After Polaroid went belly-up, The Impossible Project decided they were going to keep the fire by buying up the manufacturing facilities and continuing to make film (and possibly cameras). Admirable!

But until their labors bear fruit… you’ll have to go to Urban Outfitters.

700 limited-edition Polaroid ONE600 cameras will be sold at UO stores across the country, along with the Type 799 instant film we all know and love. These aren’t impostors or remakes, these are the last cameras and film stock to roll out of Polaroid’s factories. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to stand outside in the rain if I have to in order to get one.

  • Damn. I’m going to have to do the same.

  • They should totally resurrect the SX-70 instantfilm SLR… I’ve been itching for one of those.

  • Polaroids died a long time ago.

  • This is tragic. I used to spend a cool hundred a month on their film (not chicken feed, when you’re a part-time barista for a living) and took at least one shot a day. I still have those pictures and there is nothing, including Photoshop, that can give me the same colours.

To sell it to the douches at Urban Outfitters is just throwing pearls before swine. They’ll all take pictures of their syphillitic, soon to be forgotten lovemates and tattoos. What a waste.

  • I don’t get why it had to be Urban Outfitters. I want one for posterity but I don’t want to buy anything there.

  • Will it be sold only in London? What about other branches of UO (Birmingham)?

  • I don’t like Urban Outfitters either but I’m just happy that they’re getting out there for people to buy rather than ending up in a landfill.

Who really cares where they are being sold as long as they are being sold. And actually, this is a smart move. Putting them in camera shops or more “serious” stores is useless. Professional photographers already know about Polaroid and either don’t care or already use it. This opens it to a new audience.

Photographers who want Polaroid saved can’t be snobby that hipsters might enjoy it too.

  • Great…Urban Outiftters. And how much will it sell for? $200? Like their plastic cameras that they sell for $200 (when you can get a REAL vintage, all-metal Twin Lens Reflex camera on eBay for like $50).

  • they were 180.

  • So, the NYC and San Fran stores sold out of them in minutes. So much for the commenters who said Polaroid is dead and that they shouldn’t have been sold there. Shocking that the the owners of the companies know more than you do about how to sell and market their products!

  • $180? Wow…so I was close. That’s interesting, when you can get a Polaroid 600 camera from any thrift shop for like $5 or $10, and there are still places that have Polaroid film left for $20. (A camera shop near me still has a ton of Polaroid film.) For a grand total of maybe $30 or $40, you could get pretty much the exact same thing that Urban Outfitters is selling here for $180.

My guess is that the only reason people are buying this is that they truly think that Urban Outiftters is the only place left where you can find a Polaroid camera and film. But hey, this is the same place that sells boxes of film with a sticker that says “Anolog Love”…and then charges tripple the price that you can get film anywhere else.

  • fantastic, long life to polaroid!
