Ooh la la. A real deal Android tablet this summer? Am I dreaming? No! I’m so in love with this OS it’s disgusting. Put aside my sickening love for a freaking OS and consider taking a gander at AppsLib? It’s the Application Store for Android launched by Archos, which states that registration will begin on September 15 “following the launch of this initiative”. If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite then how about some specs for the Archos Android tablet?
The tablet will rock a 5-inch 800×480 screen that plays back 720p content natively. And lest we forget, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet (that’s what they’re calling it on the AppsLib site) will have an HDMI out and comes with natively embedded OpenGL libraries.
Somebody fucking pinch me! Want!!!
*Note to self: do not drink and post because you curse way too much.*

Beautiful news, we all share your love for Android, somebody at Apple just grew another gray hair
Awesome!!! I’m gonna have to get one.
How about disclosing that this is what the Crunch Pad is. Which is what is behind your recent Apple bashing.
So far Android is not very impressive. Nobody buys tablets. Archos has a history of making products that nobody wants. So we will see if any of this changes.
What?
get over it Mr.Ha. No one at Apple is losing any sleep on this one.
Apple has always looked carefully at what Archos were doing. Archos invented the hard drive mp3 player and PMP years before Apple.
“somebody fucking pinch me! Want!!!”
When they bring back queer eye, they can cast you as the tech guy.
Ewww… An Android tablet? From Archos? I’ll pass.
I would have to say that the Archos 605 WiFi that I own was the biggest gadget mistake I’ve ever made. I will stay away from anything ARCHOS. Pure garbage and no customer support. Don’t waste your money.
I too have a 605 and it is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. I had an older 20 GB Archos that was awesome and when it was time to upgrade I bought a 605. The battery life sucks and it rarely connects to my PC’s. Their support is weak as well. I keep it in a drawer now and use it maybe twice a year.
The Archos 5 (60GB) is $155 refurbished at archos.com that’s about the same price as a 8GB ipod nano. Talk about a skewed perspective of the value of consumer electronics that you guys have.
What’s the point of playing 720p natively on a 5-inch 800×480 screen?
To benefit HDMI out of course.
Exactly, imagine using Archos on a dock connected to your 42″ HDTV, and connected with a full sized USB keyboard and mouse. If this ARM Cortex A8 powered Archos Android Tablet is powerful enough to run a full Chrome Browser Experience, then I think this could replace your laptop. It could be like a desktop/laptop replacement that you unplug from the Dock when on-the-move and dock back for larger screens and user input interfaces.
Same as watching movies on the iPod/Phone.
“Ooh la la. A real deal Android tablet this summer?”
Umm, no. It’s Autumn on September 15.
really? someone should delete stupid comments like this…
Umm, no. It’s summer. First official day of autumn is September 22.
Actually it’s spring… here in the Southern Hemisphere! :-)
10 points!
It’s nearly winter here in Chicago!
Haha, touche
I think this space is going to become crowded very quickly. Apple Tablet, Crunchpad, and Archos for now.
But all the big netbook operators will be after this new market in a big way. Dell, Asus, Toshiba even Sony perhaps.
So come this time next year I reckon we will have more choice than Brad Pitt at a cheerleader meet.
Just because it’s a space doesn’t make it a market! These are all just experiments at the moment, like many tablet experiments before.
Smartphones are a 150 million units sold per year experiment. I think it is pretty logical move to also make slightly larger screens that are still pocketable yet provide a more Laptop-like experience using higher resolution screens. And eventually bringing the laptop experience down as well to use smartphone like user interfaces.
You’re right, it’s the UI that’s going to make the difference (and connectivity of course). Some smartphones are more successful than others… and tablets with a Windows UI have been a total fail.
the crunch pad’s gonna suck… it will get raped by the apple and archos.. how a bunch of geeks can compete in a segment that is so slim margin is beyond me, for a product that will suck regardless who makes it…
Android Tablet!?!?! Is this real??? Will Archos be successful? What is the most spectacular feature of the tablet? Any idea?
500GB, 2.5x the screen resolution, 2x the screen size, still very pocketable, ARM Cortex A8 power, OpenGL 3D acceleration, HSDPA, WiFi, accelerator, GPS, Bluetooth, all these things probably for cheaper unlocked on HSDPA than an iphone or any other “smartphone” on the market. It’s just much more Internet and Video centric device that also turns Android into a more PC-like experience.
