MMO players, the Razer Naga mouse may interest you

naga

MMO players have another mouse from which to choose, this time from Razer. It’s called the Naga, and it’s designed to “enhance your ability to control your character.” No harm in that.

The basic premise behind the mouse is to offload as many of the non-movement related keystrokes to the mouse itself. That leaves you to WASD to your heart’s content with your left hand, while not as frequently taking your right hand off the mouse (and keyboard for that matter).

Razer has an “introductory” video that reminds me of so many RF Video shoot interviews. Yes, we’re getting more and more obscure here at CG. (Razer has several other videos that take you all the way from downloading the software from its Web site to assigning buttons in the game.

Razer also has a new mousepad, the Megasoma, for which the company wants $50. Now, I may be old fashioned, but I’ve never used a mousepad that costs anything more than, um, anything. Come to think of it, every mouse pad I’ve always used either came with the computer, or I picked up in a trade show junk pile.

Again, I just hope the build quality of this MMO mouse is a little better than that WoW mouse I used.

  • He’s clearly reading from a prompter. I keep seeing this all over the gaming industry and it annoys me. You cannot convince me you are actually passionate about your product when you’re reading from a prompter.

    • Oh, and that looks like way too many buttons, too close together to manage with my thumb.

      • I’m going to have to agree with you there… having TWELVE buttons on the side seems excessive and hard to manage. I wouldn’t mind a row of four or five buttons (my current mouse has the two) for various things, but I can’t imagine trying to hit the right button at the right time, especially since hitting the WRONG button might do something very counterproductive to whatever you’re doing.

    • Very true, I was wondering why we was looking off to the side then I realized the white glare on his glasses reminiscent of a prompter. Maybe he just played too much WOW to actually memorize his script.

    • It drives me insane when companies spout BS like that – talking about how they wanted to be able to tend to EVERY GAMER’S NEEDS etc – no mention of left handers tho, aye?

  • I’m iffy on how people would be able to properly use the 12 buttons on the side. A person with a relatively tiny thumb, I imagine, would have a tough time reaching all the different 12 buttons accurately whereas a person with a thick thumb would just mash multiple buttons at the same time…

Personally, this would go better with my rig than the Steel Series version plus it’s cheaper too!

  • I have a 4-button mouse that I’ve mapped as many functions to as I can (shift/ctrl modifiers) and I’ve often wanted more buttons on my mouse. If I could just use my left hand for forward/strafe/back (never turn), and maybe 4-5 primary/spam attacks, that would be ideal. I could have my ‘reaction’ buttons – like cloak or vanish on the mouse (which I do now) as well as cd-based functions that I don’t have to either click (god forbid) or take my hand away from wasd or my mouse to hit.

IF this mouse works ergonomically, IT WILL ROCK.

You can put small stickers (provided) on, say, the corner buttons for tactile reference points so you can easily hit all of the buttons quickly without looking at it.

  • I tried this mouse at Blizzcon and was very impressed as to how it functioned within the World of Warcraft environment. I am no salesman or affiliate of Razer. I just liked the mouse and had a chance to actually use it on my character. The function buttons took a second to get used to, but they worked well. The mouse itself felt very comfortable in my hand (I liked that part even more). It was a little heavy for my tastes, but I was to stocked to let that bother me. I’m waiting for it to be available and I’ll probably get one.
