The PS3 Slim literally took the world by storm last week, shaking the Heavens themselves in the process. But this new development warrants our attention: is the PS3 Slim slower than the PS3 Fat (or is that Phat? Help me, Internet.)? A bunch of videos posted to YouTube certainly seem to indicate as such.
This one is the most egregious, showing how long it takes a Slim and Fat to boot a DVD:
And yet at the same time, here’s a video of Batman: Arkham Asylum, booting a hair faster in the Slim than in the Fat:
Why is this? Well, no one knows for sure, but reasons being bandied about include: new, slower motherboard used in the Slim; firmware wonkiness; and plain ol’ witchcraft.
Conclusion: this is not, as they say, a “deal breaker.” Enjoy your Slim like there’s no tomorrow!

Batman installs differing amounts of data on your PS3 depending on hard drive space, which in turn affects how quickly it boots up and plays. Maybe the other games are similar?
Different PS3s use different brand and types of hard drives too – that would also affect speed.
Interesting, not a big deal to me but its interesting to see there is a tad bit difference in loading. Perhaps this is a shot in the dark but do you think that; and believe me this is hypothetical. That my (FAT) 60GB PS3 which now sports a 250GB 5400RPM HDD might load slower because the new cooler 120GB slim model can afford to run a 7200RPM HDD. Perhaps with the now cooler running PS3 Sony was able to install a faster seeking hdd. Just a thought dont shoot me im just a messenger.
Batman takes longer to load on “Fat” because it loads the Playstation logo that the “Slim” seems to skip. Even so, the “Fat” appears to make up some of that time, so I’d say it’s still faster.
The HDD used in all “Phat” PS3’s, from what I’ve seen, are Seagate Momentus 5400rpm SATAII drives. You can very easily install a 7200rpm drive in to the “Phat” PS3. I’ve done such and noticed a bit of a speed improvement over HDD based files on my PS3 (originally a 60GB unit). The only thing that won’t effect the speed, is the difference between a SSD and a traditional magnetic drive as the PS3 isn’t able to utilize the speeds provided by an SSD. And I was under the impression that the “PS3 Slim” used the exact same firmware as the “PS3 Phat”, but I could be wrong…
I think they are the same speed becuase ps3 slim skips the logo but the ps3 fat loads the dashboard faster so they are both the same.
