed limit ? is this a school zone ? is that bus stopping ? does that pedestrian see me ?
most of these questions could not be answered while texting .
when your driving you have a responsibility to yourself and others on the road to be paying attention to what the hell is going on .
when your abilities are impaired your reactions are delayed and your judgment skewed . so when an event does happen you are less likely to be able to properly respond to the situation .
with attitudes prevailing that its acceptable to txt while driving we are going to end up with more people on the road not aware of whats going on and less capable of responding to changing circumstances .
and that is not a a road i want to be on.
Texting demands 100% of your concentration. Even if you can type without looking, its stealing precious processing time from your mind. Time that your mind needs to react quickly to a constantly varying environment, not to mention how fast you travel on average in a car.
How about being considerate to fellow human beings and pull over for 20 seconds to type out a stupid message that DOES NOT matter especially given the grand scale of things (you’re driving, you’re a 50-60 km/h+ weapon).
So, we’ve concluded its highly dangerous to text and drive, or do anything not related to operating a motor vehicle while driving. How do you try to stop people behaving like morons? 1. Ban the driver’s use of mobile phones in vehicles all together, and 2. Shocking ad campaigns like this to raise awareness.
Still, people don’t take notice – these people deserve to be beaten to within an inch of their life. Then tell them, imagine you’ve just been in a preventable car accident caused by an ignorant, selfish asshole like you. How do you feel?
exapted – I’m sorry, but your “disclaimer” is a bit off. You see my Mom was killed by someone driving on a rural highway. It was a beautiful day and she and her friend were walking to a hiking trail when someone who was obviously distracted hit her at 70 mph. According to the accident report this person would not have been looking at the road for apprx 9 sec. You say evaluating risk is complicated, but when it comes to saving lives even if the risk is small the consequences are huge… is it really worth texting LOL?
Laurie, people often pay attention to some risks, while ignoring others, often to their peril. So, for example we (rightfully) worry about drunk drivers but don’t think enough about drivers who haven’t had a good night’s sleep.
While I agree that drinking and driving is a horrible practice, and I simply don’t do it (I only drink wine at home sometimes before dinner), I think it is realistic to say that sleeping only 3-4 hours in a night might make you a more dangerous driver than drinking a glass of wine.
So if I don’t get enough sleep tonight, should I be allowed to drive to work? If so, then why not let someone who is slightly drunk drive home? Well, I have a good answer – because there is a test for blood alcohol level, but no test for sleep deprivation. And it is a moral imperative to stop a driver with a certain blood alcohol level, because we can. But that doesn’t mean that driver is more dangerous than many others who haven’t had a drink. Maybe when we have a test for sleep deprivation it will be illegal to drive on less than 4 hours of sleep. But for now we just ignore it, don’t we? It doesn’t mean the risk doesn’t exist.
So what does this all mean? Laws about drinking and driving and texting while driving make us all safer, on the scale of an entire population. But in one individual, there are probably a lot of other factors that we ignore. The person who texts while driving might really know when to do it safely. While that might be hard for you to believe, consider the sleep deprivation vs. intoxication example I mentioned above. A drinker might be a safer driver than someone who is sleep deprived, and there are studies to back up this claim.
Maybe this is too subtle for a blog comment. I think it would be interesting and useful to really analyze how accidents happen. Blaming texters doesn’t particularly help in such an effort, although it is understandable.
If you are a reasonable person you would find my driving habits to be safe. I haven’t had an accident or a ticket in several years.
And by the way I am in full support of laws against driving while texting and driving while talking on a mobile phone handset.
