As just discussed in the CrunchGear chatroom, I don’t know anything about District 9 because I’m eventually going to see it. All I need to know is that right now the movie is ranked number 26 on IMDb’s top 250 list and has an 8.9 out of 10 rating. If the movie keeps the 8.9 rating after more votes are submitted, it will surpass The Dark Knight (8.8), Star Wars (8.8), The Empire Strikes Back (8.8), and LOTR: Return of the King (8.8) as the top Sci-fi movie of all time. Not that I’m going to read these comments because they will certainly contain spoilers, but is the movie really that good? Like better than The Dark Knight good?

  • What people have really been craving are original ideas. This is by far the most original movie idea, most likely since Star Wars and not based off of a book or comic. That’s why people, as well as myself, went to see it. The plot was very rich, sometimes lacking in explanation at times, but I’ll bet a sequel is already in the works to cover those.

  • It was first and foremost an action movie. The “story” thrown in to sew all of the explosions together was pretty light, but it painted an interesting environment.

It was really enjoyable to watch, but I thought it lacked a lot of depth.

  • It was a very solid movie. Very original concept that focused on telling. Definitely worth seeing. I am not sure it is as good as the Matrix, which is my personal benchmark in Sci-Fi.

  • yeah definitely a very good movie that was completely original with atleast two or three twists that I did not see coming.

District ??? will definitely be out in 2 years to wrap it up, or it could go on for more than 2 movies which I’m guessing Peter Jackson will try to do successfully once again

better than the dark knight good???? that’s the real question people

  • It’s the best movie I’ve seen in the past 2 years, when did the Dark Knight come out? ;)

  • The Dark Knight wasn’t actually that good. Y’all got snowjobbed by Heath’s (very good if not excellent) performance. The movie itself was all effects on top of a very sketchy script. The scene with the two boats and the moral conundrum? Lordy was that awful cinema.

Now the one before that, with Bale in the lead? *that* was a nice piece of cinema.

  • Agreed larry. Batman Begins was spectacular. Great camera work, awesome script.

  • Dark Knight good? Not even close.

The movie was enjoyable to watch, but it really lacked depth. I was disappointed, but that can be more then likely attributed to the fact that I went in with a lot of expectations. I really though the plot was going to be a lot thicker. I was expecting to see the hardships the Prawns faced and their interaction in sociality. I also feel like I couldn’t connect to the Prawns. They were portrayed as savage beasts in the movie. Although there was an exception for one character, but I felt like I could not connect to them there fore I didn’t gain sympathy.

I will buy it on Bluray. But I’m hoping they make a sequel to wrap the story line up.

  • haha, I’ll write a better comment after you’ve seen it. But I thought it was good and fun, not great.

  • The rating was already that high before it was even released. It won’t last.

  • I have to disagree with everyone saying that the story lacked depth. Perhaps these themes were just very subtle or nuanced, but the movie certainly raised the issues of torture, scientific experimentation, and the use of non-governmental organizations in a military capacity. There’s also a tinge of a love story thrown in there for good measure, which I would use if I were trying to talk my girlfriend into seeing it with me…

Furthermore, I think the setting of Johannesburg, where the people struggled against apartheid, was meant to highlight the issue of cultural and specie conflicts throughout the film and show how quickly we, as people, can forget the struggles we went through and create another system of intolerance against another group that we find to be different from ourselves.

All and all, I found it to be the deepest science fiction movie in a long time…

  • There was a TV series called “Alien Nation” that District 9 appears to be based on. It was a pretty good TV show, as I have watched almost all of the episodes, and found them to be entertaining enough as TV shows go:

  • IMDB always jumps the gun with saying something is the “Best Ever” whatever. It’s too volatile to be any standard.

9District 9″ isn’t “The Dark Knight” good, but it’s very good.

It’s technically very impressive, the premise and presentation are fantastically original, and the themes are there, but underdeveloped. So far as action flicks go, it’s tops. But it acknowledges deeper meanings to what we’re seeing, but doesn’t follow through with them. All the same, GO SEE IT. It’s not perfect, but you’ll be glad you went.

And I’m sorry, to larry and nick2slick who said “The Dark Knight” wasn’t good? Seriously? You’re even going to argue that?

    • You remove Heath Ledger from dark knight and you have a bad movie.
All the romantic thing with Rachel Dawes was pathetic. The script is too confusing trying to say something. But it says nothing, it’s just good vs evil and it tries to be something developed.
All you are expecting in this movie is seeing the joker and some action, all the rest is boring.
Batman begins was much more better.

      • I don’t think your argument holds up.

Heath Ledger was a huge part of The Dark Knight’s success, but it also had amazing cinematography, as well as powerful themes surrounding Harvey Dent and society’s tendency to worship, then destroy heroes. It begs the questions, What s a Hero? What sacrifices do we ask of our heroes? The scenario with the sonar cell phones compels us to consider surveillance, whether it’s worth it to sacrifice our privacy in the name of safety. The script and the role of the Joker (not Ledger’s portrayal) explore issues of order, anarchy, and human nature. I’m just scratching the surface here.

Even if the rest of the movie was eclipsed by Ledger and Top Notch Action sequences, It Still Had Those. You can’t just say, “Well, without those, it woulda’ sucked”. The Lord of the Rings without computer graphics woulda’ sucked. Citizen Kane without Orson Welles woulda’ sucked. You can’t strip the movie of it’s finest parts and criticize what’s left. But even if you do that with the Dark Knight, you still have a movie on par with Batman Begins.

If you thought there was only a dashing villain and some explosions, I’m sorry, you’re missing a LOT. You might want to watch again.
