Know what’s popular nowadays? Netbooks! Nokia is officially jumping on the netbook bullet train with the “Booklet 3G” — an Intel/Microsoft-based netbook that promises 12-hour battery life, a weight of 2.75 pounds, and apparently built-in GPS. The “3G” portion of the name indicates a wireless data connection as well.

Actual specs and details will be announced by Nokia on September 2nd, but it’s believed that the Booklet 3G will run Windows 7. The 12-hour battery life is interesting, too, as that’s a full four hours longer than most netbooks currently on the market. It’ll be interesting to see which Atom CPU is used in the machine to obtain that kind of longevity. It may be a slower but less power-hungry Z-series CPU since the 10-inch Booklet will have a higher-resolution screen (likely 1280×800 or 1366×768).

Again, not a whole lot of details yet aside from some teaser photos. We’ll find out more next week.
UPDATE: Here’s a video, too. This thing’s looking pretty nice so far:

Eh, I’m only even looking forward to this news is because Nokia is involved. Otherwise, I’d completely disregard another netbook release. I barely use the HP Mini 100 I have because it’s so slow. I only use it now for Netflix streaming. My iPhone’s internet browser is faster than the Mini. So not a big fan of netbooks http://ziggytek.com/
I don’t get it – why would a market leader in one department look to dilute its brand name by spreading its offerings across too wide a platform?
This is a license to print money for Nokia. Get someone else to develop netbook, slap your sticker on it and sell it through carrier contracts.
For example on Vodafone in Australia they are selling the Dell Netbooks for $60 a month with a 24 month contract. That’s $1440 … for a netbook worth about $500-$600 retail.
Knock Nokia all you want but they’re not stupid.
The netbook is only $20 mth Kimble, thats $480.
The other $39 mth is for 5GB of data.
Thats a bargan if you ask me.
Pays to get the facts right before opening ones mouth
Swivel screen would be the only virtue a notebook lacking over a tablet.
And maybe genuine accessory of a USB dvd player for netbook.
Windows inside…Garbage in Garbage out !
some what big news, now if Nokia used google’s chrome operating system now that would be news and a good product.
How about if they used their own Linux OS Maemo!
Could be interesting, as Windows 7 has been pretty excellent for me so far. Still, I’m not sold on the whole subsidized netbook model for the average consumer, they have no need for a $60 monthly data plan (with a 5 GB cap) on top of their home Internet connection, cell phone bill, and potentially another data plan for their smartphone.
Well one thing is for sure, our internet connectivity is nowadays what phone connectivity was 5 years back… everyone had a home phone line and mobile line… Now we have internet connection at home and when mobile, but only the mobile phone line…
Atleast thats how it is in Sweden :)
I am not able to update my status in Chrome developer version. However it is updating on IE. you guys having the same problem?
The interesting thing here will be the business model they choose
nokia could sell this through carrier subsidies and thereby give the world a practically free computer at the point of purchase
that’s the way nokia works and thinks, and why this is interesting
I am not able to update my facebook status in Chrome developer version. However it is updating on IE. you guys having the same problem?
Hmm. As you say, nice so far. But all we’ve seen is the stuff from the marketing department.
I have a sinking feeling that once people start to get their hands on them, they’ll be found out to be style over content.
Nokia are olympic champions at that, in my opinion.
All About Symbian are reporting that it runs on the Intel Atom Z530 running at 1.6 Ghz.
why don’t they develop a good phone, it’s been ten years now?
Online research shows that netbooks are getting a disproportionate amount of attention. They actually do not have very high customer service ratings:

Nokia ought to stick with improving their phones.
What, it doesn’t run Aero? Boo.
And I’m still waiting on the price. The fact they haven’t announced it yet means it’s gonna cost a lot for a “netbook”
12 hour battery? BS.
Probably 12 hours if you have MS word open with a black background and the screen dimmed black and you’re typing <30 wpm.
As soon as you sneaze, the battery life goes down by 4 hours.
Sexy, I want one!
Wow. Would love to own one.