exapted – while I appreciate your comments and actually agree with some aspects of what you’re saying; I look at the world through a very different lens now. And the argument about sleep deprivation is a good one. Ironically, when reading my Mom’s journal she decided not to go to her weekly Bible study the week before her accident because she didn’t get enough sleep the night before. The fact is… there are rules and regulations about “professional” drivers and the amount of time they can log without taking a break. I don’t know what the answers are but it seems we need a shift in how we operate as a society. I heard the stat that 25% of accidents, including traffic fatalities, are due to inattentive driving and that number is probably low (according to our attorney). In WI, where my Mom was killed the lieutenant said they have 600-800 fatalities a year. Even if we are conservative and say 10% are now due to phone use. That is 60-80 individual lives – in one state. Say conservatively, each of those individuals have 25 close relationships… keep doing the math, I can tell you are an intellectual. Again, I don’t have the answers but I know the executiating pain of loss due to someone’s else stupid decision which basically had ZERO consequences. She got a $174 fine because she wasn’t doing anything “illegal” at the time when she killed my Mom. My Mom had at least 30, if not 40, years left. My 2 year old used to do a special little happy dance when my Mom came to visit her and now she is already starting to forget her (my Mom was killed in April of this year). Christmas was the time of year my Mom and I always would shop together – either in person or over the phone – this year I will be going alone for the first time. I have cried every single day since her accident; the good days I only cry, the bad days I sob until my body aches and my husband does all he can to consol me. We live in a society that is desensitized to the news… I’ll admit I was one. I would say a quick prayer for those on the news who experienced tragedy, but never really understood their pain. There will always be pain and evil in the world, but if we can help eliminate and reduce some it will be worth it. If you are truly interested in banning texting while driving you can contact Congress at http://www.congress.org/congressorg/issues/alert/?alertid=13827076&type=CO
I just contacted congress. I added the comment that simply using the actual handset while driving should be banned.
Really? You stop at stop signs when it’s clear no one’s coming? Tell that to the person who killed a 32-year-old father of a newborn baby girl and his widow who was killed by someone who blew a stop sign in Iowa because “it looked like no one was coming”.
Don’t justify yourself or your behavior, I only hope your stupidity doesn’t kill anyone. And may no one ever take away from your post that it’s okay to warp common sense.
exapted: your argument is absurd. sleep deprived driving is dangerous, hence drunk driving is okay? that’s like saying it’s okay to kill people since they are eventually going to die anyway! whether you are sleep deprived, or drunk, driving safe is your responsibility. any justifications you try to give for your moronic actions like blowing through stop signs and texting while driving, no matter how smart you think you are, is simply ridiculous.
you dumb twat
Bailey Pattengill
i bet you are a fat military wife
i hope you drive right off the pali hwy and fucking burn
stupid bitches like you and retarded locals arre what make this island a shittty place to drive
get fucked and die you dumb cunt
I find this highly offensive, this poor schmuck is a special needs boy and you insult his gender and his mental ability. How would you like someone to insult you if you have a sub moron i.q.
My husband, son, and I as well as many friends drive the freeways in Hawaii, and there’s lots of places to crash and burn Bailey Pattengill. If you don’t hit another car you’ll hit a pedestrian. I hope when you do that you’re thrown in jail without your cell phone for the rest of your life. nyarltep – why the gratuitous slam at the military and “retarded locals?” you one f’d up sacred cow or what?
Hellooo? Did you evenWATCH the clip, those girls were on two-lane highway!
Bailey, grow up! I USED to text while driving my motorcycle many years ago but quickly gave it up when I realized the potential of it KILLING me even while driving on quiet, city streets.
Yea right, how about a medium size tree? That will render you paralized from the neck down to be drooling for the rest of your life. Just shut off your phone for some peaceful mental thoughts while driving, as well as just plain ole paying attentiion to your or someone elses driving!!!!!!
Really I dont know you but I’m compassionate for people; I volunteer my time several times each month for the homeless; and in some weird way I care about you and if you feel so impowered, perhaps I can shake some sense into you. Rellly maybe you can become a poster girl for other young people- they may listen to you if not me.
Do you care if not about yourself, about others? Tomorrow start to do one thing for others each day. You will see your life change ; you will begin to value your life like never before.
Sincerely
BUTTERFLY BLUE
I don’t drive and I don’t use my phone much, so I don’t really understand the need some people seem to have to check their phone while driving. Videos like this are certainly enough to put me of even thinking about using a phone while driving once I learn, but I have the feeling there are people out there who would ignore a video like this because they know it’s fake.
It’s a very well put together video though. I couldn’t bear to watch it with the sound on though, they tend to put horribly realistic cracking noises into videos like that.
There are tons of new things that are so distracting on the road. Moving advertisements on billboards are meant to divert attention. Dvd players in the dashboard are bad too.
Let’s all move to Canada and eat grass and forget about all this techno-mumbo jumbo.
That’s nice of you to think that Canada is just an isolated field where none of this happens. A little ignorant, but believe me it is all the same.
They don’t pull any punches do they.