I’ll pass on this. I’ve never been a fan of Archos devices and even after putting Android in there, I’m still not sold. I’m still curious to see what the CrunchPad will offer and what Apple has up their sleeves. http://ziggytek.com/
Is real?
Thats great.. will this initiave will boom? Will this app fit Android make it best?
they should be doing this with bigger screens.
Archos has a history of releasing 7″ models, they also do 10″ and 8.9″ devices. My guess is that this AppsLib initiative is to use Android on any higher resolution device, be it from 4″ tablets to 15″ laptop form factors. I speculate about all the different form factors that Archos may release in this thread: http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=23496
5-inch is too small. Needs to be around 8-10 inches with a 1024 wide resolution to be any use. Otherwise no great benefit over a phone.
5-inch is 2x larger than iphone/htc/palm screens. In fact, I have used the Archos 5 4.8″ Internet Media Tablet for about a year now, and I believe the 4.8″ touchscreen provides a much better web browsing experience, because you can display full width of websites on the also 2.5x larger resolution. if you take bigger than 4.8″ it doesn’t fit a pocket anymore. 4.8″ is the limit.
..and when we’ll get to bendable OLEDs it would be a good idea to get to the Letter format as it is commonly familiar to people :)
I also own a 605wifi and I am very pleaseed with the product. Ok it doesnt’ have the great design of an ipod but for video playback it’s so much better and plays different video formats.
The issue is the customer service which is really appaling. The other thing as well is the the Internet multimedia is totally down these days. Can’t access Dailymotion, jamendo and other services through it. I think Archos has forgotten their 605WIFI customers even though it is probably their most popular product so far in terms of sales.
Archos, wake up! Don’t let us down.
Make sure you load the normal Dailymotion, not HD versions by default. login to dailymotion and choose normal streaming bitrate and resolution for your default. Also you can clear temporary files and cache on your Archos once a month or so of heavy use, and that respeeds things up.
Looking forward to this! I DO like archos a lot and I tried lots of MP3 players the last years but nothing was ever that satisfying as my old archos.
btw, does anyone know about a simple (no video stuff needed) MP3 player, min. 80GB disk, compact design and not connected to some sort of software (like zune, itunes, etc.)??? Thanks
A desktop PC? No, that has video….oh? You want it smaller?
Can crunchgear haz editors?
No.
No thanks ARCHOS, I’d rather not have a tablet then sign up for some more of your horrible tech support crappy hardware.
It’s a shame it’s Archos. The Archos hardware I’ve owned has a 2.5 month MTBF.
I also agree about the “customer support” – Archos has none.
Screw me once Archos, shame on you.
Screw me twice Archos, shame on me.
There will never be a third time.
Archos is garbage. No one will buy this either.
Take a deep breath Mr. Ha and get over it.
They should have waited for Chrome OS..
Chrome OS is I think basically the same as Android just for larger screens. Thus Archos is basically doing Chrome OS before Google actually announces something totally compatible. it would make no sense if Android applications couldn’t be made to work on Chrome OS and it would make no sense for a full Chrome browser not to work on powerful enough Android devices eventually.
i really like this but only if the screen was a little bigger
Damn…
I am only the second to point this out: 800×480 screen that plays 720p content natively? 720p = 1280×720. That means any 720p content would be scaled down. They aren’t even the same aspect ratio. 800×480 = 5×3. 1280×720 = 16×9.
I suppose the HDMI could output a real 720p picture, but the tablet screen could not display it.
Yes, just plug to your HDTV using HDMI, and the Android applications will be displayed in 720p resolution right there. Consider the awesome Chrome Browser on Android runing at 720p with an unlimited amount of cleverly managed tabs, full AJAX and Flash support.
I really don’t know very much about Android but I am a HUGE fan of ARCHOS!!
I was originally introduced to the company about 4-5 years ago when I was looking for a new MP3 player and my best friend did everything in his power to stray me from the trendy explosion of the iPod. haha. We found a guy selling a barely used ARCHOS GMINI 400! And I snatched it right up fell in love with it and used it daily for years. the only reason I don’t anymore is due to the battery not holding a charge anymore. Other than that it’s in perfect working order.
ARCHOS is by far the best.
I think Archos can replace your battery in your Gmini400 for a little fee. With a new battery it will work as new!
Does it run Mac OS X as a hackintosh? That would rock!
You can install hackintosh on X86 based products.
