As much as we’d like the Tapplet, or iPad, to make its debut next month, it’s looking like that won’t be the case — as we’ve heard. “Sources close to the company” say that the event will be on September 9th and will most assuredly not be Tablet-related. Instead, like last year’s September announcement, it’ll be new iPods and possibly that fancy new iTunes we’ve been hearing about.
While the inclusion of yet more services into Apple’s increasingly bloated all-purpose media player may be seen as excessive, you can always count on Apple to at least sell it.
As for the iPods, we can expect a capacity bump, price adjustments, and of course, the camera everybody’s been talking about. It’s been all but announced since the rumors started last month, but I get the feeling just a camera won’t be enough for Apple to announce; they’ll probably have some cool new service as well. How about photos shared directly to Flickr via nearby iPhones? No?
The real question is, will we see Steve? He’s been spotted in the wild. Don’t be surprised if he makes a cameo. They might be saving the big Steve reveal for the tablet, though.

Finally! Hopefully the daily fake Apple Tablet pictures and posts in my RSS feeds will die down now.
you and me both, buddy!
Of course the pictures and videos related to tablet increase expectations. Tempting to see what wonder happens.
Maybe they are keeping it under their hats for the moment.
My thoughts exactly!
Techcrunch has another article on how secret working at Apple is, so why should we believe anything they say about their upcoming event?
WOW! Something awesome is going to happen!
I can only feel it! STEVE! go STEVE! GO Apple!
Show us more price tag innovation!
Mmm, iPad… droool…
Haven’t all kick ass apple products been “one more things” released unbeknownst to anybody though? Y should the tablet be any different? When are they going to announce it? There’s no macworld to keynote…
maybe it wil be the iphone 10gx
I just want an iPod Touch with everything on the iPhone except the phone. GPS, Wifi and camera.
what a pity….
i really want a tablet apple!
“While the inclusion of yet more services into Apple’s increasingly bloated all-purpose media player may be seen as excessive, you can always count on Apple to at least sell it.”
I find it funny that TC which puts ads in every available space is calling Apple’s product bloated.
Pot meet Kettle.
hopefully Steve Job has something up his sleeves. I’d actually like to see a price drop with a capacity increase. the ipods have been declining in price while increasing the price. We’ll see what happens. http://ziggytek.com/
You’re not kidding about iTunes being bloatware. I love watching the Office everyday but iTunes is KILLING me. Slow.
He didn’t say iTunes was bloatware. He said the player was “increasingly bloated”…
Ever consider it’s not iTunes, but somewhere along the pipe, or your machine?
it’s iTunes.
“increasingly bloated all-purpose media player”
Hardly bloated at all, but rather efficient and with high utility.
Yes, let’s all go back to one device for one function only. Carry around all kinds of devices and a bag of power adapters for them all.
Devin, the 21st century started over 9 years ago. Come join us.
iTunes isn’t a piece of hardware you carry in your pocket. Single-purpose software is effective, small, and often open-source. iTunes is a mess of weird interfaces, DRM, and features I never use.
It makes sense to me that the next Apple event and iPod release will be on Sept. 9, because the “buy a laptop for college and get a free iPod” offer ends Sept. 8.
That’s nice but where’s my Crunch Pad?
And the twitter thing in the picture has what to do with this, lame.
rumored social media functions in itunes?
The next version of the iPod Touch must have the ‘wow factor’.
Otherwise most people will sit it out and wait for next years iPad.
Tablets are for geeks and Apple is not a geek company anymore.
Maybe Steve finally signed The Beatles up for iTunes. The Beatles Rockband and the remastered catalog get released on Sept 9th.
Just a guess on my part.
Apparently TechCrunch’s “source close to the company” is AllThingsD.com, where this story originated. Nice reporting, guys.

Crap, i left the link out! Thanks for keeping me honest, it was meant to be there at the bottom.
It would be nice with a cam on the display side. Then the ipod would be a superb communicator, – videocalls, Skype. Somewhat difficult to solve though, if we want the ipod to work as a camera (video) as well (optics and display on different sides of the device). But maybe Apple has something up the sleeve :)
Yes!!!! I want a new iPod Touch. If the price is reeasonable, I’m getting it for sure.
I can’t wait to buy a f—— iPod Nano 5th Generation to put all my songs, including my new yet-to-be released song, on.
Kiss kiss.
Lady Gaga ♥
You probably are right but I also would have thought the release of Snow Leopard would get more love, one of the most underpromised – greatest-delivered OSs in history.
In fact Snow Leopard will redefine the word “Upgrade” to mean what an OS upgrade should mean: “Better!” No, not by media standards of feature creepers galore…This OS is faster and cleaner…that is, Intel Macs bought three years ago will actually benefit from this OS upgrade. An OS that doesn’t force you to upgrade your hardware. When has that ever happened?
In the meantime, the “tablet” hype is starting to make a some sense as well. Maybe, however, September’s events will introduce something unannounced after all. It won’t be a Tablet, ala’ Tablet PC, but will be a new product category, somewhat like what Jobs did last year at this time and the media yawned.
Remember the “Let’s Rock” and the media yawned? “Remember the funnest iPod ever”? And the stock went down because analysts’ were clueless because they were expecting a “something new” from Apple when it was right in front of their noses: a new product category being entered by Apple and now the game industry is actually changing strategies and shaking in their boots.
So it will be soon when Apple does it again. It might look “disappointing” to a lot of analysts expecting a netbook or tablet pc product. Most likely it will be an evolutionary step that breaks new ground into a new product category. So here are 10 reasons why an iPad makes sense:

Even if I knew what the Mac iPad was I don’t think I could must up the strength to care. Outside of a few specific applications and industries, the whole idea of tablet computing was a stillborn concept to begin with.
I don’t see how iTablet changes that and I really don’t understand what Apple sees in the concept, if they are working on it.
Few predictions for this shindig: Snow Leopard is available Mid September, iTunes 9, we say goodbye to the iPod Classic, and refreshes on the Nano and the iTouch.
Someone knows where this event is gonna be held and where to get tickets?
…there is nothing about this at the Yerba Buena C. A. website :(
Maybe everybody is talking about a camera for the ipod touch, but in my opinion a microphone is almost as important as a cam.
The only thing that could induce me to get the Touch would be a storage capacity greater than 160 GB. As cool as it may be, 64 GB is woefully inadequate for any decent sized library of music and video. I don’t think this is going to happen, though.