I’ve seen people who can drive while texting, but for the most part, most people can’t and that’s why this should be strictly enforced. I don’t want to be driving along and get into an accident because some dumb fuck thinks texting someone is so important.
I have seen people who text and drive as well. The problem is that anyone has the ability to text and drive. These people who get themselves and/or other killed because they were texting and driving more than likely have texted while driving in the past. The odds just caught up to them.
I agree that I don’t want one of these idiots putting me or my family at risk and anyone who texts while driving is increasing that risk to those on the road around them.
This video is crazy. No one that texts and drives currently will be swayed. The main characters text practically killed the whole town! Idiots will do what ever they want and not care about the consequences. Thats why they are idiots. I’m going to go text this video to someone now…while driving …my motorcycle… in the rain… with no helmet…going the wrong way. screw it i’m going to just shoot people it’s a faster way to kill than a car crash.
And why should 16 year old girls (and boys) not drive? Because they are NOT mature enough and despite this not being real, its true of what can, does and will happen when you put idiots behind the wheel of a car, who do not have their priorities in order.
That video scared the shit out of me.
Well done. I’ll play this for my kids before they ever get behind the wheel of a car.
@ Troy – most sensible person on this page. Couldn’t agree with you more.
you should check out http://www.zoomsafer.com – a new solution that helps keep drivers focused on the road, yet connected to friends, family and social networks.
I WANT MY MOMMY AND DADDY TO WAKE UP.
IMHO, the law is there to enforce good habits.
When you’re young you have great reflexes and reaction time. I used to be able to read a map, eat a burger, and drive fast all at once.
So while I knew I was engaging in risky behavior I thought I had it all under control.
Wrong. I have never caused an accident in my 17 years of driving (and I live / commute in the Bay Area) but realized after I hit 25 that my bad habits were going to eventually cause one. And once you hit a certain age, it’s a lot harder to change a bad habit.
Now I follow the 3 second rule and add a second for every bad condition (dark and raining that’s 2 extra seconds). My lane changes are done well ahead of time even if I do get stuck behind a column of people who get cut off by the more aggressive drivers.
My lesson here is this:
Start early with the good driving habits. Don’t blame the law when you get a ticket. It’s doing you a favor.
The US should really take some cue’s from Australian PSA commercials… Australia’s PSA’s are terrifying, so terrifying you usually remember them for the rest of your life which makes them extremely effective. I lived in Australia for many years and about ten years ago they had an anti-speeding commercial where a little boy was run over by a speeding mother, I had nightmares for a week.. and now I never speed. Australia can get away with showing R rated commercials on TV because our AMCA isn’t as spineless as the FCC, which allows PSA’s to be extremely effective.
All you need is to see a child get annihilated by an SUV to scare you shitless from speeding, or the surgical removal of a smokers lung to prevent you from smoking, or the ejection of a family from a van during a sleep induced collision to inspire tired drivers to pull over and sleep.
Well done Australia for making PSA commercials without the sugar coating, we can’t sugar coat accidents in real life, so why should our PSA commercials be sugar coated?
I only text at the stop light. Usually I wont finish my sentence and have to go to the next light, but since I dont have a QWERTY keyboard, I memorized the taps, so I dont have to look. Just like typing on a computer keyboard. When you get used to it, you dont have to look.
That looked hilarious! Final Destination: TXTng!
My point is, some teens will watch that and just go, so?
Drivers are now in cars that go faster, shorter reaction time, more distractions, and on roads not designed for speeds excessive of 60-75mph.
There is NO need to text while driving, unless stopped in traffic during an accident. I only would use a cellphone to talk if emergency (like following someone that caused an accident to help the police…).
BTW, law enforcement officers are WORST for txting as I see them often on their personal phones while driving. WTF??
Ever notice how many accidents are caused by the AmberAlert signs? I bet no one includes the stats of rear-ends when those signs light up and cars hit the brakes.
Let me explain this once: Driving is a privilege, not a right. You have NO right to text, to make calls if you are operating machinery (car, truck, bike,…). If you do, you are taking others lives, along with your own under risk of injury and/or death. If I see you out there, I will report you.
You cannot drive safely while sending a text, talking on the cell phone, trying to read the newspaper (yes! actually saw someone doing this), with unruly kids, in an argument, eating, late for an appointment or whatever it is other than driving.
If you don’t care or respect or care for your own life, at least have the decency to not kill someone else.
