In the Old West a man was defined by his hat. Stetson, Ten-Gallon, and Bowler were only three of the myriad hats available to a real man and these hats often stank of pomade and sweat and were frequently infested with lice and caked in a fine crust of dandruff. The Old West totally sucked.

Thank God we live in the New West because now, for $14, you can wear a WiFi detecting cap that shows current WiFi levels in your general vicinity. It comes in two styles – circular and, apparently, Engadget- and comes in black, red, or white.

As Brando notes:

Are you always seeking a WiFi signal in the public area? Here comes the 802.11 WiFi Detection Cap! It can detect any Wifi 802.11 b/g/n signal, convenient enough!

Convenient enough, indeed, Brando. Sadly, unlike in the Old West, no one today will gun you down for wearing Satan’s own darkly enchanted chapeau on your pate although if you buy this you certainly deserve a good pistol-whipping

  • These like the shirts are functional, but boring.

Why are they always labeled something like “Wifi Detection”….

where are the one’s with names like “Arousal Meter”, and “Caffeine Level”?

C’mon guys… the tech cool, but if you’re not laughing too, then they’re just laughing at you…. :)

    • Dear sir,
I wanted to ask you if you would try this

      http://www.internetuse.tk

& promote this open source wifi and internet use survey.

      SEE: http://www.internetuse.tk

I notice that you are often commenting about opening wifi access and security issues. This survey is designed to explore how people are thinking about this issue, it’s an URTAK survey which means that anyone can see the results and any once can ask questions of their own. Unlike other polling it’s very democratic & open minded. I.e it’s not designed for selfish reasons but to educate anyone who takes part.

The tricky thing is that we need statistically relevant numbers, at least a couple of hundred to make data viable, so maybe anyone seeing this can try it out & help promote it?

      Please HELP. Thanks

  • pretty useless, if you can’t see the signal strength yourself. also I’m not sure, whether nobody would gun you down for wearing such a thing.

  • I think it’s awesome _because_ it’s pointless.

  • Exactly… only useful if you’re not wearing it! BTW, my Android phone and my macbook can both tell me if there is wifi nearby. Why do I want this goofy hat?

  • If you have kids you can get one of them to wear it, they’ll never know! Or you can look in storefront windows to see your reflection. :)