I was behind a girl the other day who kept slamming on her brakes for no reason, not going when the lights turned green and was driving extremely slow (sometimes going too slow is just as dangerous as going too fast especially on the busy roads here in New Jersey). When I finally was able to pass her I noticed she was texting. The horrifying reality is that no one is a completely safe driver no matter what you think. Here in NJ and NY we have a “hands free” law that does not allow the use of a handset AT ALL while driving. If you are seen using one you are pulled over and given a ticket. The problem is this does not pertain to the use of other electronics such as Ipods and GPS systems, only cell phones. I think that driving laws in the United States need to be revised and every state should have hands free laws.
@Dan- While you may be correct about 16 year olds not being mature enough to be behind the wheel, what about seniors whose reflexes have deteriorated? Their sight and hearing is not as on key as it used to be, their reaction time is not as quick. I really feel that anyone over the age of 60 should be re-tested (in both the written and mobile exams) every few years to ensure they are still capable of driving.
Thats funny because I believe in the exact same thing. A friend of mine was in a serious accident at an intersection where an elderly (95 year old!) man did not give way to him. When he finally realised he was about to hit my friend he put his foot down on the accelerator not the brake making the accident many times worse than it should have been.
What on earth was a 95 year old man doing on the road? Theres no possible way he could still have the reflexes or judgement to safely negotiate traffic. I strongly believe in people over 60 partaking in a hazard perception test every TWO years. Expensive as this may be, what is the cost to society of cleaning up accident after accident caused by elderly drivers? I’m glad you made that comment, you share my views and opinions exactly. Its great to know theres at least one other sane mind out there!
Dumass , but people will not learn I don’t feel
sorry for them ……… they will be back on the road doing the same thing all over again
thatd be funny if someone came out with a parody of this controversial commercial… and the guy flying the helicopter was texting too and flew right into a mountain… the guy that ran to the car first was texting while running tripped and hits his head on the bumper breaking his neck…. and on and on… the fireman holding the hose is texting and it turns on and blows down some old woman bystander…. run with it
Thatd be funny…..I’m writing the screenplay as I text…while driving…and eating a canoli…oh, shit i just spilled the fucking hot coffee all over my crotch…shit a car…hit brakes……too late…now I’m fucking screwed…
Did anyone else get a youTube ad for Tom Jones? Ha…such a perfect combination…See cause he’s Welsh and the video takes place in Wales.
Ah, the wonder of machine intelligence.
ok, texting while driving is bad.
I am guilty… i text and drive..should I? no
could i kill someone? Yes
will this video change my habbits? not likely but it may cause me to think twice about it next time i pick up the phone.
I agree some folks are better equipped to multitask at a high level, some arent… i can.
the main cause of the accident in this video was the fackers were all driving on the wrong side of the road…sheeesh.
anyway, texting while driving is bad…that’s why I drive a Hummer, yes, i know… but i like the fact that it runs on a mixture of Ozone and Panda tears
being an asshole is hard work….
sent from my Iphone while driving, enjoying a coffee, getting a blowjob and running down old ladies on the sidewalk….
cheers,
Evil Monkey
Careless driving is the one and only one which is responsible for many of the accidents. We really have to take aware of that.
I haven’t seen anything about those in the car of someone driving and texting – the children – the co-worker, the parent of a grown child. It is scarey to be that passenger, it is worse when it is your grandchild in the car, who’s mom is very head strong.
Sleep deprivation – I stopped driving because I have Sleep Apnea and I fall asleep if I am not physically active AND I am on narcodics. I took responsibility and turn in my drivers license and it is not easy getting around with out one.
I was also hit by an older lady with cataracts I could see from a car away, she was on her way to the eye doctor to make arrangement for surgery – ironic?
I think everyone one has to start making some decisions about when they drive and when they should not drive. It really ticks me off that people do things that risks their lives and that of others.
People need to learn how to go home at night, do their thing and turn their minds off when they go to bed, learn how to mediatate, talk to your doctor, there are many options and possiblities to try to get a good night’s sleep.
Narcodics should be classified with alcohol, but many, many people are on them and they drive, narcodics can be found in a person’s bloodstream and I hope they find a way to test for it on the road. You may think you are okay, because you can function better physically when the pain is gone, but it does affect your brain activity.
If every driver saw every car and pedestrian coming or in front of them, then there wouldn’t be accidents. To think that you see everything all the time is total b.s. and pure arrogance.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve almost been hit by cars running stop signs and by drivers texting when they clearly thought no one else was on the road near them.
I watched the video. After I read over the comments being made and can say that without a doubt it has done one thing if nothing else, made people start thinking about the subject. I understand what they are trying to do and I can see the different views being presented. I feel that this video may effect some but as a whole the effect may be very small. I say this not trying to take away from the purpose, rather by taking into account the generation it is targeting. This generation is use to graphic scenes and see much more graphic scenes in the video games they play and many of the movies they watch. I myself viewed graphic videos when I was younger while taking different driving courses to learn to drive a car and later a truck and I can say some may have effected my actions but the biggest influence came from other more experenced drivers that I could identify with, and actual driving. We all need to stop and ask ourselves when is it time to take the resposibility of our action out of the hands of the law makers and put it back in our hands. We all, and I include myself need to stop the next time you get into your car ask yourself before you look down to get that cup of coffee or bottle of water, check that radio station, change that CD, answer that phone, or one of the other many things we do while driving, can it wait until I stop in a safe place to do. Could what I am doing cause an accident. Bottom line getting mad, being abusive of others, law suits, will not fix the problem. Only we can by being more responsible for our actions.
I am receiving replies to exapted’s arguement. Please reply to his argurment unless you have something to talk to me about!! Thank you very much.
Working in health care brings to mind that this is NOT an unrealistic cause of events. All motorized vehicles can become lethal weapons and texting while driving or even talking on the phone can be distracting to the activities and events that surround you. I have seen many young drivers horsing around while driving or riding in cars. The importance of knowing that an auto can be a killing machine may not be a fundamental teaching in our society and probably should be for all new drivers. Have our lives gotten so driven by keeping constant contact with one another we put safety first at risk?
Retired Fire Fighter/EMS of 25 Yeas – Many that comment here have NO CLUE. I have had small children die holding my hand before we could get them and assistance to save their life. Later you find out it’s all because somebody went to grab something from the back seat or they was dialing the phone. Be the person that tries to save these life’s, be the person that has to tell a mother that her 16 year old just passed away, better yet be the person that’s opening the door when they explain your loved one just passed away because somebody wasn’t watching the road but they were texting a buddy.
Hi Bill,
Thanks for your post. You’re 100% correct that many that comment here don’t have a clue. I do, in fact, I am one of those people who got a phone call this year that my Mom was killed by a teen who was not paying attention while driving. I believe there was enough evidence to prove she was on the phone, but the police said since it was not illegal to talk on the phone it didn’t really matter. The consequence this teen received for not watching the road for 9 seconds (according to reconstruction report) was a $174 “inattentive driving” fine.
If you’d like to see texting ban you can sign this petition at the following http://www.congress.org/congressorg/issues/alert/?alertid=13827076
And, lastly, thank you for your service. I have two cousins who are fire fighters.
Oh I have a clue, my grandson is a risk everytime he gets in the car, He spends as much time with me as he does his mom at times. The pain of knowing that something like that puts him at risk everyday is a real physical pain in my heart.
Folk let me tell ya as a EMT I have seen it all, drunks, medical emergencies on highways, and fatal accidents but the cell phone is the best device made for communication if it isn’t used while driving. It only takes a millisecond for something to go horribly wrong. I watched the video and can tell you that it would be fairly accurate as to how things would go but 4 minutes is nothing. You probably won’t even see a fire engine or medic unit in 4 minutes let alone exturcation in that time. Cutting you out takes time, alot of it too. and to get a medivac in that amount of time you almost have to have the accident in front of the helipad. Do everyone a favor don’t text or answer the phone. Save a life, the life you save may be your own.
most of my friends ext whie they driive. i do it myself it doesnt really effect my drining because i still pay attention. but then i think of the consiquess and things that could happen if i were to one dday look down and BOOM!. bbut it never really got to me about hw dangerous it is untill i saw and herd of my friends etting into accidents because they were texting while drivig. It really opeden my eyes and ears. i plan to not do i anymore. do to these videos i haave watched. my eyes and ears are all for the road ahead of me now. :) (:
I am happy that I am not distracted when receiving in coming text messages. Drivesafe.ly mobile application helps me to listen to messages.
